Review for /osprey farpoint 55 travel backpack

Price was 174. I love this backpack. I spent hours searching for a versatile bag that could possibly be used as a carry on, or be durable enough to be used as a checked bag. . Pros:. . - this entire bag is actually two backpacks. The main bag has hidden shoulder straps that are tucked and zipped away when needed, and the smaller backpack attaches to the front via another zipper. When they are attached you would never know these are two backpacks in one. . - when detached, the main bag is small enough to be considered a carryon. I recently traveled and used the smaller backpack as my personal item, and the main bag as my carryon. Everything went smoothly and it fit perfectly in the overhead compartment (this was flying southwest). . - i've had duffels partially open and rip when i've sent them through as a checked bag. This one had no issues! the main bags optional backpack straps tuck away and get zipped up perfectly, and the extra security buckles across the front held everything else in just fine. No rips or tears, and no socks and underwear spilling down the baggage claim (true story). . - perfect for traveling in the city or a longer trip. When both sections of this bag are packed to the absolute brim, of course it's going to be a bit bulky. But, they still fit together and still were able to be carried on my back without any pain or awkwardness. There is a waist strap that wraps around you as well as a smaller buckle across your chest to really secure it all in there. At the top (by your shoulders) you also are given the option to tighten or loosen the overall fit of the back on your back (more or less how tight it is to your body). . - i was traveling from colorado to new york via plane, then from there to philly via bus, back to new york (bus), and finally home to colorado. The versatility of this backpack made my travels so much easier. I felt bad for my friend's and their bulky luggage who struggled to run around the city, climb stairs, or jump in taxi's as nimbly as i could. . - it has two handles that can be used when it's not in backpack-mode. One on the side, and one on the top. Both are cushioned and in great locations for lugging it in and out of overhead bins and trunks. . - seriously. Buy this bag. Like, stop what you are doing, click "add to cart" and buy it. Yeah, it's a bit expensive (to me, at least), but i wont be needing a new one for a lonnnnnnnnnnng time. And when i do, i'm sure osprey will have another fantastic option for me to choose from. . - the main compartment unzips like a suitcase (around the side) rather than straight down the middle (like a duffel) or from the top (like a backpack). This is perfect for travel because i don't need to dig around to reach things i need. . - i'd feel perfectly confident using this as a backpacking bag as well. . - oh, and it's a colorado brand :) i was basically a walking billboard for colorado between this and my chacos. . Cons:. . - when the smaller backpack is completely stuffed, my polar brand water bottle did not fit in the water bottle holders. I was disappointed, but my water bottles are all pretty massive. I have yet to try, but i think a normal sized plastic water bottle should be fine. I plan to get a carabiner and clip my water bottle onto the many strapys and doodads that are available on the bag. . - i'm not sure why, but i thought there was a zipper pocket on the waist strap of the main backpack. I was disappointed to find out i was wrong, but the little backpack has a nice front zipper and an internal pocket friend that is easily accessible. This was convenient for things like ids and boarding passes as the zipper is pretty hidden (so i don't have to worry about people getting into my bag when im not looking). . Overall:. I'm in love with this bag. Please buy it. Seriously, if you're disappointed i'll take full responsibility (but i promise you wont be).

The more i use the more i love it. So convenient. Im using it with packing cubes. . With one more hand bag (a northface surge 32) with this farpoint 40 we can pack for our whole family (a family of three) for a week. That we did for thailand last december. Thats including my toddler s on-the-go food and even his food processor in it. Anyway with good packing strategies this bag could be your savior. . However, heavy i pack, once the bag is on my back i dont feel the weight as it would in other bags. Thanks to the ergonomic design of straps all around. . Nothing i could add for it was done for a purpose. But wont it be cool if they add some temporary stuff holding pocket on thes sides towards bottom as it is not easy to wear and keep it down frequently for tickets, bottles etc rather than wearing the removable pack to your front. Osprey farpoint 55 travel backpack Review (fba 10000293)

Traveled to australia through jetstar with this bag. Perfect size. Used as carry on and personal item in us and first legs of australian flights. The last jetstar flight out, they weighed my bag and it was overweight so i had to check it (us$140! ). As long as you stay under weight, this bag is great. Plenty of room, comfortable to wear, and great day pack for wondering the country during the day. -P. Emily

Osprey Farpoint 55 Travel Backpack Sports

  • Brilliant combination of rugged build quality and refined looks. It works for camping - i took it on a 5 day backpacking trip in the ozarks, and it was quite functional for that. The suspension system is actually quite impressive for a pack mostly made for air travel. If you're looking for a camping pack, find something with a bit more options for attachment points. But for the city, and travel in general, nothing beats it. . The red's not a bad color choice either - stands out in the wilderness (or at the airport luggage carousel), but not too bright or obnoxious in the city.
  • I used this for my 3 week trip to se asia and absolutely loved it. I would not recommend anything else besides osprey. I'm 5'10 and have the small/medium sized pack which works with my physique perfectly. I had no issue with carrying around both the larger pack and day pack while both were full. I usually left the larger pack at the hotel when traveling about each city and carried around the day pack which is perfect if you want to carry things with you during the day. This certainly was worth the price and i expect to use this not only for longer more distant trips but for my domestic trips as well. Perfect pack for an avid traveler and for a person going on vacation.
  • I love this backpack and it would've gotten 5 stars except for very poor quality control. Most of the zippers work fine. However, after i detached the daypack from the larger backpack for the first time, it was impossible to reattach. After multiple hours of messing with the zipper and trying to get it to connect, i ended up taking a razor blade to the edge of the daypack zipper, which is when i discovered excess fabric and glue which prevented the male side of the zipper from seating correctly. I removed all the excess material and can finally connect the daypack to the backpack again, but this specific unit shouldn't have made it out of the factory without someone catching this.
  • The backpack at first was really nice as in the picture , when i carried it for the first time it seems to be great, after one week of using it in a backpack trip to europe wth 7kg it broke from the button , so it was expensive for one week that was useful .
  • Disappointed a little. Bought this backpack for a costa rica adventure and it is already coming apart.

farpoint travel Osprey Farpoint 55 Travel Backpack (Switch to Mobile/Desktop Version)

Bought this and a kelty redwing 50 and the redwing's hip belt & lower back support is so much more comfortable. Also that is easier to use as carry-on, can't see how this m/l version can be used as it is 4" longer than most airlines limit (26" vs 22" length). . With these issues, i still kept this one as the quality on this backpack is so much better, especially the sturdy top/side handles, plus i love the hideaway straps. I anticipate using this as a duffle bag often so both features will make it very convenient.

Osprey Farpoint 55 Travel Backpack
Click to see NoticeOsprey Farpoint 55 Travel Backpack (fba 10000293)"Loved it. And i agree with some other reviewers in that there was very little noticeable difference in the packing capacity between this and the 70. The daypack was great, too, and i liked it a lot better than the daylite plus. The padded handle on the side feels great, which sounds weird saying that about a handle, but these are parts that designers rarely put much thought or care into. If you might be carrying a heavy pack by it's handle for some distance for some reason, this could mean the difference in comfort or your hand aching or going numb. . Ultimately for this (and the 70), i felt i needed (wanted) more space for extended european travel. This isn't because you can't pack for 2 or 3 months journey in this bag-you can-but i also want space to bring things back, so i've opted for the 80 and returned the 55 and 70 that i purchased to compare. But this is a great bag, and i like the aesthetic design of it better than the 80-to me it just looks better, but when comparing the two and deciding which to keep, aesthetics couldn't play a role in bags that are so different in their capacity and function. . The daypack had a good laptop sleeve, which was padded, nicely textured, soft, and could hold my 15 in (plus) laptop with no issue. . I definitely recommend this bag, possibly with packing cubes or similar devices to hold your clothing in place on extended journeys."

(0) Question: Is the daypack comfortable for full day hiking? i will be hiking every day but large pack will be transported. will day pack be good enough?

(1) Question: What is the difference between the m/l and the m/l (55 liter)? when choosing the sizing gives the 2 option and the price changes why?

(2) Question: Is the 55l capacity with or without the daypack?

Master Lock Combination Accepted 4688d (Hardware) FAQ.

I have several of these travel locks. I prefer the cable to the solid bar. Easy to set the combination. Just make sure the tumblers are locked in. Makes tsa happy -Notice from S. Jackson, Ontario

Product: these locks work excellently. It allows you to click the "male end" of the cable into the receiving slot without changing the combination to a "locked" position, which is convenient at times but one must be careful to remember to lock this. The cable lock is an awesome improvement over the traditional full-metal locks as it gives a new level of flexibility and versatility. . Price:i saw a similar product in a retail store for double this price but was tickled to find this product available on prime. So, for the price i would have paid at the store for two locks i was able to get three of these, delivered two days later, and save 25%. Now that feels like winning.

Master-lock-combination-accepted-4688d-(hardware) set picture

- P. MeyerThe 5 locks work perfectly. It was very easy to set my own combination. I was very surprised though, to see all the colors that i received. I thought i ordered 5 blue lock and i got all the colors but blue. So i check my order on online store to see what i did. The picture showed blue, but the discription said assorted colors. My mistake. Not worth returning. Just double check the discription of the items before placing your order. Attention to details.

We already had one that we liked so we got another one that was damaged by an airline. The flexible cable stands up better to the abuse during travel.

The F.A.Q. for Osprey Farpoint 55 Travel Backpack (fba 10000293)

Settling the overhead bin debate. . If you are like i was before purchasing this bag, you weren't sure how to settle the debate in these reviews about whether the bag fits in the overhead bin on an airline. Most reviews say that it will fit, but some say that it won't. To complicate matters, the bag comes in two sizes, and the s/m is one inch shorter than the m/l. Does the s/m fit and the m/l not fit? . . I own the larger size, labeled "m/l. ". . I can say definitively that the m/l size does fit in the overhead bins on both southwest and alaska. It fits perfectly, with no need to mash or mangle it. The attached picture is from an alaska airlines flight. My bag is the one on the far left. To be clear, i removed the front day pack before placing the bag into the bin. I think that you would need to if your bag is full. You could get away with having it attached if not. . Your mileage may vary with other airlines.

The farpoint 55 was perfect for my 2 week backpacking adventure through itaky. Initially i thought it would be too small but was perfect. I was able to travel on trains and toss it in the overhead compartments and the zip away backpack was great for day trips through each city. . What i loved about the farpoint 55 is that you can zip up the straps to make it easier to check-in on a plane. Also the front zip helped tremendously when trying to find stuff. . I will be using this bag for all my hiking and travel trips.

Best osprey farpoint 55 travel backpack (fba 10000293) in review

The minute i saw this backpack i knew i had to get it! a 16 night holiday to peru with a friend. On a hop on hop off bus with different hotels almost nightly. There was no way i was lugging my suitcases, even though i usually travel with carry on size. Just made more sense to backpack and so the search was on for the perfect backpack. Seeing as i drag along too many electronics (ipad, iphone, camera, chargers) my main goal was to find a pack with a detachable day bag (i often check out rick steve's blogs and love the idea of a day bag) and so when i came across the osprey farpoint 55, well, i knew my quest was over! i already know how to pack a carry on size bag for extended trips (3 weeks in south africa using a carry on) so the size was a no brainer. S/m so i can use it for carry on. Interestingly enough i am almost sure that it will fit under the seat in front of me. I did a test run with what i plan to pack in the main part and it is no bigger than the rolling carryon duffel that i have often stashed under the seat. Makes for a great foot rest! however, seeing as only clothes will be in there, i do plan to pop it in the overhead and do not anticipate any problems. Lots of talk about no internal pockets inside the main pack. Seeing as i plan to use packing cubes this is not a concern for me. There is one mesh pocket on the inside top cover that will be handy to keep some stuff separated from the rest. The inside of the main bag is roomier than what you figure at first glance. Once you start putting items inside you realize that if you have stuffed this backpack full to the brim, you are taking way too much stuff! . The day pack is larger than i expected and will work nicely as a day/overnight pack on some of the overnight excursions in peru while we leave the main pack back at the hostel. A quick change of clothes, electronics, water bottle, and room for a souvenir. The harness is comfortable and the pack looks great on. All in all, of all the backpacks i researched, this was the one that fit the bill! . . Update:. Back from peru and i love this backpack! i did use the packing cubes, which kept everything in order which was really handy as we moved daily to a new hostel so it was a no brainer to take the cubes out for underthings, pants, tops, whatever. Without having to make a huge mess since all clothes were rolled, everything was visible. Surprisingly i only used the larger pack as a suitcase, never putting it on my back. Instead i put the day pack on my back and carried the larger pack. My travel partner however used hers as a backpack and was very pleased with it. If i had to find fault with this system i would have to say that more outside pockets would have been great to keep things organized and within easy reach, however i did get a purse organizer which fit nicely into the bottom of my day pack and that really helped. Overall very pleased and cannot wait to go on my next adventure!

Best backpack for traveling. The biggest you can get for a carry on. Trust me i did a ton of research. Zip off day pack and it will even fit ryan air limitations. Use space cubes.

I bought this because i wanted something bigger for my travels for work. I wanted to start carrying tennis shoes as well as clothes and i have to bring a cpap, as well as laptop. While overall this works well, it's almost too big. I think it would be great for longer trips. When only traveling for 1-3 days, so far, it seems like overkill. I'm considering getting the farpoint 40 for that reason. Having said that, there are some definite pros to this bag and i'll continue to use and experiment for now. . I love the fact that the day pack can be unzipped from the main pack. This is the main reason i bought this over the 40. Also, with the 40, it is taller (deeper? ) than the 55. While the 55 is technically longer than a carryon, i was able to put it in an overhead on two regional planes whereas every roller bag had to be checked. I wonder if a farpoint 40 would have ended up being checked as well because of its dimensions? . . Anyway, i will definitely use on vacations because it is of a size that makes it great for a weeklong trips. Also, on a full sized aircraft, i can't imagine having a problem with overhead storage. Overall a great back. I wish they made this design in a 40 liter.

W. Marguerite, City of Kingston upon Hull says

Awesome bag system for international travel. Works great in all of its configurations. Yes, it's about 1" taller than some airline guidelines but we were able to make it fit in all bag sizers for united, aer lingus, and eurowongs without issue.

So i like many others spent a long time looking over which type of pack to take on a month-long trip to thailand. After spending several weeks looking i decided on this pack. It held up perfectly, zipper even when completely full and under a lot of tension still zipped up and did not come apart. The two packs separate seamlessly but come together very well though i will say it does stick out rather far. I really enjoyed being able to put everything away so no straps were hanging out when i checked my baggage. I have several osprey packs i use for when i am camping in this packs quality is in the same league. The pack when the two pieces were apart allowed it to be used as carry-on for american airlines.

I got this backpack for our trip to europe and it was awesome. I was able to use it as a carry on and keep the zip on book bag as a second personal item. I didn't have any problems flying in the united states, ireland, or paris. I definitely recommend getting packing cubes to go inside. I was able to fit enough clothes for 17 days, 2 pairs of shoes, and my slimmed down toiletries. Now in the states when i travel this is my go-to bag. I usually just use the main bag and leave the small book bag home. It's been such a great purchase!

. Connie, Wolverhampton

I used this bag on a recent european trip. The bag is overall excellent. The day pack is great and there's a lot of room in the main compartment. However, i tend to over pack and in doing so it makes it difficult to attach the day pack to the main pack via the zippers. I imagine the next time i use this i will pack smarter and that won't be an issue. During transport, either with the day pack zipped to the back or clipped to the front in an alternate connection, both hands are available which is nice and all connections are made easily. I felt that the alternate connection of the day pack to the shoulder straps wasn't as practical as i'd hoped for. This allows you to wear the day pack on your belly side. It's comfortable but i didn't like anything in front of me. Not a problem. Just use it as it comes normally. But, in its normal configuration the bag can't be carried on (the main bag alone does fit in most airline carry on compartments). It requires you to separate the two bags. If that would bother you i'd advise you to seek another model bag. The main compartment is just that. Nothing fancy and no hidden pockets for storage, just one zipper on the top inside part. The day bag has two internal storage sleeves but nothing else. Don't let that fool you, i could fit a lot in the day pack. Still, i would have liked some more compartments in both sections. Everything was extremely durable too. Nothing wrong there. The last thing that stood out was hiding the shoulder straps for storage of the back in transit to avoid the straps from potential damage. It took less than a minute to do/undo and was pretty easy but if you're in a rush it's kind of a pain. Nice feature though and one that i used on every flight or bus ride. I'd recommend this bag to anyone but a friend had the osprey porter 46 and it looked like a simpler, more practical bag with plenty of space, plenty of compartments, was one unit, and had easy access to pertinent documents as well as quick storage of shoulder straps. My friend looked like he had less trouble during transit than i did considering i had two bags to deal with (if the day pack was worn on the front) rather than his one.

Y. Yvette, North Tyneside says

I used this backpack for 50 days while backpacking europe; packing and unpacking it daily, zipping and unzipping, adjusting, and taking off/putting on multiple times per day and it held up beyond expectation. Never an issue with a zipper or seam! . The day pack, however, made the bag rather bulky and difficult to travel on metros/in crowded areas with. I loved having it, but next time i think i'd rather have a regular large backpack and carry a small collapsible backpack inside for when i need a day pack. Overall, however, from a quality standpoint i would definitely recommend it.

F. Watson, City of Bristol

I can't praise this backpack enough. My wife and i purchased 2 of them for our 3 week trip to europe in 2014, and absolutely loved them. We actually ordered the farpoint 40, but were shipped the farpoint 55. We decided to keep the packs instead of exchanging them, and i'm glad we kept them. Technically, the main pack doesn't meet the maximum size requirements for most airlines. In practice though, the pack fits every overhead bin that i've tested it in, and it looks 'squishy' enough that the airline staff have never challenged me on it. I've taken it succesfully as a carryon on american airlines, united airlines, hawaiian airlines, and alaska airlines. Our 2014 trip was 4 weeks long total, and these two packs were all the luggage that we took. The main packs were large enough for our luggage, and the detachable daypacks were the perfect size for everything we needed to keep with us each day (camera, jacket, passports, wallet, etc). . I was initially surprised at how lightweight the nylon fabric feels, but they have held up amazingly well. The fabric doesn't scuff or show marks, and it isn't snag-prone. It's certainly not waterproof, but we found it to be water-resistant enough to handle a light rain shower just fine. One of the seams on my wife's daypack shoulder strap did eventually let go, but we contacted osprey and they repaired it for free with no hassle. They definitely stand behind their product! . . I have three small frustrations with the pack-. -the water bottle pockets on the daypack exterior are not nearly large or stretchy enough. They work, but good luck getting a bottle in there if the pack is stuffed full. -the zip-away strap cover panel on the main pack is difficult to stow away when you want to use the main pack should/waist straps. You have to roll it down to the bottom, and then stuff it into a little velcro area. It never fits quite right, and always feels like it might come popping back out. It never has actually popped out, but i wish they would redesign the closer on this. -the frame is just about an inch too large to 'officially' qualify as a carryon. Come on, guys! just shrink the frame by an inch, and everything would be kosher! i called osprey on the phone, and one of their product designers said they're working on a similar concept-hopefully they get this sorted out. We've never had an issue, but why not just shrink the frame a little to be safe? . . Conclusion: buy it, you certainly won't regret it. The quality you will receive is well worth the price tag.

G. Morgan, Nevada says

I'm deciding between the osprey fairpoint and osprey porter. I had tried on a friend's farpoint 40 m/l and it fit me so great. Even with heavy load i was comfortable. So i decided to try a farpoint 55, thinking the frame would be the same, but it's not - in the m/l it's way too big on me. I hope the s/m fits or i will be bummed! . You can fit a ton of stuff in the large compartment (and if you don't use packing cubes you'll love the compression straps. I wish there was a bit more organization on the small day pack. It's pretty much just one pocket. Maybe another stash pocket on the outside?

H. Nancy, Dorset

I've used this pack for two international trips so far (three weeks in scandinavia and a week and a half in germany) along with a handful of domestic travels, and it's been absolutely perfect. My wife and i love to hike when we go abroad, and even with our gear (and using compression packs for our clothes), we're able to fit about a week and a half's worth of stuff in here before having to find laundry. I've lugged this thing around cities for hours at a time, and the waist and chest straps do exactly what they're supposed to (take weight off your back). Very comfortable. I've brought plenty of glass bottles back from overseas and domestically, as well, and have never had anything break. It's right on the upper end of carry on size, but i've never had any airline turn it away when i've brought it on board. Overall, i think this pack is absolutely essential for any international travel. I know it's made my journeys a breeze.

. Delgado, Southwark says

My wife and i each used this backpack on a two week trip to scandanavia and iceland. The backpacks passed the test and are great! . . The best feature of these backpacks is that they're front-loading. I have an older top-loading backpacking pack that i used to use for international travel and it was such a pain to dig through my stuff from the top. With the farpoint 55, you can lay it down like a suitcase and get to your stuff easily and quickly. I wanted a l/xl pack, but went with a s/m and it's surprisingly spacious. I overpacked and in the main pack i was able to fit 8 shirts, four pants, two shorts, a sweater, a pair of shoes and flip flops, one sweatpants, one baseball cap, one beanie, my toiletries, many pairs of socks and underwear, and some small electronics. I used packing cubes to keep things organized. In the small daypack, i fit my dslr in its carrier, along with smaller items like an ipad mini, sunglasses, magazines and a book. . I tended to wear my daypack on my front instead of attaching it to the main pack just to maintain a good weight balance. The daypack stayed on my shoulders well when i wore it in front. When i did attach the daypack to the main pack, i felt really off-balance, but that's probably because i overpacked. I never felt too much pressure on my shoulders when walking with the packs. I just tightened the straps to be really secure on my waist, chest, and shoulders, and the different pressure points helped hold up the weight. My wife and i did a few 20-30 minute walks while wearing the packs and it wasn't bad at all (disclaimer: we are in really good physical condition). . We were able to take these packs as carry-ons on all our flights. We flew virgin america, icelandair, and norwegian air, and the packs fit just fine on all planes. They won't fit in smaller regional planes though, but as long as the plane is an a320 or 737 at the least, you won't have a problem. Not one airline official or flight attendant stopped us to question the size of our packs. . I agree with some of the other reviewers that the exterior pouches on the daypack need a lot of improvement. The "elastic" at the top of the pouches don't hold things in well. My wife wanted better waist straps for support since she also used to use a backpacking pack for traveling, but after tightening all of her straps she didn't have much of a problem. As for quality, so far i haven't noticed any threading coming apart, and the zippers have been fine. . Overall i was really satisfied with the farpoint 55. The price has even gone down about $25 since i bought them a few months ago. I'll be taking it on two more trips this summer and if anything changes, i'll post an update.

M. Stacey, Connecticut says

Amazing bag with very durable construction and easy to clean materials. Made travel through airports much easier since our hands were free for passports, forms, calling agents, and navigating through crowded terminals. Great support with adjustments to ensure good center of gravity. Large sippers are easily locked. This was more than enough space for a 2 week trip to thailand with day clothes, beach clothes, and dress clothes for night, but we also used vacuum bags "12 pack premium travel space saver bags. No vacuum needed" and this helped organize our clothes, keep dirty or wet clothes from ruining our clean clothes, and ensuring that if it rained our stuff wouldn't get wet.

R. Debra, Staffordshire

Exactly what i was looking for - carry on and backpack in one. Update after traveling to haiti with this bag. Its even better than i could have hoped for! the ability to load the main pack like a suitcase and detach the daypack as my personal item made traveling so easy. This bag is great for week+ longer trips. If you are smaller statured, definitely get the s/m size. It fit perfectly in the carryon measurement and was a breeze to carry even off my back.

E. Wimbish, South Carolina says

I bought this for a week-long trip to iceland because it looked like i could carry it on if i zipped off the 15l attached pack. I was able to carry it on without challenge, but on smaller aircraft had to gate check while on larger aircraft (767) had to turn it sideways to fit in the overhead bin. On the way home, with gifts, it was stuffed and heavy so i decided to check it once i got back in the states for the last domestic leg of my itinerary. I flew american airlines domestically to the connecting us international airport, where i picked up icelandair. I m a tall female (68 inches) with a long torso so the men s version is fine for me and with the adjustability it was comfortable and easy to use. The full open zipper (rather than stuffing the thing from the top) made getting to my gear easy without always having to unpack then repack. The zip-off pack was convenient and also easy to get things into and out of without necessarily having to unpack and then repack to get a specific item out. It was a great day pack on the trip. The whole thing is low profile compared to other packs and especially book backpacks. I have the reddish colored version and checking it got it a little dirty, but spot cleaning was easy and it held up (no scratches, picks, or tears). I looked at the smaller version (40l) but i m glad i got the 55l instead with the judiciously selected winter gear i needed and saving a little room for gifts (i squashed an icelandic sweater into it for the way home). I recommend this backpack. It s roomy (all things considered), and allows flexibility.

. Crawford, Redbridge

I love this backpack. I bought it because i was going to be traveling around the uk for two weeks. The dual backpack system was perfect because i was able to leave the large bag in my hotel room and take the day pack while walking around in the day time. Both bags are also super comfortable to wear walking around. As far as putting it overhead on a plane the only flights i had difficulties on were little puddle jumpers in the uk. Just take the daypack off and put it under your seat and the large one in the overhead. If you buy this i also suggest getting some packing cubes. I found that it just makes it easier to keep everything organized,

X. Russell, Alaska says

I love this backpack. I've now taken it on trips to europe and africa, and it has worked perfectly. I plan to take a five-month trip with it next year. I have easily carried this bag on several domestic and international airlines and dozens of flights, and never had a problem. Note, that it is not technically carry-on size. Once the small day pack is removed and the straps stowed, it's barely bigger than the guidelines, and fits fine in overhead bins. . I much prefer using this to taking two separate bags or just one bag. I get 55 litres of volume that i can easily and comfortably carry on my back. I have carried it as much as 18 miles in a day with no problem. But when i get on a plane, i can separate the two bags and put the things i need on the flight in the smaller bag and put the main pack in the overhead bin. . I wish the day pack had a bit more organizing iike a pen loop and small pockets for cables) and that there were a better pocket for a water bottle.

This backpack is awesome! i bought it for my daughter, who was traveling to brazil and going to be traveling to multiple locations, and having to carry her belongings between all the places. Awesome things about this bag:. -it has a detachable smaller backpack that's a day pack. -once the smaller backpack is removed, the main bag opens like a duffel bag, so it's easy to access the contents of the bag without removing everything as you would have to with a traditional hiking type backpack. -the backpack straps/waist strap zip into a compartment which makes it easier to use as a carry on. -my daughter said it was comfortable to carry over a 16 day trip. -she was able to pack everything she needed for a 16 day trip

I purchased this bag to accompany me on a 3 week trip through france in the summer when temperatures can vary from the mid 50's to the low 90's. I am by no means an "overpacker" but i was concerned when this thing showed up at my door. Overall i would absolutely recommend this bag as an alternative to regular rolling luggage. Using the online storebasics 4-piece packing cube set (small, medium, large, and slim) i was able to fit 4 pants, 3 shorts, 6 tanks, 10 shirts, 2 light-medium sweaters, 2 rompers, 3 pairs of shoes, 1 pair of sandals, a good handful of socks/underpants/bathingsuits, and toiletries and still not feel like i was hurting for room. I very much liked having the detachable day pack and used it almost every day throughout my travels. My favorite part of both bags was having the ability to lock the zippers and not worry about anyone fishing through anything while my attention was elsewhere. I am a smaller sized human (5' 0") and using the many snaps and straps, was able to adjust it comfortably to sit on my body without feeling shoulder fatigue. I did not do any long distance travel with it on my back but was able to carry it for an hour or 2 at a time without it being a problem. I believe at its heaviest both bags connected weighed about 20 lbs. It feels verys well built and i can't wait to see how many more miles i can put on it. *the picture attached shows the day pack held in front of me and the backpack alone on my back

A week after my awesome trip to thailand i felt it was my duty to give credit where it is due, and this bag deserves a lot of praise! the detatchable daypack really provided me with a sense of security during my trip, allowing me to have my important documents (in waterproof housing) with me at all times being that i was staying mostly in hostels with little security. Yet the pack was durable and light weight enough that it didn't become a nuisance or something to worry about. I was in thailand during songkran festival, the local new year which has turned into the biggest water fight in the world, spanning 3 days! the material of this pack is slightly water resistant and did defend my clothes from getting wet from small amounts of water thrown on it for a short period during transit. The extreme heat of thailand probably was to thank for that as well though lol. My day pack did end up getting soaked through at one point and quickly dried out for the next days use! i cannot recommend this pack enough for its versatility and durability, alone! . . Another thing i wanted to touch on was the ability to use this pack as a carry on while flying. I have seen a lot of debate about the issue and while i cannot speak for all airlines, the two asian companies i flew with never even gave my pack a 2nd look! i flew with eva air and air asia and the m/l pack fit just fine in each compartment. I did keep the day pack on me as my hand luggage. (see picture). . Hope this helps!

This is 2 backpacks together! in my world travels i use this as my sole bag and it's a carry on. Carry-ons should be limited to 45 inches (total the height, width and depth in inches). This is a 55 incher. So if you're using this as a carry on, get the black and not the red to make it less noticeable. Be prepared for airlines to force you to check this bag in and not allow you to carry it on. The smaller backpack zips right off. What a concept! no problems so far as a carry-on:. . I bought this bag for my 3 week trip in se asia. It worked exactly as i'd hoped! i probably could have chosen the next size smaller, but that was my mistake. The zippers were strong when i had the bag stuffed full. I used the smaller bag for day trips and using it's connections to the bigger pack, when it was on my chest, made balancing the load and walking significantly easier. The mesh bags and small zipper pocket were great for quick to reach items and water. I didn't want the typical back pack that has top/bottom opening. This acts more like a suitcase and was easier to access things anywhere in it when opened. . Fyi i'm 5'3" female - it was pretty heavy fully loaded, but manageable for for walking hours. . Wouldn't change a thing.

My husband and i got this bag for our upcoming trip to europe. I spent a lot of time researching the best bag and making sure i got a bag that fits carry-on requirements. I am thrilled with this bag and i definitely think it was the right choice. I have practice packing this with everything i will need for the trip with plenty of room to spare! i wore the bag around the house for a while to see how it fits and if it is comfortable and i felt no discomfort. The hip belt helped distribute the weight of the pack in a way that i could barely tell i was carrying 20 pounds on my back. . When i practiced packing for our trip i paired this bag with ebags slim packing cubes. I am not a light packer and those 3 babies fit all the clothing i would need for a 17 day trip and the packing cubes barely day 1/4 of the space in the main bag. . If flying budget airlines zip off the day pack as your personal item or stuff it inside the main backpack. I spent a lot of time on this part of my research. While it looks like this bag might be slightly too big for some of the stricter budget airlines in europe every person who has actually tried this bag on their trip has been successful. I will report back after my trip with how it worked for us on our 3 ryanair flights.

I am quite pleased with this pack. There are a few differences between the newest model (the one i purchased on online store), and the one my wife bought at a local outdoors store a couple of months ago. Most changes are minor, but the net effect is a slight upgrade from the previous model. Unfortunately, my wife stole the new bag and made me use the one she purchased. If forced to criticize the pack, we would both say that the date pack is slightly small. That said, when you look into, which is why we bought a second pack. . On a related note, we bought asked for a nine day trip to costa rica. Although we did pack sparingly, with enough room for all of our clothing, etc. , without needing a second bag. We were forced to gate check the bags on a small commuter jet, but so are most of the other passengers. On a regular/full-size jen, we had no problem carrying the bags and placing them in the overhead bin' commuter jet, but so are most of the other passengers. On regular/full-size jets, we had no problem carrying the bags onto the plane or placing them in the overhead bins.

Disadvantage and Critical reviews

U. Jackson, North East Lincolnshire says

Just got back from a 3 week backpacking around europe! i overpacked a little but the pack was very comfortable with 17 kg in it. If you have a short torso i don't really recommend this bag. My pack was always not fitting properly with multiple attempts to adjust the straps. I'm only 5'4"- my friend who is 5'6" had no trouble. I loved the daypack option but i would have loved maybe zippers on the hipbelt for phone storage or ticket storage. I was unable to kangaroo my pack because my strap was ripping even though i never tried it. I am going to file a claim with osprey for repair. Overall not a bad pack but if you are going for 3 weeks i recommend bigger than a 55 liter one because the big pack would only be 40.

A little disappointed that the day pack does not hold a hydration bladder. I checked before buying and it seemed all osprey daypacks are supposed to but i guess i found the one that doesn t. I m well past my return date so i ll keep it but if you think you ll hike with this one, it won t work. It is more of a small laptop bag. The bigger travel pack is awesome though

The bag is nice itself but it is too large. Took it on overseas urban trip and it was a problem using public transportation. It really only became okay after detaching smaller bag, and even then there was one flight that i was made to check it because it wouldn't fit in the bin. . The major disappointment is that the picture is at an angle which makes it look relatively low profile. But with the bag attached and packed, it protrudes very far off your back.

Kind of a pain to zip on and off the travel bag, or to try to clip it to the front without help.

C. Brendon, Illinois says

Suck. The bag i received is only just a small front sub-bag , the main bag doesn't come with it . What a liar.

I think this design is poor. It fits comfortably, which i love, but i wish they had taken a few litres off the big pack and added it too the "day pack", as it stands, the day pack is too small for a day pack, and the big one is too big to check (which is why i got it, so i wouldn't have to check luggage). . I had a hard time packing this, the awkward layout doesn't fit my packing cubes well, and there always seemed to be space i could never fill, and space that was too full. But my aim was to pack myself and two small children completely for a summer abroad (which i did, successfully), so if i'm packing for three you'll certainly be able to pack for one just fine, though with the weight i would just recommend getting the next size down and save yourself the trouble. . I also missed the lack of pockets. I've found i'm rather a pocket loving person :)

Actually, a great pack, but something needs to be clarified. This is not a farpoint 40 with a detachable 15l day pack. It is about three inches taller than the 40, and thus, not a carry on. I got this for my daughter's travels to satisfy various discount airlines and their strict carry on requirements and was disappointed to compare it to my farpoint 40, which is an across the board approved carry on. It is difficult to get accurate information about the size of these bags, so i hope this helps!

Zipper broke first week of my journey

To big for airplane storage bins. I had to return it for a smaller size

Wish the bars inside were removable.

The zipper linking the 2 packs failed after 2 weeks of easy use. The most common failure in a pack or a bag and they used a small, weak zipper. Not sure what all the hubub about osprey is after owning and returning 2 bad packs to them.

G. Elizabeth, Australian Capital Territory says

I am not the biggest fan of this pack. The main reasons are i don't feel like it can fit as much as i would have liked inside it due to the zipper that goes all the way around. I've tried with and with out packing cubes and its just so/so for getting in tons of stuff. When trying to fit in a ton of things i end up zipping the zipper most of the way to the top and trying to jam stuff in anyway. The small backpack on the front is really tiny and after my laptop was inside there was barely room for much else. . The clincher though was that airlines don't like it- even us airlines that are less stringent on their rules. I brought it on a flight and the flight attendant immediately flagged me for it being too big. I ended up being able to talk my way out of it but i was fearful i woudl have no such luck with strict european budget airlines. . Its an extremely well made pack it just didn't meet my particular needs and it wasn't as easy to fill as i woudl have hoped. Osprey makes an incredible pack and i'm a huge fan of the brand overall though

After i had another bag for many years i did my research and got this bag. After about two weeks of traveling it started falling apart. A zipper broke and one of the belts just fell off. I did fix it with a guy that does fixes for bags so it should be fine for traveling again but i was disappointed by that. Also the bag is built in a way that all of the weight is at the end and not close to the back.

F. Weber, North Dakota says

I wanted to love this pack. In fact, i still do. I bear no ill-will whatsoever because i'm a devoted osprey customer and will always be. I'm only 5' tall and about 110 lbs. I brought this to indonesia for a month and i was very surprised at how the weight of the pack did not feel centered at all. I felt like i was going to fall backwards and it caused a lot of pain in my shoulders. And yes, i always use the waist belt and i ordered the smallest size. It just wasn't the bag for me. I'm guessing it's my size, but maybe not. So take my review with a grain of salt. . I contacted osprey and customer service was great! they could not let me exchange the bag since it was used, but they gave me a special discount on a future item (which i took them up on) and sold my used farpoint on ebay. I'm super-happy with my current bag, the osprey sojourn 60l.

You have no idea how much i want to like this bag. I bought the bag as an alternative to a 25l backpack plus suitcase for when i want to travel lighter, but still have a few days of clothes. The larger bag is 40 liters and the daypack is 15 liters - and this mix is a little off, to me. Would love to see 35l (or even maintain 40l) backpack and 20l daypack. Most of my travel is weekends to us/canadian cities that are more-or-less roller bag friendly. I have trips to both europe and asia planned for early 2018 and will re-evaluate. . Daypack: it's perfect - for an overnight - no more. I keep my laptop, a charger, phone charger, little battery pack, noise cancelling headphones, and a book inside - and it's about half full. If i get creative, i can fit a change of clothes and (light) toiletries inside. I did this for an overnight to san francisco a month or so back and it was ok. No extra room once i threw my sweatshirt in. For what it's worth, i use it just about every day for work as it is much more comfortable to wear than my other bag. Depending on what i have going on during the day outside of work, i usually carry two 13" laptops, a book, a notepad, headphones, glasses, and various chargers. Maybe some snacks, too. . Backpack: i've wanted to use it for a few trips, but just haven't. The best example is a couple weeks ago - off to visit friends in new york for a long weekend (fly out friday morning, back monday morning). I ran into the exact same problem as before with the daypack not holding enough (maybe i blame the headphones - they're extra bulky, but a lifesaver on long plane rides). Lots of empty space that didn't compress well with three changes of clothes, an extra pair of shoes, a jacket, and toiletries in the larger bag. I ended up taking my regular suitcase (and added a few seattle beers for my new york friends) and the daypack - and it seemed to be just about right.

B. Wayt, Idaho says

I give this 3 stars because it does hold a good amount and is well made. However, it is much bigger, bulkier and more uncomfortable that it ought to be. It is also several inches bigger than the maximum allowed for carry on by american airlines (and probably others as well). Maybe you'll get lucky, maybe you won't. The design that is supposed to make it more comfortable to wear by allowing air to reach your back also makes it way too stiff and uncomfortable. Add to this its excessive price and i certainly found it a disappointment.

The pack is great! . . My one complaint is with online store. I bought a new backpack. The pack i received was clearly used. It had notebooks and travel gear from a previous owner in one of the pockets. It had quite the life! ecuador, argentina, etc. Used items should not be sold at full cost.
