Review for /levis mens original shrink jeans

Price was 10. The photos shows 2 pair of shrink-to-fit 501's that are 38x34 (i normally wear 36x30 or 36x32). In both photos the bottom pair haven't been treated yet. . For the top pair, i wore them in a tub of hot water for 30 minutes, let them line dry until damp, and then wore them until they were dry (did some housework and walked 2 miles). The length shrank 3". . The second photo shows the waist shrinkage, 1" so far (both top buttons are aligned-notice the difference between the labels) and from past experience the waist will probably shrink another . 5-1" over time. . I don't plan on washing them again for about 6 months, probably longer.

Preface

Levi's are . Levi's. Probably the best denim pants available today, though i have to say they aren't the "old" levi's that i could buy 25 years ago. Of course i'm not what i was 25 years ago either. These pants shipped very quickly and were exactly what i expected. I've washed them to shrink them, and they fit perfectly. If i needed more, i'd not hesitate to buy them again from the same online store source. Levi's Men's 501 Original Shrink-to-fit Jeans Review (00501 0000)

After 2 years, these jeans are not so dark anymore. I bought the length & width 2" longer than i need, which was perfect after a few washes! . . I am disappointed (hense 4 starts) that after 2 years these jeans are wearing out around my phone. The pocket has a small hole and the exterior of the jeans is wearing in the same area. This happens with all my jeans eventually. Maybe i expect too much out of jeans, but i'll be buying these again as i enjoy the heavy weight and dark color for work. -. Yvette

PROS
  • Authentic 501's, fast service, shrink to fit in the same manner and the same sizing they have my whole life. Only 4 stars because of what levi's has become, another greedy, offshore, sellout. Now as far away as egypt ! the denim and dye are not like they used to be, i've been wearing them for sixty years. However, they are just as comfy as they have always been. Based on that alone, i'll keep wearing them 'til i die.
  • I love these jeans. They are nice thick heavy duty good looking jeans that have always lasted me a really long time. That being said, i handle them differently than other jeans. . When i first get them, i take a hot bath with them, and then wear them as they dry. I had always read that this guaranteed the best fit as they shrink to fit you as you wear them, and this method has worked for me. I also don't really wash them. Like ever. I make sure i'm not wearing them as like work jeans though and getting them real dirty so there is never really a need. If they start to get a little funky, then i throw them in the freezer for a day and they come out smelling just fine. Better than the freezer is just hang them outside on a cold winter day too. . I always had problems with knees blowing out in any other jeans i had. I have never had a knee blowout on these. On my very first pair (which i bought 3 years ago and still have) the seam on the inside of the crotch eventually did wear through and i started treating these as my go to crappy jeans. I wash them regularly, don't care about stains or tears, and they still have held up surprisingly well. The regular washing though has severely faded them and caused them to shrink even more. Not small enough to where i can't wear them, but smaller than i expected. . All that said, i will never buy any other kind of jeans again. I love these jeans.
CONS
  • Let me say i wear levis 511s all day long, and have loved them for years. Though these would be a nice, looser fitted version of the 511 rigid dragon pair i have and love, but the quality of 501 sft is absolutely terrible. And i can echo what everyone is saying about inconsistent shrinking. Really the entire concept of shrink to fit is absurd. With so many cuts from levis and other manufacturers, why go take the risk these won't shrink correctly. Just buy something that fits off the shelf.
  • I've had a couple pairs of shrink to fit jeans and these shrank way more than i expected them and it wasn't proportional. I would suggest to get it at least 3 inches longer (not 2) and 2 sizes bigger or more (unless you like the snug fit). I've only washed the pair once and the length shrank on my pair to where it is almost too short but i love the color and just use these like my skinny jeans. I won't be washing it anymore or i doubt it will fit after that. The color is awesome to me and that's why i'll continue to wear it and hopefully it will stretch out a little like my other shrink to fit jeans. Good luck!
  • I am a super active 67 years young. I have been wearing (and buying levi's since i was 7 years old. Ok. My mom started me at 7 and she bought them). The 501's shrink to fit material has become thinner and thinner as the recent years have gone by. This last set of 3 pair are the thinnest materiel i have seen yet. Thus for the price totally ridiculous. . Thank god the stitching hasn't gone south yet. I suppose quality stitching will be next. . Come on levi get back to what you were renown for and had going for you. Quality material that gave us durability in the fields. Now it's becoming a joke. People are talking about this. Better listen, or you'll be going the way of "t" rex.

It's hard to rate the 'fit' of a shrink to fit jean, i ordered them 2" larger in the waist, and true to size in the inseam. For the sake of full disclosure i normally wear a 36x34 or a 38x34 depending on the brand. Levi's suggests wearing these for "as long as you can" before soaking them to shrink, but these were a very generous 38x34 and there was just no way. I took the shrink process very slow, using the hot soak on my washing machine and checking in regularly. When i achieved my desired fit, i hung them to dry until they were barely damp, and wore them the rest of the day. If you do it right, they fit like they were tailored for you. Learn from youtube, take it slow, check them often.

Just love them! can't go wrong and have nothing bad to say about these :):) came with all original tags and washing instructions."

(0) Question: Hi dear supplier, just one question: be honest please, is it made in mexico or colombia? thank you.

Levi's Men's 501 Original-Fit Jean

My husband won't wear any jeans except levi's 501. I think they look terrific on him. He didn't want stone washed, but the color doesn't look stone-washed to me - they look like the original blue of levi's 501. He wore them today and never said a word about the color, so he obviously couldn't tell either. Besides, the price was exceptional. This pair was only half the price of the same pair he normally buys at a big-name department store. That made me feel even better than anything else.

Fits great just like 501's are supposed to. They are my husbands new favorite pair of jeans and it took me a long time to replace his old favorites. 501's that had to be taken into the taylor and fixed they were getting so worn. So i'm definitely more than happy with this pair.

- S. KristenThey arrived in great shape, and on time. Love the new 'stretch' fabric. Seems like the old 501's that i have been buying for years. The trick will be to keep them as black as possible. I've read to wash them inside out, and to not wash them too often. I've also heard to not wash them? we'll see how that works out. But they fit great.

I got these for my very tall boyfriend, who has a hard time finding jeans that fit. These fit perfectly and he loves the way they look. They do come with all buttons, instead of a zipper. My boyfriend does'nt really mind it, but if that's not something you would like be aware.

Levi's Men's 511 Slim Fit Jean

Best jeans i own, and i love how it's a little bit stretchy. I've never had jeans like that before but that makes it wayyyyy more comfortable. Great fit, pretty much no issues with shrinking and it holds up after months of washing. I revamped my wardrobe a few months ago and bought about 5 jeans. Only one of them was the levi's 511 and the others were from other brands. The ones that i'm wearing the most now are the 511's. I should have just bought them all from levi's in the beginning since there is such an insane selection of 511 jeans.

A modern slim with room to move, the 511 slim fit stretch jeans are a classic since right now. These jeans sit below the waist with a slim fit from hip to ankle. This pair has just the right amount of stretch for all-day comfort. Cut close to the body, the 511 slim is a great alternative to the skinny jean-you'll get the same lean look with added comfort. The narrow leg also means endless style options. For a laid-back daytime look, try a slightly scrunched leg and sneakers. Once night rolls around, try a 2-inch cuff with a chelsea boot. Every drop counts, so we aim to use less water. Our designers are constantly thinking of new ways to create the same styles you love while cutting back on h2o, such as updating finishing techniques to require less water than traditional processes. These are made using our waterless techniques.

Great fit and quality, but i received the wrong color. I expected a faded blue and received a faded greyish-black. My boyfriend like it though, so kept it. Plan to order again and hope we get the right color this time.

I only wear levi jeans - i've found several styles i like. But this style (511 slim fit), fit me perfectly. I'll be buying more, for sure. I can go without a belt too, if i'm wearing a shirt untucked, and the jeans look really good with a shirt tucked.

Levi's Men's 501 Original Shrink-to-Fit Jean

The 501 original shrink-to-fit jeans are made from authentic raw denim that forms to your body. The fit, wear and finish are all unique to you. The 501 original is an iconic straight fit with signature button fly. Looks especially great with a levi's trucker jacket and a simple crewneck tee for a classic all-american look. To find the right size for shrink-to-fit jeans, there are three options. 1) for the old-school technique, buy true to size in the waist and two sizes up in length. Wear them in the tub and keep them on to dry. 2) for those who want to machine wash and dry the jeans, we recommend ordering up. For your waist, increase 1 for sizes 27 -36, 2 for 38 -48, and 3 for 50 and up. And for your inseam, increase 3 for sizes 27 -34 and 4 for 36 and up. 3) for purists who like their denim unwashed, no need to size up. Buy them true to size.

The F.A.Q. for Levi's Men's 501 Original Shrink-to-fit Jeans (00501 0000)

These are shrink to fit, remember that! what i found out through some research is get the same size waist that you normally wear and plus 2-5" on the inseam based on if you want to cuff them or not. When you first get them, soak them in a tub with the water as hot as you can get it. Make sure they are inside out first. After an hour or so put them between two towels and step on them, hang to dry overnight. Let them dry first before wearing them or you'll get uneven stretching. They'll be super stiff after that but the more you wear them, the better they get. Way better than pre-shrunk normal jeans!

The shrink to fit version is the heavy weight denim. Jeans are manufactured in either mexico or haiti. Either way the quality meets expectations considering that levi's has outsourced all of their manufacturing to other countries. I'm a "tweener" in size so ordering my normal comfortable size yielded a washed and dried pair of jeans that fit just perfect. Length is good and waist is spot on. . Stitching is good and there aren't any easily visible defects in the finished product. . 40wx34l

Best levi's men's 501 original shrink-to-fit jeans (00501 0000) in review

I don t wash my jeans (ever) so i ve been trying to find a fit i like in the rigid denim so they wouldn t stretch out with wear. I followed the sizing guidance based on the idea that i would soak them in hot water for two hours, towel dry, and then wear until completely dry. I also used a hairdryer when they were 75% dry just help speed up the process so i could sit down without dying my sofa. . I am 5 ft11 , 180 lbs. I wear a 33x32 in the 511 jeans (with stretch). I ordered a 34x34 realizing there would be no stretch in the waist, and they re a mid rise, not low like the 511. The waist is perfect, and the fit is what i wanted. Relaxed, but not comical boot cut looking jeans. The length is where i want it after drying, i double cuff my jeans with 1. 5 cuff. Hopefully this helps anyone trying to figure out how to order the rigid denim. Now i ll see how well they hold up to daily wear.

I've been wearing 501's for more than 30 years. Yes, the quality has gone down but they are still good jeans. I always buy the shrink to fit ones because i know how to shrink them and know how they shrink to my size. I never have much luck buying the pre shrunk ones because the tags are confusing. I can't count on if they are tagged before or after shrinking because the tagging is always inconsistent. I just buy the shrink to fit and buy them 1 inch bigger in the waist and 2 inches longer in the length. My actual size is 33-30 so i buy 34-32. I then wash them in hot water and dry them in a hot dryer and they shrink perfectly to my size. Be careful washing them though because the first 2-3 times washing them the dye bleeds and will stain other clothes. Just wash them alone or with other jeans the first few times. Actually if you put faded jeans with them it will add a little color to the faded ones. 4 stars instead of 5 because of the quality getting worse over the years.

. Colleen, Midi-Pyrenees

I knew i wanted levi 501's; i like the way they fit on me. I also knew i wanted dark-colored jeans. Everywhere i looked (macy's, jcp, levi store, etc. ) they were on sale for $39. 99 or $49. 99. Here on online store, i bought them for $9. 63. After reading reviews to make sure they were not counterfeit, i took a chance and bought a pair - and i am glad i did! they were made in indochina but the stitching, the look and the feel are all perfect and what i would expect from the $50 pairs. They fit and i like the color, despite the name (note to levi's: no one wants something that is "plankton" colored. It sounds disgusting). Maybe that's why they cost $10. . The only negative is the "box" label with the size on the back (see picture). On the left side there is an "extra" half inch or so. No big deal - i took out a pair of scissors and now it looks perfect. I was so pleased by the jeans that i bought a second pair.

J. Anonymous, South Carolina says

I am so content to have found these pants on online store, i was never able to find my size at any of the local retail or outlet stores, i need the 38" length. Since i have found these on online store, i have made annual orders past 3 years. At first, i was skeptical of the quality and material but these are truly like the 501's that i used to get years ago, not like some of the ones that you find in the stores consisting of stretch denim or other type of lightweight denim. Be sure to follow the directions in order to determine the correct size to order, they'll arrive stiff like canvas and a bit large but given time, they will soften and form to your body, eventually to fit you like a glove. I usually order two pairs a year as they start out as my "going-out" jeans then transition to my work jeans. I see myself continuing to purchase these 501's in the years to come.

Y. Margaret, West Berkshire

I have wore levi 501 shrink to fit since i was in high school. The only jeans that will last a minimum of 10 years and will better and better with each passing year. I have pairs 20+ years old that keep on going. This is the first time i tried black so i will let you know how they fade.

F. Sheila, Suffolk says

These are the closest thing i could find to those old '70's "hard" jeans i wore in high school. They aren't as hard, stiff or smelly as the old ones. And the fabric is thinner. In general, i don't think they have the same quality as the old guys did back in the days before you could even buy pre-washed jeans. But we still like them. They are huge when you get them. I bought a size up in the waist and 3 inches longer in the length and washed them in hot water and dried them in a hot dryer and they came out perfectly. I washed and dried them 3-4 times before i wore them and i love them. Good, all cotton jeans. Oddly, i do miss that smelly smell.

G. Erickson, North Dakota

It used to be that there was only one type of 501, and now levi-strauss has confused matters by introducing a variety of jeans bearing the 501 label, but not having much in common except for the button fly, as pointed out by the many reviews i read here. My memory of 501s goes back to around 1960 (still fairly recent in levis' history); and for me, their golden age was in the mid-1970s. If memory serves me correctly, that generation of 501s was cut an inch or so lower in the waist than the pair i just received, and thus they don't completely satisfy my nostalgic wish to return to my own perception of the "classic" 501. . Online store is to be commended for providing one piece of absolutely vital information about these jeans, information that, incredibly, is missing from some on-line department-store sites, which is which 501s are shrink-to-fit and which are not. Some of the customer-reviewers have clarified the situation further, for which i am grateful. The bottom line is that if you're looking for shrink-to-fit, be sure that the name or description of the 501s explicitly states that. Another customer-reviewer suggested that to get the truly "original" 501s one should only order those designated as "rigid. " i suspect, however, that most of us alive today who are looking for the 501s experience of the 60s and 70s would be happy with any of those designated "shrink-to-fit, " and perhaps some of them are available in a lower-cut waist. . Although i doubt that anyone reading this would be unaware, i'll just review three things about shrink-to-fit: first, it must be obvious that it is impossible to order the right size if one doesn't know whether the jeans are shrink-to-fit or not; one has to order one size larger in the waist measurement and 2-3" longer inseam if the jeans are shrink-to-fit. (i usually wear 31x31 pants and thus bought this pair of shrink-to-fits as 32x34; and after a couple of washings in hot water, they fit perfectly. ) secondly, shrink-to-fit is the best way for guys to show off their "assets, " some going as far as to wash the jeans in boiling water, and (after they've cooled somewhat, but still warm) put them on wet, so that as they dry they can fit the body's contours exactly. Thirdly, many of the non-shrink-to-fit levis on the market today are made of inferior material and bear only a passing resemblance to the classic 501s, which were always shrink-to-fit. Shame on levi-strauss, by the way, for diluting the value of the venerable 501 brand. . I need to return to the matter of the "rigid" designation. If you read through all these reviews, you'll find some customers who were taken aback by the degree of stiffness in these pants, calling them "stiff as a board. " i wouldn't go that far, but i would warn customers that they are stiffer than average and thus may not be to everyone's taste; i'm sure they soften over time, however; and the initial stiffness probably contributes to their longevity, and for many it is an indication of quality. Personally, i expect that my next order will not be for "rigid, " as i have a slight preference for the softer materials. This goes to the heart of the question that we are urged to answer in our reviews: "how do you use this item? " my use is for everyday casual wear, but not for heavy work. . The overall quality of these jeans fits my expectations, and i recommend them for anyone looking for traditional levis, who doesn't want to take a chance on one of the several inferior products levi-strauss has released under the 501 name.

C. Patricia, Centre says

I have loved 501s since i was a kid. Button fly, straight leg, and shrink to fit make them classic. I followed the guidelines adding to the waist and inseam and they fit perfectly after washing and drying in the dryer. Levi's also recommends other methods like putting them on, sitting in a tub, and wearing until dry, or apparently never washing them at all. I don't get those methods. Wearing brand new, wet 501s until they're dry. , hmm, sounds like a good way to turn your lower half blue. I'm guess i'm just too old.

X. Zelda, North East Lincolnshire

Fyi: i bought the rigid not the stf; they still shrink. These are fairly stiff and rugged. Be careful when you wash them that you use cold water and don't dry them too much. Mine ended up a tad shorter than i'd prefer, but the width was fine. I love these. You're supposed to wear them several times before you wash them, like the levis back in the old west that men wore over and over for weeks on end. They don't look dirty though like blue jeans do after wearing them once or twice. They're probably not for everyone, but i prefer durable materials to fashionable or cheaply made. I also have a pair of olive green that i got at a levi outlet store and i love them, too.

P. Meredith, Quebec says

Important- these are the old-school levi's blue jeans. These are not "vanity sizing". These are not "original fit". They are shrink-to-fit, so be sure to follow the sizing guidelines. . I love them. I wish levi's would make the model 514 in a shrink to fit variety, too.

K. Sharon, Hampshire

Just what i wanted. . I usually buy a 32x34 and did so here. . They shrunk just a little, but overall it was absolutely fine. . I washed them warm and then let them air dry a few times before i started just washing them normally. . Most of the shrinkage i notices was in the crossgrain (around), the grain (length) was almost no shrinkage (this i expected, just adding it to help if you guys want the input).

I. Marguerite, North Yorkshire says

Wash them a couple of times in a hot dryer cycle, and they shrink right to a very nice fit. Strong denim, nice dark color once they've shrunk. . My favorite thing about this vendor: these jeans come with a pre-printed price tag of almost $70 on it, and they are sold for that much at all the stores near me, so these guys sell these jeans a lot cheaper than most places.

Z. Morgan, Brent says

These are the true shrink to fit jeans from levis. The material might be a little lighter than in the old days but it's still acceptable. I ordered 4 inches longer in length and 2 inches longer in the waist and they shrank perfectly to fit 36" x 30". The levi company website has shrink to fit jeans that are 25% stretch synthetic and they're calling them the "original". No way! or, you can pay $240 for their 1960s style cotton original jeans. No way, again!

B. Meyer, Surrey

I have two pairs. One pair i've washed a half dozen times due to life, one pair i've never washed. I normally wear 30/32 pants, and the 30/34 fits great either way. The washed pair is perfect length, fit, and a sharp rich blue color with some custom fading. It can't be worn two full days in a row. The unwashed pair is still the same dark color as new, isn't quite as fitted, is more rigid but not nearly as much as new. It has the advantage of being able to be worn multiple days in a row with no consequence. . Before many washes, i soaked the washed pair for an hour in hot water and then wore until dry. That's no fun but it helped customize the fit. The unwashed pair had one soak so far and could probably use another to tighten the fit.

T. Eva, California says

They are the kind i like. The shrink to fits have a different fit than the regular 501's. I normally wear a 36-32 in the regular 501's, but a 34-32 are just right in the shrink to fits. . Just have to make sure they don't end up in the dryer

A. Joanne, Tameside

Online store asks if they fit. They do not fit - but that's my fault, not levi strauss's fault. I went for 40" waist size for my 35" waist, but either 5" was way too much to expect in the shrinkage department or i'm daintier around the curves than i thought. My bad. . I used the ancient technique of wearing them in the bathtub. Does no one do that anymore? that was, like, a cosmic law when i was a kid. . Sitting there in the bathtub wearing levi's, i did notice the dye is remarkably color-fast. The water color showed little change. Props. . I give 4/5 stars regardless of fit - the fabric is strong and heavy and good, but i'm skeptical that is the same fabric as when i was seventeen. Seems slightly, slightly less sturdy. Good, though.

Q. Lindsey, Kentucky says

I started buying 501 stf jeans a few years ago as an introduction to raw denim. I wanted to see what the raw denim craze was all about, and at typically $40, the 501 stf is about the cheapest pair of raw denim jeans you can find. Once you get the sizing and shrinking process down, you'll love them! here is what i do:. 1. ) i size up 2 inches in the length and size down one in the waist. I wear a 36x30 in levi's 541 (also a great pair of jeans if you want a slimmer look), and so in 501 stf i order a 35x32. The extra 2" in the length allows me to do a very small double cuff, which i prefer. 2. ) i then soak them by themselves (inside out with no agitation to retain color) in a tub of hot water for 30-45 minutes. I make sure to weigh them down and submerge them. 3. ) i then let them hang dry, and they are usually dry within 24 hr. You'll see a lot of people recommend wearing them while wet, but i've seen this lead to baggy knees and diaper butts in the jeans. 4) then i simply wear the crap out of them. They are very tight in the waste at first, but after about 2-3 days of continuous wear, they stretch and become extremely comfortable in the seat/thigh area. . One caveat about these jeans is that since they are raw denim, they are fairly stiff and not soft. They will soften up over time with wear and washes.

R. Reed, Arizona

I really can't believe this, they actually fit! about 10-12 years back, levi's off-shored production. Whatever. Shrink-to-fit 501's no longer fit. Believe me, i spent 100's of dollars trying and failing. The per-shrunk worked for a while, then they seemed to give up on any sort of pattern or fit (big saggy butt / tight, skinny legs that wouldn't go over boots). I figure, what the heck, i'll gamble another $55 and try these. They are totally kool, like old times! this pair was made in poland, i'm going to cross my fingers and order a couple more pairs.

. Nancy, Washington says

This product is as close to the stf blue jean denims made & sold in the 60's as anything they've made since. They even replicated the outseam structure and inseam structure of the 60's time frame, they wear and fade just like the iconic structure & fit 0f late 60's blue levi's as you"re going to find in the current era.

U. Neva, Mississippi

Bought the khaki variant of the levi 501 stf jeans, and i was pleasantly surprised to see they were made of white oak cone denim. Very high quality denim made in north carolina, but the jeans were assembled in mexico. I purchased a pair of the rigid stf and they did not shrink up as nicely as these did, but were not made of cone demin fyi. I disregard levi's sizing suggestion and purchase in my true waist size and 2 in longer inseam. Shrinks up perfectly on a quick wash on hot machine wash. Very happy with these, just took a star off for not making the whole product in usa.

. Helen, Wigan says

These jeans are fantastic. This was my first foray into raw denim, and i was really worried about them fitting poorly. I bought the same size i always buy because i thought i wouldn't wash them. However they were fairly baggy unwashed, so i did the shrink fit in the tub full of hot water for hour and it was great. Apparently i have been buying my pants too long because these are perfect. I have never had a pair of pants fit me so well. I took one star off because the belt loop came unattached which was really inconvenient. I needed them for something so i sewed them back together myself. It's not perfect, but i guess they're more mine now. I will probably buy more of these.

W. Melissa, District of Columbia

I've been wearing these for over 50 years. The most significant change is where they are made. The most recent pair is from haiti, the previous ones were from egypt and before that from mexico. Because they shrink so much, they're a bit tricky to buy because the off-the-shelf fit does not correspond to their fit after about four wash and (hot) dry cycles. They shrink 10%. That's most noticeable in the length. Waist shrinkage can be offset somewhat by stretching during wear. After they're washed the first few times, it's a struggle to close the waist but the jeans eventually relax through the waist. The shrinkage in the length is forever.

N. Broyles, Bexley says

Levi's 501 shrink to fit jeans are my favorite by far. They're reasonably priced, have a button fly, age well, and they're fairly sturdy. For those of you who don't know, these jeans aren't sanforized which means that they will shrink quite a bit once they are washed so keep that in mind when making your purchase. As i said above, they do age fairly well and every pair that i've owned always ends up looking nice throughout its life (actually, i still have every pair, although some of them do have rips and tears). . Overall these are a pretty good value if you are interested in jeans that aren't sanforized.

. Dorine, Rhone-Alpes

I've been wearing 501s for going on fifty years now, and as far as i can see they are basically the same good product they've always been. It takes a few washings to get them broken in, but once you do, they fit beautifully if you order the right size. I'm a 36-29 so i order a 40-32 and they always shrink down just right. The idea that you should wear them in a tub of water when you get them is ridiculous. They break in nicely just from washing and wearing them a few times. I like wranglers also, but these are a timeless classic.

S. Anonymous, Warrington says

I where 35 w 36 length. Very hard to find 35 waist jeans. 36 to baggy, 34 too tight. So i decided to test my luck with these shrink to fit. . I ordered 36 w / 38 l washed them in hot water and put in the dryer and they fit perfectly. Moving forward i'll only wash and air dry but needed to put them in the dryer to shrink them down to my size. . I look forward to years of use out of these jeans (as long as my waste doesn't get too big! ).

Top /levis mens original shrink jeans Review

Disadvantage and Critical reviews

A. Neva, Herefordshire says

This is my third pair of 501 stfs, but this is easily the thinnest (meadow moss). All my others were the rigid versions and colors, but this was not. Feel is the same as the rest, as these fit as well, but the material used is definately thinner and this color/pair is more suited for summer use and year round than the midweight versions i had gotten in the past (silver, back, rigid, and an off the shelf brown). Lovethe jeans in general, but i wish this were made of consistent materials.

Q. Kristen, Kentucky

Others have covered these jeans in detail and advised us to order the 501 shrink to fit rigid indigo, online store labels it "rigid stf". I am here to tell you these are now down to 9oz denim and are in no resemblance to quality 501 stf from yesteryear. . I once was in a levi's store and asked them why they still mark the red tags with "xx" on shrink to fit when this was historically the mark of the weight of the denim, so 20oz denim when you convert the roman numerals to denim weight. They looked confused and had never heard of that before. I was confused they were confused, i wasn't the one working at the levi's store. The inside pocket now states to look for the "xx" to ensure you are getting authentic levi's top quality denim. But it is only 9oz. They are also running terribly smaller and i wish i ordered a longer inseam, but again as others have noted the sizing depends on where they are made, mine were made in mexico. . Quality issues:. . The red label was not stitched on correctly, or the tag is so cheaply made (feels like paper) that it tore out of the stitching within 3 days with a belt on. See picture. . I ordered size 32 x 34. I measured the new never shrunk inseam because it seemed way to short, it was only 32", maybe 32. 5" if i was being generous with the tape measure. It should be at least 34" minimum! i posted a picture next to my old stf 32x34s (they are black and behind the new jeans and have been shrunk) you can clearly see if i shrink the new ones i will lose about 2+ inches and have high water pants as they are only about . 5 inches longer than the shrunk jeans. See second picture. . Terrible quality control. . Here is what i am frustrated about. Levi's knows how to make fantastic denim, they just aren't anymore. Levi's knows how to make consistent, uniform sized, reliable jeans with far and above the best materials, they just aren't anymore. Why? the pricing hasn't changed, so why has everything else. . In my search for quality denim at lower cost (it is not hard to spend $100+ on raw denim jeans) i found something in my local kmart that may help some of you out. They are not shrink to fit but are likely the most inexpensive unwashed denim you can find. They are rustler indigo jeans (only the indigo appear to be raw unwashed, i have only found them at kmart). They are at least 13-14oz denim. There is only one cut (boot cut). . Their cut is actually fairly similar to the 501 if it had a zipper, a little too wide at the bottom though, buy the size you actually need, maybe even a little smaller, not like the shrink to fit sizing. They stretch out over time a little bit assuming you aren't washing them. For the price if the fit isn't right have someone tailor it, still cheaper than levi's and you can feel the difference in the quality of denim rustler is using. . Now for the best part. They are only $12 and go on sale for $10! also they have a 1 year warranty where they will send you a new pair if it fails. They age very well and show nice wear marks (again assuming you are buying what they label as "indigo" which are unwashed and stiff raw denim). Don't wash them, treat them like shrink to fit or raw denim. Once they are nice and worn in you can do a soak, freeze them, etc. Lookup how to take care of raw denim. Not nearly as cool as levi's, i know, but levi's is forgetting their entire history as an american icon and really loosing reputation. No i do not work for kmart or rustler, just a guy who likes jeans that don't fall apart in a month.

. Kellie, West Berkshire says

I bought the rigid stf (shrink to fit). They fit after washing, as expected based on my previous pairs of the same rigid stf (dark indigo) size. The tag says that they were made in egypt, not mexico. I do have a problem with these jeans. There is only a single stitch-line down the inseam. Granted that i've never blown out an inseam, but it bothers me. It might bother you too if you're used to the double stitching (as shown in the pictures). Maybe i just got mine from a bad batch.

Z. Cecilia, Barking and Dagenham

It's sad to see that levi has changed their fabric, i've been wearing these 501 shrink to fit forever and these are the worst quality i've ever received from levi. I ordered another pair from another company hoping they would be the old denim, they weren't the quality is just so bad. First wash they were so wrinkled and crumpled that they were practically useless for anything other than work pants. I wear nothing but 501 jeans and have for over 50 years. I now have to search for a suitable replacement because i will not purchase this type of levi 501 shrink to fit again. The denim is below the quality we are use to.

. Gladys, Darlington says

The cut on these shrink to fit jeans is bad. I have other sanforized jeans that hold their original shape that fit far better right off the rack. I hot-soaked these three times to try to get a better fit but in the end they still don't. At $39. 95 i could have bought four pair of rustlers. It's not in the material: it's in the initial cutting that the problem lies. They wont be going back because yes i've shrunk them but that's what should happen when it's faulty manufacturing.

L. Patricia, Rheinland-Pfalz

What a crying shame. These used to be my go-to jeans for darn near 30 years. I bought two pair, figured one had to fit. Did the magic in the bathtub, too big, tried hot water in the washing machine, they fit, then stretched out after a days wear. I returned one pair. I kept one pair. They are an awful light denim, the construction awful, just an all round shoddy imitation of a classic levis jean. Why on earth are they being made in egypt? the pair i kept will be for yard work, painting etc. Don't waste your money. These are not worth it.

E. Newell, Michigan says

My son was determined to get a pair of 501's so i finally broke down and bought him a pair. We followed the sizing directions, i measured rather than going by pant size. After we soaked, rinsed, dripped and 'shaped' the pants were too big and too long. I added the inch to the waist and 3 inches to the length but no go. We did it again, same problem, too big. I threw them in the washer on hot and high spin, same thing. So now, he wears a belt and his cowboy boots and it sorta works otherwise he looks like a 'gangsta'. Now i know for next time. Note that this was just our experience yours maybe different. People love these jeans, just wasn't a success for us.

J. Paige, Haringey

Not made in usa. Made in egypt. Expensive for a foreign version of traditional levis. The denim texture is strange. Wranger brand uses old style usa denim fabric. This egyptian made denim is not the same old denim. The weave of the material is nothing like old usa made levis. . I am not sure if i would recommend them. They are very different in fit and material from the old usa - and later mexico made/assembled levis, that i bought in the last century.

X. Emily, Champagne-Ardenne says

Horrible quality. Worst pair of levis i have ever owned. I have literally t-shits thicker and less wrinkly. So far they are allowing me to return them. I hope that goes smoothly. Keeping it real, i could have gotten a better pair in the dumpster. . Update. . While i really disliked the pants i was given a refund quickly with not hassle at all. They also allowed me to ship them back for free.

R. Megan, Kirklees

These were listed as "stretch" jeans, but instead are "shrink-to-fit". Totally different. Mislabelled product.

O. Julie, District of Columbia says

I bought levis jeans for my husband several times in the past and definitely this doesn't seem authentic! . They  runs very small and doesn't launder well. Not reccomanded

. Edith, Bracknell Forest

These jeans are a huge disappointment. They are made of very thin, cheap cotton that wrinkles irreversibly, despite 30 minutes of ironing, (and who wants to iron their jeans even if the wrinkles would iron out? ) they also have multiple snags in the fabric that i had to pull through to the inside. The tag is not the leather tag that is standard on levi's, but some sort of cardboard. I ordered these for my son's birthday, which took place right before we left the country for a month, and when i returned and washed them to get his clothes ready for college, i found out what i had thrown my money away on as i am now outside of the return window of opportunity. We are a levi's family, and these are not like any other levi's we've ever purchased. I've learned my lesson. No more jeans from online store for us.

D. Watson, Alsace says

The quality i was expecting from a levi product wasn't there, levi shrink to fit use to be high quality jean materials. Buttons were fit tight and snug into jean materials. I will no longer buy levi's. Wrangler is 100 times better and built with quality jean materials. So when shopping for quality don't by levi!

. Marguerite, Poole

These are the only blue jeans i buy. 1 inch in the waist 2 inches in length in my size, as you wear them during the day they will stretch. I don't know about the color, not the same as i am used to. I have been wearing them for over fifty years. These newest ones don't appear to be as well made, and the denim is definitely thinner than previous pairs of jeans. When i was a kid they used to cost about $6. 50 for adult jeans. So like everything else the cost is unreasonable, workmanship is inferior, and materials inferior. But comparative cost is acceptable when you can get them on sale. The jeans won't last ten years for me like they used to, but 4-5 years is acceptable. It is a shame that we americans "settle" for just about everything in our throwaway society. Service was good , received them on time as promised.

F. Alba, Windsor and Maidenhead says

For 30 years (about every 4 years) i buy 4 new 501 shrink-to-fit jeans. I will buy no other jeans. Until now. I bought 2 new pair, washed them as i always have, and the button holes are shredding and catching the buttons and fraying and are already not closing. My 4 year old jeans seams are in better condition than the brand new pairs. Obviously levis has lowered themselves to the modern world of crappy construction. It's a sad day for me. I never thought they'd change-i thought levis would be the one constant in an ever-changing world of companies lowering their standards and changing for the worse. But nothing is sacred. I will never buy levis again.

N. Elanor, Hessen

It's been a while since we purchased levi's 501's. I'd forgotten the labor you have to put into those jeans before you wear them. It was done and they're (as always) perfect, but next time i'll buy the pre-shrunk. This is a pain to go through every time i buy levi's 501's that are labeled stf.

T. Ruby, Shropshire says

I have been wearing levis for 40+ years. The quality has now deteriorated to the point of no longer being worth the money! made in hattie, shrink way more than 11/2" in waist and about 4" in length. Double stitching is cheap leg hems (bottoms) not the same as ole! the weight is considerably lighter, cant even wear the size i have worn for years, same stf jeans! i haven't bought any for quite a few years and am no longer a die hard levis gal, will gladly sacrifice the button fly stf for quality clothing! these will go back! wake up levi strauss you have given up quality for cost, shame on you!

I. Garner, Niedersachsen

Very disappointed with quality of the sewing of these. The top button hole was nothing but a small slit about half the size of ithe button with no stitches , i had to cut the slit longer to accommodate the button. For the price the quality should higher. The fit was great. 6/16/2016. After a few washing and being more and more upset by horrible quality of the stitching and the denim being low quality i took them to a large retailer who confirmed what i suspected, they are counterfeit. No red tag, along with overall quality. Very dissapointed that online store does not do a better job of looking into this . I am not the first to complain. I'be been wearing levi's 501 shrink to fit for over 55 yrs. Know the real item. Don't buy this junk at any price.

I ordered up 1 size in the waist and 2 sizes in the inseam. I could have done 1 size up in the inseam, because i have to cuff them. It's a regular sized cuff, but if i try to wear them uncuffed there's too much break in the pants & they're just a tad too long. . For $35 raw jeans, you can expect imperfections based on mass production: the seams are off on these things and it's really annoying me now. Too bad i didn't notice until after i washed & dried them. The left leg is fine, but the right leg of my pants has a twisted pant leg. The outer seem is turned towards the front of my leg, and i only noticed this after i cuffed my jeans and saw the seam. Pretty disappointing, but they are $35, so i guess that's what you get.

I have a 36" waist, and i bought a 38" stf. It's tight. The fabric is thin, and i was worried they were counterfeit levi's, so i scanned the barcode. . They legit; however, they are made in haiti, and the quality coming out of haitian factories is poor. Too many cuts are made in quality. The fabric is too thin and lightweight to be a quality raw denim, and i'm worried about the fit after first washing. . I wear nothing but levi 501 shrink to fit jeans. I've been wearing them since i was 16, and i'm 52 now. I bought a pair from zappos four weeks ago and they were the quality i expect. This . . . Is crap. . I'm very disappointed in both levi's and this vender for selling them.

Waist is ok, a little tight but way too short! . Wish the would give the option like in the past to get it with 30 waist & 31 length. 32 is way too long. Wish i would have ordered a 30 waist instead of the 29 but too late now.

H. Susan, New South Wales

These jeans look and feel nice. I have not washed them yet. On 11/24/17 the description said they were zipper closure when i purchased these jeans from online store. These pants are button closure. I have never purchased button closure jeans before. I will continue to use them and see how i like button closure. I noticed that the blue dye from the jeans stained my shoes and shirt. I did not expect that to happen from this brand of jeans.

Ok, i finally figured out what is wrong with the sizing from online store. Although online store lists all these 501 jeans as "shrink-to-fit", they're not. You have to select the color+stf ("rigid stf", "black stf", etc), or you get regular pre-sized jeans. I had thought the problem was with levis, but it's with online store.

I bought these for myself (a female) for some sturdy, loose-fitting, deep-pocketed (women's jeans never have any pocket room! ) jeans for wearing while working in the yard. I believe i bought them 31" or 30" long, since i didn't want to have to roll up the cuffs, as i would with 32" longs. I should have known as soon as i saw a label. It said something to the effect that for getting the most wear out of these jeans, do not wash before wearing. ("washing would ruin the texture" or some crap like that. For goodness' sake, they're jeans, not silk stockings! ). Well, i'm cautious and always wash new clothing before wearing. They shrank right up, and while this doesn't affect their usefulness as work-around-the-yard jeans, i can't bring myself to wear them in public, which is a shame since the pair i bought are such a nice color. I feel cheated since i have a much cheaper pair of jeans that were 30" and didn't shrink up like these did.

The size shrinked after the first washed. It will not fit after wash i bought extra an inches in my size 34x34 it sxtra but after washed i can't fit it in the pant tiny and it go over my ankle. The wait lost at least 3 inches. Bad bad bad. I thought this only happen in việt nam 30 years ago where cheap sida clothing sale on the sidewalk. . .

Very inconsistent sizing. No quality control. The pair i bought seemed constructed from mismatched sections. Normal length for the size listed, slightly tight waist, but the seat was several several sizes too large. All this, after shrinking. When the jeans were tried on before shrinking, they appeared uniformly over-sized, and the assumption was that they would shrink evenly. This pair now looks like the lower half of a clown's costume, and are basically useless for me. It's what i've come to expect from levi's products these days. Buy four pair and three will be acceptable if you're lucky. My recommendation is find the lowest price, roll the dice and hope for the best.

Y. Jessica, Telford and Wrekin says

I guess i should count myself lucky because i have a 20- or 30-year-old pair in the same size to compare these to. But when i do, i'm not crazy about what i see. The fit is about the same, except that the old ones have been through the dryer many a time, and these have only been hung up to air dry. I'm thinking to go up an inch, but after 20+ years, i suppose that's onlly fair. . Otherwise, the denim itself is lighter weight and the craftsmanship is not comparable. The seams inside the leg, for example, now have one row of stitching, rather than two, and the stitch count (stitches per inch) is definitely lower, suggesting an emphasis on quantity over quality. . They're still a decent pair of jeans for the price - this is my second pair and they definitely out-last another big brand. Though my point of comparison with the other brand is 1/3 the price, so i probably shouldn't expect much. For what it's worth, i wear these at least six days a week - in cooler weather, anyway - and wash them only when they really start to look disreputable. So for me, if they last 3-4 months, that's a pretty reasonable value.

I used to live in these jeans. I would never think of wearing anything but levi's 501 stf. Somehow, levi's has managed to completely destroy the one item that the entire company was built upon. The denim is flimsy. The new stitching is very feminine and cheap looking. I won't be buying levi's ever again. For those of you who are new to the 501 stf, you're paying way too much for an inferior product.

V. Audrey, Hackney says

It has been about ten years since i have ordered 501's . I used to order them out of colorado. Thank goodness i have about 20 or so pairs of the older 501's . Some that go back to the early 80's. All i can say is that they are a lower quality denim, very thin. The threading is of less quality also. And the dye is worse than the past. After one hand soak, the color has faded way too much . Too bad big american company's have out sourced cheap labor and materials just for a buck. Also a pocket was sown too small than the other.

B. Anonymous, Iowa

As others have mentioned levi's 501 are not the same as they used to be! the material is very thin, 12 oz. Maybe. I am 56 yrs. Old and have been wearing 501 jeans since the sixties. They have gone down hill folks. I have ordered 3 pair on line, 1 pair made in mexico, 2 pair from egypt, all look and fit a little different. All three pair the right leg is about a 1/2 to 1 inch shorter than the left leg. At $50+ a pair, that is unexceptable.
