Kindle Voyage 6 Inch 4gb Ereader (53 002680) 182

Review for /kindle voyage 6 inch 4gb ereader

Price was 199. Upgraded to the voyage from the paperwhite (first gen). It wasn't until i turned on my voyage and saw the white screen that i realized my paperwhite has a very noticeable blue hue to the light. However the voyage has its own lighting problem: there is a clear gradient with a slight blueish hue at the bottom of the screen and a yellowish hue at the top of the screen. Sounds like this is a problem on a lot of the voyages. Thankfully i don't find it distracting from the reading experience and it is only really noticeable when i am actually looking for it. . The processing power on the voyage is noticeably faster than my paperwhite. (the first gen paperwhite had 800 mhz processor, whereas voyage has 1 ghz). Typing on the keyboard goes much smoother and fast on the voyage. Page turns are quicker. . The haptic key function is actually kind of cool. I didn't think i would care for it and that i would probably turn it off, but the tactile feedback is reminiscent of the good old mechanical buttons on the kindle keyboard. I think i will probably keep the haptic feedback on (unless it winds up using a lot of the battery power). . The automatic sensor lighting is a bit unsteady. I suspect i will wind up turning it off permanently. . The voyage seems to handle pdfs a lot better than my paperwhite. I am very happy about this! . . The 300 ppi screen of the voyage is wonderful. Very crisp text and pictures. . And i am glad they removed the on/off button from the bottom of the device (where it was on the paperwhite). . In a nutshell, the screen lighting and the light sensor need slight improvements but overall i am satisfied with my kindle voyage experience so far. It is much better than my kindle paperwhite (and i thought it was great). In regards to the cost, i think it is a bit more expensive than it should be, but i read hours every day and so am willing to pay a premium for my e-reader.

Prologue

The kindle voyage is significantly smaller, thiner, and lighter than kindle paperwhite. It's very comfortable when holding in hand. The page turn buttons make it much easier to turn pages and the vibration feedback feels terrific. Texts are more sharper than ever - its ppi is even higher than ipad. This is by far the most exquisite e-ink reader on the planet. Kindle voyage e-reader, 6 high-resolution display 300 ppi with adaptive built-in light, pagepress sensors, wi-fi - includes special offers Review (53 002680)

Screen on voyage is slightly better that in my ancient kindle keyboard (see photos). But not much and take into account that voyage on foto with bare screen and kindle keyboard is with screen protector on it. . The backlight on voyage is just an annoyance for me - i have to switch it off, because my eyes better with reflected light. With backlight it like just an ipad - ok to read but more strain on your eyes. . I do not like the touch buttons on voyage. The real buttons on kindle keyboard are better and much handy. And my old kindle have a 3. 5 phone socket! the phone adapter for voyage is big and costs $40. . So overall i think that was a bad idea to spend $110 on refurbished voyage (and absolutely craze full $200 price). -Z. Ophelia

PROS
  • There's a lot to like about the voyage. But, it really comes down to what works for you as a reader. In addition to the voyage, i own a 3rd generation kindle fire and an ipad 3. I usually have the same book on all three devices. If i'm outside and reading, the only choice worth my time is the voyage thanks to the non-glare screen. If i'm on vacation and packing light i bring the voyage and the fire. If the book i'm reading has illustration and/or color or black and white pics, the voyage is the least satisfying unless i'm outside (but you knew that). There is a browser in the voyage, but quite honestly, i consider it a pretty much worthless toy that struggles to render about any but the simplest screens. The battery life of the voyage vastly exceeds that available from the fire or the ipad. Weeks vs about 10 hours. The voyage is the lights with the fire not far behind. The ipad is a beast compared to the kindles. So, which is my favorite? yup, it depends. From a power device, in my opinion, the ipad reigns but at a cost, namely, battery time, glare, and weight. The 3rd gen kindle fire is a fine reader but has the same battery and glare issues, plus the processor really struggles and that carousel is silly. The voyage is tops for outside, battery life, font crispness and weight but photos and illustrations leave a lot to be desired. I bookmark extensively so i can switch between the three at a moments notice. It's all in what you need at the time.
  • I started with the basic kindle, then upgraded to the kindle paperwhite and after i accidentally dropped that one in the pool, online store was kind enough to give me a 20% discount on a new kindle of my choice, so i chose the voyage. Gotta love online store customer service! however, while i enjoy the voyage there is one downside. The back is not rubberized like the kindle paperwhite and since i do most of my reading at the beach or pool, the back is always facing the sun. The voyage gets soooo hot that you can t hold it. I never had that issue with the paperwhite. The whole point of a kindle is that you can read it outside in the sun. I m going to have to buy a cover although i did not want to add to the weight but hopefully that will take care of it being too hot to hold. Other than that, the pages look nice and white but i use the page turners that are the same as the paperwhite - by touching the right side of the page (i m a leftie so i hold the kindle in my left hand). I find it way too awkward to press the voyage s new page turners. So in the end, if i had to do it again, i think i would stay with the paperwhite.
CONS
  • Let me start by saying i ve been using a kindle paperwhite for at least 4 years and love it. I ve been looking at the voyage since it was introduced and secretly wanting one, but couldn t justify the price to myself because i already have the paperwhite. When the price for a certified refurbished voyage dropped during a one-day sale to $134, i finally pounced. I m sad to say that i m sending it back. The main reason i wanted the voyage was the pagepress function. I loved the idea of being able to read with only a small press on the side of the voyage to turn the page. Unfortunately, i found the pagepress to be unpredictable. Sometimes i could tap the pagepress sensor and the page would turn, and sometimes i had to press, and the pressure needed to turn the pages wasn t consistent. This very quickly became a distraction from the reading experience instead of a convenience. It didn t take long before i reverted to the swipe page turn that works on the paperwhite. The text resolution is indeed better than the paperwhite, but not by a great deal. Maybe if you read hours and hours every day, the difference would be meaningful, but for me it wasn t particularly. I suppose if i lost my paperwhite or otherwise needed to buy a new kindle, i d consider the voyage, as the lightness and slightly increased screen resolution were nice, and i liked the improved face material. However, i d never pay the list price of $200 it s just not that much of an improvement on the paperwhite.
  • I've an original kindle, kindle paperwhite, and finally this "special offers" kindle voyage. This is the worst kindle i've owned thus far. I only bought it because my paperwhite just up and died on me after 2-3 years of use. My original kindle is still running strong, albeit with the far inferior brightness and contrast. That is the only thing going for the voyage; it *does* have a wonderfully clear display. . I didn't think that the special offers would be that bad, but they just get more annoying over time. Every time you wake the device up from sleep, you have to "swipe" to get them to go away and actually get back to reading. This is annoying enough, but the introduction of an on-screen button to go to their special offers means that you have to be careful not to hit that. Then to further rub salt in the wound, the swipe detection isn't accurate and only picks up on the gesture 50% of the time, at best, so i frequently have to swipe multiple times. . The one thing i was excited for in this edition, the return of the page turning buttons, ended up being poorly implemented. The original kindle's page turning buttons could be hit at an angle, so you could easily nudge them with a knuckle or middle finger digit. This allowed you to easily turn pages even when your hands were dirty or full with food. These buttons need to be hit head on. Furthermore, they frequently register multiple hits, couple the page to turn multiple times. Or better still, because there's no distinction between the edge of the "button" and the screen, you can very easily turn a page one direction only to additional tap the screen itself and turn the page back! . . My final complaint is that the touch sensing for the bottom of the page (to cycle through the location and page number visibility) doesn't seem to register very well on this edition vs. My previous paperwhite. It generally never registers for me, making that feature useless now. . In summary, every new kindle edition delivers an improved visual reading experience, but they unfortunately keep making all interactions with the kindle device itself more and more frustrating.
  • After reading exclusively on kindle paperwhite, and kindle voyage e-readers the past few years, i simply can't return to a conventional paper book. The size, clarity, and features are superb. While i enjoyed my first kindle paperwhites, i initially upgraded to the voyage for the improved resolution of 300 dots-per-inch (dpi). As soon as i had my first voyage charged, i juxtaposed the improved resolution to the earlier paperwhites to see if my eye could discern a difference. The difference is significant. For my old eyes, any improvements in resolution translate into less fatigue and greater overall reading experience. To be sure, if i sit to read for several hours, my eyes are far less fatigued and strained with the higher resolutions. . That said, the remaining features such as haptic margin buttons, and flush design are less important. Nice, but not a game changer, for me. The embedded features such as wordwise, vocabulary, dictionary and xray function the same across the entire kindle line. One note: while almost all kindle-available books were initially "xray enabled" a few years ago, there are fewer and fewer books available with this feature enabled. I'm unsure if online store charges the publishers to enable this feature. I use it often, especially with novels bearing scores of characters. If i forget the specific role or incidence of a character, or, a character is introduced early in a novel and doesn't re-emerge again until late chapters, xray permits an efficient, single-step to define the character's role and frequency. Those details are important to my overall experience, so i'd prefer online store enable the feature more often, as opposed to the present trend of fewer and fewer books being "xray enabled. ". . My chief complaint with this product: light leaks. My first voyage developed what appears like small pinholes of bright, white light penetrating the foundation page color or texture. At first, it was just one. Then another, and another, and finally a third appeared. Finally, it was like a constellation of stars on a page. Very, very distracting. Similar to having smudges, or debris on a conventional book. If you are one that can overlook lots of that, it's not an issue. . When the issue first surfaced on my 1st kindle voyage, i'd had the unit but a couple of months. I contacted online store, and they sent me another unit at a pro-rated price. The replacement unit was a refurbished, or returned unit. I charged the replacement unit, and unfortunately the replacement, too, had the same pinhole light leaks. . Frustrated, i decided to purchase yet another voyage from my local bestbuy retailer, so i could shuffle through their stock to ensure i had an acceptable unit. I went through 3 units on their shelves before finding one that was acceptable. Since i'd had sour experiences, i purchased best buy's additional product protection. . Sadly, the additional year of product protection wasn't enough. My voyage was 2 months out of the extended warranty period and it, too, has begun leaking light through those small but horribly distracting pinholes of light leaking onto the page. Whoever attends to online store's supplier / manufacturer quality control needs to address this. If the product lasted at least 5 years before developing technical issues, i'd be okay, but having issues new, out of the box, or within one and two years is unacceptable. . Since prefer reading on the e-reader to conventional books, i have little if any recourse but to yet again purchase another voyage. I will likely go to best buy and comb through their stock to ensure i find one which is clean.

kindle voyage ereader highresolution Kindle Voyage E-reader, 6" High-Resolution Display (300 ppi) with Adaptive Built-in Light, PagePress Sensors, Wi-Fi - Includes Special Offers (Switch to Mobile/Desktop Version)

I love my new kindle, but i'm not sure the extra cost for a voyage edition was worthwhile. The "buttons" on the sides of the unit are a mixed blessing because you can accidentally depress one while simply holding the unit, and there are simpler ways to turn a page using just the screen. The unit feels more solid than my prior version (now missing in action), and the finte cover i chose is excellent. I know there are some advantages to the adjustable lighting, etc. , but i just don't know if these are really worth the higher price. It's also hard to say whether the additional backlights make enough of a difference in readability to justify the extra cost. It's tough comparing units when you're shopping online, and i haven't tried to find a store with kindles to directly compare the standard unit with the voyage; therefore, i can't really gauge the difference in terms of readability and lighting. But the extra buttons, which sounded great in the write-up, are somewhat disappointing.

Click to see NoticeKindle Voyage 6 Inch 4gb Ereader (53 002680)"I'm very happy with this purchase. I replaced my first-generation paperwhite (which was misplaced on a trip) with the voyage. I didn't use a case on my paperwhite, but find a case almost necessary for the voyage due to the fact that the screen is not recessed, making it easier to scrape the screen on surfaces. I did specifically look for a case with edges flush with the voyage (i got the swees online store kindle voyage 6" case cover) so that it felt more natural to hold. I was a bit aggressive about keeping my paperwhite screen clean, and hair and dirt would sometimes get stuck around the inside bevel where the screen met the plastic, so i'm very happy with the flush screen and the separate page turn buttons on the voyage. . The pictures show the voyage in the swees online store kindle voyage 6" case cover mentioned above."

All-New Kindle Oasis E-reader - Graphite, 7 High-Resolution Display 300 ppi , Waterproof, Built-In Audible, 8 GB, Wi-Fi - Includes Special Offers

The screen size is just right, and the device is light and very portable, with little to no glare and an evenly lit screen. I like the page-turn buttons very much, and think they're more intuitive switched, going forward with the bottom button and back with the top. The touch screen is also good, though it's easy to accidentally go forward many pages with a too firm touch or misplaced palm on the thin side. You can't rotate the screen to read landscape as you can on a tablet, though i don't miss that feature at all. . I love the popup box for index entries and endnotes. Most of the time, i prefer to read with the white/black screen inverted, especially in low light. White on black text may be more readable for people with vision problems. Images are displayed as negatives in this mode. The black is a dark gray, with much less contrast than on a fire tablet or my ipad. It's convenient and easy to purchase kindle books from the device. I use airplane mode most of the time to extend battery life, which has been about two days, not weeks, so better than a tablet and tolerable, if not as good as expected. It recharges very fast with the quick charger, which, i think, should come with the oasis, as well as the charging cable. I already had a charger, bought for my old fire hd, so didn't need to buy a new one. . I purchased the deluxe leather cover in merlot, a deep brownish red. The suede is easy to hold, but shows little scuff marks from handling and quickly looks comfortably worn and dull. I would have preferred a pebble finish to suede and might opt for the waterproof cover if this one wear out. The cover is held on magnetically, so it can fall or fly off occasionally. It's cleverly designed to fit over the thin parts of the device, keeping a slim profile, but leaving the thick business end unprotected. However, the device is so small, it will fit in almost any handbag or pack and stay safe. On the whole, i love the new oasis. It's not completely perfect but close enough for 5 stars (since i can't give it a 4. 5) and i would purchase it again.

All New Kindle Oasis Reader Built (53 006476) FAQ.

I really like the size and everything of the tablet. The text looks great and the lights are very clear. My biggest complaint is that it's not very comfortable at all to hold while you're lying in bed. The little indention works great when you're sitting down or standing up, but lying in bed, it puts a lot of pressure on your thumb and fingers and i'm constantly having to readjust it which i've never had a problem with on my old e-readers. . One thing i did that's helped a lot is i got a "popsocket" like people use for their cellphones for it and it helps reading in bed a lot. I see that they also sell some straps that would probably work also. You definitely need something for it if you usually read in bed. -Notice from O. Ophelia, Minnesota

for the 2017 kindle oasis the answer seems to be yes-here s why-. . One of the first things you notice, after the size increase, is the total look and feel of quality:. Refined aluminum outer shell that will resist scratches. Page turn buttons-similar to the last oasis version. Well balanced when in the hand. The lighting seems to be the best that the kindle team has put forward yet- it seems they have taken prior criticism to heart and made a focus on making the lighting as flawless as possible. Overall fit and finish-this thing looks and feels refined. You get the same sense of quality you get when you pick up an ipad (whether you like apple or not). Faster page turns. . Lighting/ screen quality:. Online store must have taken poor reviews on some other models to heart and focused on eliminating these issues. Now with 12 led bulbs, the lighting is more uniform than any prior unit. Far better than the paperwhite (while decent for the money- the oasis is far better). I would rank the voyage as having a more even screen than my 2016 oasis-the 2017 oasis has the best screen yet). The screen has a warmer hue than the paperwhite, voyage or oasis 1. No visible light cones. 7 screen displays more text for less page flips. Graphics look better-small print displayed better. Inverted white/ black option is nice change that displays less light. Good for some that read in bed with partners. The kindle team set the reading plane lower in the device(the glass is thicker) the eliminate light cones. The addition of 2 more led units makes for the most even lighting possible. A one inch screen size really makes a difference in the reading experience-i stopped reading on my old oasis and voyage after getting this unit. Absolutely flawless! while the other kindles are fine, when you put them side by side with the oasis. No comparison. Oasis wins! . . Font boldness control, size options and black /white color conversion. Kindle added more font sizes and boldness control-great for all readers-available on software update on other readers. Black /white inversion is a neat new reading option-exclusive on the oasis. . For the visually challenged:. This is the device for you. Large fonts look more normal on this larger screen. Less page flips-really noticeable on larger fonts. Bold font options . About time! . White /black color inversion option. Great for nighttime readers with a partner. . Magazines:. This is an area that many will overlook. Magazines look better on a 7 screen than 6 . . Weight. At 194 grams it is slightly lighter than the paperwhite at 205grams and slightly heavier than the voyage. In reality you can hardly feel the difference. It is however, significantly heavier than the prior oasis model without the cove that only weighed 131 grams. . Page turn buttons:. Similar to last year s model. Much better than the voyage- you can easily feel these, even in the dark. A slight click when the buttons are pushed leaves no doubt that the page will turn. These buttons really make it easy to stay focused on reading-no need to swipe the page, just klick the button. Once you get used to the buttons it is hard to go back to a paperwhite. . Asymmetrical design:. Very similar to last year s model; they expanded the gripping area on the bezel to allow for wider thumbs that don t overlap the screen while in use. One the voyage, my thumb is half on, half off the device when in use. The screen and button function auto flip when you change hands. Well balanced and secure in the hand while holding. . Storage:. 8 gigs is plenty for most ebook readers, however if you plan to use audible or have a large library consider paying $30 more for the 32gig model(about 27 gigs in actual use). Graphic and image heavy books can exceed 200 mg in size examples are manga, comics, cookbooks, magazines and how to books. My library has a little over 2000 items and does not totally fit on any other kindle device-no problem on a 32 gig oasis! . . Audible:. Seamless switching from reading to audible if you own the e-book and the audible version. They offer a 32 gig option for 30 dollars more if you plan on storing a lot of audible books. This device does not have speakers. You need to pair it with blue tooth speakers or headphones. Please note there is no text to speech. No e-reader on the market has this. Online store e-book/audible ecosystem:. Simply the most extensive e-book store on the planet. Almost always the lowest price. Audible offers membership specials that can save you money. Kindle unlimited -a exclusive option that seems to be best for inexpensive fiction books. . Waterproofing:. I tried this just to make sure it works good addition. Battery:. Seems to last about the same as the voyage and charges in under 2 hours. Optional cover:. Solid protection for the device. The origami style stand is ok-not great. Consider getting a small tablet stand(online store carries a multitude of these). Portability:. Definitely not a pocket device. Quality:. 10 out of 10! simply the best. . Cost:. Online store does not need to apologize for cost on this one-sure it is twice the price of the paperwhite (and that is a fine choice in it s price range) but simply put this is the best kindle unit online store has made to date. For $50 dollars more than the voyage you get a bigger screen, more storage, audible, page turn buttons, brighter screen and better display of graphics and magazines. $40 less than 2016 s unit. Upgrade options:. $20 to remove adds. I did to stop seeing adds and having to swipe the device to unlock it. I read a lot and would rather see the regular screen savers. I included a photo. $30 for 32 gig storage i opted for this because i have a huge e-book and audible library. 44. 99 or 59. 99 -honestly i can t recommend this-the magnets are not super secure-they hold ok. 6/10 from me. 4g- in this day and age many of us have wi-fi available-just store all of your books on the device. I passed on this expense. . Pros:. Best display. Great for large font users. No compromises-high quality. Vast storage options. Audible. Page turn buttons. White /black inversion option. Like all kindles you get online store s vast ebook ecosystem-titles you will not find elsewhere. . Cons:. Portability-this device does not fit most shirt or pants pockets. Cost-still $40 less than last year s oasis. . In short the oasis is better-not just bigger. . Update:. . After spending more time with the unit, i would give this device 10 out of 10 for the right user. I have owned every unit since the kindle keyboard and the oasis 2 is by far the best. I stopped using my other devices after getting the oasis-it is that much more enjoyable to read on. Let s take a look at who this device is for:. . Don t buy if:. You want an e-reader that easily fits in your pocket-get the paperwhite or voyage. You are looking for text to speech. None of the current e-readers offer this. I see poor reviews for the device because it does not have this. No current e-reader does. Budget is a priority. The paperwhite is a fine budget friendly option. . Do buy if:. You want the finest e-reader available. This kindle has the reading plane set below thicker glass to eliminate most of the light cones previous models occasionally had. The lighting is phenomenal. Page turn buttons make a difference. You want a larger reading screen that feels more like a book. E-reading immersion at it s best. A visually challenged reader that uses larger fonts. You need more storage. . If you can swing it -buy it-it does not get better than this

All-new-kindle-oasis-reader-built-(53-006476) set picture

- F. AdrienneI jumped into the world of e-readers several years ago when online store released the first generation of kindle paperwhite. At that time, i was reluctant to make the transition from physical books to books on an electronic device. I'm no luddite and my hesitation had more to do with the fact that there are aspects of physical books that i didn't think an e-reader could replicate: the act of turning a page, the texture of the pages, the continual reminder of your progress as you see one side of the book getting thinner and thinner. The paperwhite turned out to be a good device even if it did not convert me to a die-hard kindle devotee. . What the paperwhite could not accomplish those years ago, the new kindle oasis has. From the very first moment of placing the device in your hands, you can sense how much care went into making it feel comfortable and well-proportioned. One of my biggest issues with the paperwhite was the thin bezel around the screen and how uncomfortable it could be to hold it for long periods of time (even with the online store designed leather cover). The oasis adopts something of an asymmetrical design, with one side having more real estate than the other. This additional space makes it far more comfortable to hold the oasis. The added room also allows for physical buttons, which are also a welcome addition. Tapping or swiping to turn pages never felt natural to me and the ability to click a button to either go forward or backward oddly allows me to read faster. The last thing that i'll compliment is the oasis's screen. It is no longer recessed and thus the screen is no longer a repository of dust around the edges. As to the quality of the display, the text is crisp and the refresh time when you flip a page is very low. . Obviously, i'm quite fond of the oasis. However, i know the price point is a bit high for many and i won't deny that its something of a luxury purchase. Most people are probably better served to go with a paperwhite or a kindle voyage as both do the same things the oasis does. Even if they don't do those things quite as well, the gap between the devices are likely not so significant as to be too much of an issue. At the end of the day, the oasis may be best for those of us who can't really keep ourselves from diving into the newest thing even if something else would be equally effective. The oasis is a gorgeous e-reader that feels great in the hand and makes me want to slip away to have more time to read. Does that justify the price point? that's up to you. What i do know, however, is that nobody who takes the plunge in getting an oasis will regret the experience they get.

I'll save the lengthy review, there's enough of them. Instead, offering a kindle pro tip for those that complain of the weight. I went from paperwhite 2016 to this oasis model, and i appreciate the aluminum backing's durability and style so it being a few ounces more is not an issue. Pro tip: with the latest updates you can now change the orientation of the page, to landscape mode. This allows you to hold the oasis with the thicker spine being along the bottom offering a nice evenly distributed and comfortable reading position while in bed or awkward angles. I now read like this most of the time. Follow the pictures to see how to get there in the page settings. Enjoy you bibliophiles you.

The F.A.Q. for Kindle Voyage 6 Inch 4gb Ereader (53 002680)

We have a handful of kindle fires in my house, but i've always been an ipad girl. I use the kindle app on my ipad and love it. Since i travel a lot for work, it's a huge help for me to have books available electronically. I always carry a book in my purse or backpack. Frequently i'm exploring cities alone, so i need something to read during dinner or downtime. I thought i'd try a kindle reader because it'd be easier to slip in a coat pocket than my ipad. I don't need to duplicate the internet capability as i have that on my phone and tablet. I'm so, so happy with my voyage! i wasn't really aware that it'd be as small and thin as it is. I got the distressed leather case and i adore it as well. The stand works well, the leather is really attractive and it's slim and light. The settings on the voyage let me really customize my reading experience the way i like it. You can easily hold it in either hand and flip pages. I've only just received it so i don't have direct experience with the battery life, so taking that on faith, but it seems pretty accurate. The screen is easy to read in all the lights i've tried. The voyage is simple and intuitive to use. I did look through the short manual and that was worthwhile to find out about all the settings, some of which i wasn't aware. I don't like tech with a steep learning curve, so this suits me well. I love my voyage and highly recommend it! also love the premium leather case, for looks as well as function.

Since other people have gone into detail on the device, i will answer only the burning questions i had before i received mine. I was very happy with my paperwhite and would not have bought this had mine not been stolen/lost (not sure which). My husband still has his paperwhite, so i was able to compare them side by side. . Can i use the wall charger from my paperwhite to charge the voyage? . . Yes. . Can pressing the page turners cause repetitive use issues? . . I don't think so. You can turn down the pressure it needs (which is very slight) or you can turn it off completely and turn pages with a tap. It's actually nice to have both options. . Can you see where to turn the pages in the dark? . . No. You can guess where the page forward area is, but the page back is a dot, so guessing would be difficult. But you can still tap to turn pages. Using a cover helps, as the edge of the cover would be right over the dot. . Does the feedback buzz annoy you when you turn pages? . . I think it does take a little getting used to, but you can turn it down, and i think i will not notice it after a while. (there's no sound; it's purely tactile. ) months later: it's not distracting; you forget about it. . . Is the adjustable light nice? . . I still do it manually. It doesn't adjust the way i'd like it to. Not as bright in good light as i'd like, and not as dim while my husband is sleeping next to me. Note that if you want to use the "night light, " you have to set that separately from auto adjust. Settings/device options/screen light. I'm not actually sure that the night light is working. It was at 18 when i turned off the light (this is quite bright), and i checked it about 10 minutes later, and it was at 17. My eyes adjust a lot faster than that. I turned it down manually to about 7. . Can i use the cover/case from my paperwhite for the voyage? . . I had a fintie, and i tried it. The entire reading area was still completely visible, but there was about 1/4" of extra space above and i couldn't access the power button. You need to access the power button in the back to wake it out of screen saver mode, and you'd have to take it out of the cover to do that. It would protect it, though, in a suitcase while you're traveling. I ended up buying another fintie for the voyage and i'm very happy with it. . Is the crispness of the text and whiteness of the background better than the paperwhite? . . When i originally wrote this review it was. But online store recently upgraded the paperwhite and the newest version now has the same screen resolution as the voyage. Although i don't have the two of them to compare (my husband has the earlier version paperwhite), i understand that the text on the voyage is still a tad crisper and clearer. See the update in my conclusion below. . Any issues? . . I do not have any of the page hue issues that others have. The screen is uniformly white. . At first, i was having a problem with the page turners being located at just the spot where i like to hold the device. It took a while to find a comfortable way to hold it consistently. My thumb kept wanting to move to that spot, causing me to inadvertently change pages. Using a cover helps. . Books in the public domain and a couple of tips. . There is a way to easily download public domain books from project gutenberg on your kindle by using the experimental browser. Open the browser on your kindle (in the main menu) and type in the url: this will open a link to what's known as the magic catalog. When you have downloaded the catalog, it will appear on your home page and will look like a book. When you open it, you will see it is a listing of all the books in project gutenberg, and all these books are linked to their website. You can search for something (like, say, peter pan), and download it from the catalog right onto your device without having to connect to a computer. Very nifty. This can be done on any kindle, not just the voyage. Be sure to use the domain name org, not com. Freekindlebooks. Com is something completely different. . You can also download books from the mobile site: m. Gutenberg. Org. But you would have to open the browser each time, as opposed to the magic catalog, where the links are already there. . Tips:. . Know that you can turn off the public notes and highlights that appear in your book, and you can also turn off the "recommended content" that appears on the bottom of your home page. . Conclusion:. . If you are happy with your paperwhite, i would recommend sticking with it. Only buy the voyage if you have money to throw around and like buying all the latest gadgets. The voyage is fabulous, but the paperwhite is perfectly fine. If you have a keyboard kindle, the paperwhite is much better than what you have in terms of clarity, brightness and readability. Update 7/9/15. There is a new paperwhite. It has the same screen resolution as the voyage, but the voyage text is still a bit more clear and crisp. The main differences between them are that the voyage has the page turns on the bezel (with the paperwhite you have to tap the screen), and the voyage is thinner. The voyage's screen is flush with the bezel and is made from a kind of glass rather than plastic. The new paperwhite is $119 vs. $199 for the voyage. . . Leave me a comment if you need further instructions on anything.

Best kindle voyage 6 inch 4gb ereader (53 002680) in review

If you're a dedicated reader and have a voracious appetite for good books then the upgrade to a kindle voyage is worth it and more! . . I was coming from a second generation kindle paperwhite which i loved, but the increased resolution, thinner and lighter design, high-quality construction, edge-to-edge glass, and ambient light sensor were all reasons i upgraded. Just further perfects the reading experience. The nightlight and ambient light sensor are very welcome additions so that i don't have to constantly adjust the brightness myself any longer. . One thing to note is the light sensor is in the upper left-hand corner of the frame on the voyage. Be careful to not cover this with a finger or thumb or you will notice your screen darken even in a bright environment. Can be a minor annoyance if you're not aware of this, but very easy to avoid once you know it's there. . I went with the wifi only, special offers version and unless you don't have broadband (and a wireless network) at your home or if you don't frequent businesses or establishments which also offer free wifi there is no reason to get the 3g version. With most tablets or phones being able to become hotspots these days you can always use your phone or tablet as a wifi hotspot if you need to download some new books in a pinch. Save yourself some money and forego the 3g model. Also, save yourself some initial money and go with the special offers version. If you get tired of the adds you can always pay online store a one-time fee down the road to get rid of them. I did this on my last kindle, but think i won't do it on this one. I actually like some of the offers and they're very unobtrusive. They only appear on the "sleep" screen and on the initial home screen. This is the way to do an ad-supported device right. . All-in-all i'm wicked satisfied with the voyage and if you're like me, you may own tablets, laptops, smart phones, etc. And i also still collect first edition hard-cover books, but for reading every day and ultimate portability nothing beats the pure reading experience like this kindle. Very little fatigue reading this in bed and i just love that it's such a simple and seamless experience. . Yes, it's way more money than any kindle before, but it's way more of a refined and high-quality product. The care is magnesium, the edge-to-edge glass is micro-etched to reduce glare. It's very "apple" like in its attention to detail, material quality, and design. Which i think is a huge compliment! online store has to be losing on every one they sell hoping to recoup through ebook sales because the engineering and material costs alone would be way more than just $199. It was expensive internals and materials. If you're on the fence, get this kindle! it's worth the upgrade and if you're a first-timer to the kindle family and a dedicated book enthusiast and reader you won't be disappointed.

S. Cathy, Sandwell says

I purchased the kindle paperwhite when it first came out in 2013. I had owned a previous generation of kindle with the physical buttons but no back-light, and had issues reading in a dim room, or poor lighting. That was a frustrating i lived with, not knowing there was any real options. So when the paperwhite came out with the self illuminating feature, i immediately purchased it. It has been my faithful companion ever since. Even when the voyage first came out, i didn't feel the need to upgrade. So in terms of longevity, i give the kindle line 5 very satisfied stars! . . Recently i had the chance to compare the paperwhite side by side with the voyage. The voyage's text clarify is hands down better even though both - the newest version of the paperwhite and the voyage - are 300 ppi. Now that i have a voyage, i don't think i can go back to the paperwhite. The ease on my eyes can't be stressed enough. 5 stars! . . However, i must take one point off because of two things:. 1. The backlight isn't completely even. The first kindle voyage i received had very dramatic pink patch along the top of the reader (this reminds me of the first gen paperwhite). I have just received my replacement from online store. It's much better now, although the top part is still slightly darker than the bottom. I don't think any other manufactured model at this first gen will be any different at this point. 2. The replacement kindle i received has a noticeable defect with the pagepress button on one side. On the right hand side, the long strip designated for turning forward a page isn't so designated. I noticed while reading that if my thumb is pressing close to the top 1/3, it actually turns the page back instead. . I would request for a replacement, but i'm worried that the new replacement might have worse screen illumination. And to me, that's more important than the pagepress button. Since i can't give this product my full confidence in quality, i'm going to have to take that full point off. . But in terms of online store customer service, i would give 5 stars also. I consider this an important but often over looked fact about a product. I feel confident that if i am unsatisfied in anyway with the purchase, a replacement will be processed. . Over all, i love reading on my voyage, and i think it's the best ereader out there at this moment. . -. . Update: 7/12/2016. . For those who are price conscious, here are some recommendations:. 1. Purchase your kindle during one of their sales. With the voyage, you can expect a $50 discount. 2. If you have an older generation kindle you are upgrading from, consider trading-in. Even if it's not functioning anymore, online store will pay some money for it. My working 5th gen kindle (the 1st gen paperwhite) was trade-in for $33. Online store also offers an additional $20 credit to be applied to your new kindle purchase. . If you combine all those, you are looking at purchasing a kindle voyage for less than you would pay for a paperwhite, even on sale for $99. 99

Before this i had the first generation paperwhite, and before that, the kindle keyboard. This improves on them both significantly and it's without a doubt the best ereader on the market (the only real competition is the kobo aura hd and h20), but the pricing compared to the second generation paperwhite doesn't really justify that. But more on that later. . The voyage finally makes the screen flush with the bezel, something that makes it so much more pleasing to use, especially when you're adding a bookmark by tapping the upper right hand corner. The glass is matte and non-reflective (so much so that it honestly looks and feels like plastic). The page turn buttons work well, however they do take a bit of getting used to and having some form of tactile guide for them would be great; it's hard to tell where they are in the dark or just by touch alone. Definitely not as good as real physical buttons, but better than none at all. . The screen is fantastic; the backlight is amazingly uniform and the text is insanely crisp. Also, the light sensor is genuinely useful and great at auto-adjusting the backlight (it's also tweakable by adjusting the backlight while the auto box is checked). Furthermore, performance on the voyage is night and day compared to the first generation paperwhite i had prior to it. It's snappy and works quickly. . Now the bad part. The performance on this, though markedly improved, is not that much different from the second generation paperwhite. And though the screen is noticeably better, the first and second generation paperwhites both already had more than adequate screens in terms of backlighting, crispness, and readibility. Not only that, but the voyage has the same ui as the paperwhites with the exact same features; it brings nothing new to the table in that regard. The real problem with the device is that it faces so much competition from online store's own lineup. These features are mostly just iterative improvements to already excellent devices and the voyage has no real standout killer feature to differentiate itself from its predecessors. It does offer a better reading experience, but not $100 better. You could buy two second generation kindle paperwhites with the money you spend on one of these and had this not been a gift, i think i ultimately would have ended up returning this and kept my paperwhite till the next generation of devices. It was an over exaggeration but not far from the truth when i told my friend that i basically paid $200 dollars for page turn buttons and a light sensor compared to my paperwhite . . To that end, i'm giving the device 5 stars because it truly deserves that. It's an excellent device that's great to look at and use. But in terms of value. It's just not worth such a large premium over the paperwhite. Had this been $140 or some other more reasonable price, it would be an entirely different story. My advice to you is to get the second generation paperwhite or keep your current one and wait for the next generation of kindles. Or at the least, wait till this goes down significantly in price.

Love the size, weight, and clarity of my kindle voyage. Hate the advertisement screen saver. Liked my paperwhite screen saver with the pencils, pens, and other writing implements. When asking the sales person about how to get rid of the unwanted advertisements, he said i should have bought the most expensive kindle - i did - with no special offers! that surprised him. Went on line and found this has been an ongoing complaint. Seems the sales person should have known, and kindle should have fixed it by now.

E. Lynette, California

This review is for those trying to choose between the two more advanced kindle offerings. . I love my kindle voyage. I love it so much i asked for the upgrade for christmas. I received it. I am now the proud owner of a 32g oasis 2nd gen, and i love that too, but not as much. I'm writing this review now, because the flaws in the oasis 2 have shown me just how perfect the voyage is as an ereader. . They have the same ppi, but i'm pretty sure the voyage is clearer. The voyage definitely has a whiter background. I set them to the same lighting level of 10 and set them side by side in front of a window. The oasis 2 is more yellow. It took an increase in the light settings of 3 levels to achieve the same look on the oasis 2. . The devices also have practical differences. The voyage is symmetrical. There are page press buttons on both sides, so switching hands while reading one handed is no big deal. To do the same on the oasis 2 or oasis 1 for that matter requires you to flip the device. No big deal, except that you have to relocate your spot on the page. I suppose i could just wait to switch hands until i'm done with the page, but the voyage does not make me strategize in order to read. The experience with cases is also different. I have aftermarket cases on both devices. The case on the voyage makes it easier to hold. It's just too thin for my male hands without it, women's experience may vary. The oasis 2 however feels twice as heavy once the case is on. I suspect it has something to do with the odd shape or just how wide it is, so i usually end up transporting it in the case but removing it to read. Without a case it feels like you're holding perfection though. I'm awed by how good it feels in my hands. I never get that feeling from holding the voyage case on or not. Without the case the oasis 2 actually feels lighter than the voyage, a nice balancing trick that is pretty impressive. Don't worry about the weight though. The voyage is extremely light. . So in closing if you are trying to decide between these two devices, the oasis is only worth the additional cost if. 1. You want the 7" screen. 2. You want to listen to audiobooks on your ereader. 3. You really like physical buttons. . If none of the above apply to you, then you're actually better off getting the voyage.

X. Nellie, Australian Capital Territory says

The voyage is a huge improvement in both clarity of text and conformity of screen lighting over the first generation paperwhite. That being said, it is certainly not perfect. At this point, i am convinced that there is not a kindle voyage that does not have some level of the yellow gradient lighting toward the top of the screen, but i will certainly take that over the splotchy pink, blue, and green hued shadows that plagued the first generation paperwhite. The attached photos show a comparison between the voyage (left) and first generation paperwhite (right), as well as two solo shots of the voyage, one in a well lit room and one in a dark room. I think the camera slightly exaggerates the yellow gradient, but it is definitely visible in person. I also took the voyage/paperwhite comparison photos in a relatively low light environment, which makes both the yellow of the voyage and splotchiness of the paperwhite more apparent. At this point i think my eyes have adjusted to the gradual whitening of the screen, but if i flip the voyage upside down the gradient is very noticeable. I have considered an exchange, but i went through that with my paperwhite and ultimately ended up sticking with the original.

Having owned an ipad (still do, don't get me wrong), for the longest time i resisted the kindle. Mostly because there's already a kindle app for the ipad so why have essentially two of the same thing. But here's the thing: yes the ipad has a kindle app. It also has a lot of other apps. This means that distraction is guaranteed. You start on a book and if you're like me, then it won't be two minutes before a notification pops up or you think of something, which leads to something else which leads to a different app and boom you've completely forgotten about settling down to read a book. Once i got my kindle, i actually found myself at times feeling that urge to "check" something else on my phone or computer, and actually resisted it, continuing on with my book instead. So on that note, congrats kindle, you got me reading published books again. . Separately, on a technical side, the voyage ended up being my choice after comparing the three available for a little while. I nixed the fire right off the bat because that one is pretty much an ipad - we'd be back at square one with all the distractions. It really was down to the all-new kindle paperwhite, 6" high-resolution display (300 ppi) with built-in light, wi-fi - includes special offers and voyage. At the time the new version of the paperwhite hadn't come out yet so that was a mark agains it. But really the things that clinched it was it's weight, with it being the lighter one, and the pagepress feature, allowing me to either tap the screen to change the page or to squeeze the side button which was on either side. Physically it's smaller than an ipad mini and i hardly feel it in my hand. The only thing i would slightly complain about is the claim that it has weeks of battery life. I was able to drain the battery down to warning me of low battery after 3-4 days of almost constant reading, with wifi off. It's much longer than an ipad by a lot but weeks? only if you don't constantly (yes i am accounting for having to eat and sleep) use it i think. . Otherwise, what was initially an experimental buy, with intention of returning it before the 14 days, became a constant item in either my bag or by back pocket - yes it fits, though depends on the pants.

Y. Lisa, Luton says

Tl; dr - it's a great device, well made and totally worth it. . For those of you who have looked at my history - which you can, but it's mostly boring - you may notice a pattern in my reviews of online store's recent waves of devices: negative. This changes all that. Yes, i haven't liked an online store product produced since the end of 2014 (ending with the nice fire hdx 8. 9 4th gen), and this product does not end that streak, but it's still a great buy and i'm satisfied with my purchase, even at the original $199 price point for the wi-fi only device. . My previous kindle ownership: kindle 3rd gen, and kindle paperwhite 6th gen. . Not great bona-fides, but not non-existent, either. Let's start with the q-and-a. . Q. What's so great about it? . . Four reasons:. . A. First, let's talk pixel density. This has 300ppi, and at that density, i cannot distinguish individual pixels, like i can on the fire hd 8 or the regular kindle e-reader. Big plus for me there, as i find it somewhat distracting to read with pixels and has been long one of the things that has held me back from recommending e-readers to the general reading public. Not for this. At 300ppi, the text is crisp and clear at all sizes and styles. It's an improvement over the 6th gen paperwhite by a wide margin (though the text there was also good at 212 ppi, it is even better on the voyage). . Second, we're talking page turning. The haptics are absolutely wonderful. It's like online store knew that i did not like having to move my hand every time i wanted to turn the page. It makes it a lot easier to read in bed, since i do not have to bring in that cold outside air every time i finish a page. There is a drawback to reading in bed with the voyage haptics, because there is no tactile sensation to discern where the pressure sensor is, i do find that my hand may have moved up or down. It's not a huge drawback, i simply just slide my hand back to where i need to, but it does happen every so often. Not nearly as annoying as having to move my hand, though. . Third, we're talking backlighting. Yes, i had the paperwhite, which had the same feature. It's just improved in the voyage. The lighting on the paperwhite felt like it came from a particular source and i felt like there were times when i had to change the screen brightness in order to see text in a particular location (top, if i remember correctly. It's been a while, ok? ). Not so on the voyage! i read in the dark and i can turn the brightness down to the lowest level and feel like the screen is uniformly lit. Much better than the paperwhite. . Lastly, we're talking size. I was reading on that paperwhite, but i got annoyed (as i always do) and turned to the fire hdx 8. 9 4th gen to read at night. White text on black background did well, but the screen was too big. Also too tempted to surf the internet, which is not helpful to get to sleep. The voyage felt too small to begin with, after using a tablet of that size, but it has quickly become much nicer. I think the ideal size would be right around what the fire hd 8 has in terms of screen size for reading, but the voyage is close. It is light and does not strain my eyes. I fall asleep when i need and don't have a complaint against the weight, screen size or construction. . Q. Who would you recommend this to? . . A. This is the type of e-reader that i would recommend to anyone who says, without every trying an e-reader "i prefer a book". I am confident that, if they spend three weeks with this to read, they will change their mind. . Q. What would you like to see out of the next generation? ie, what can be improved? . . A. Two things: 1. Larger screen, maybe 7. 5-8 in. 2. Separate tactile sensations to differentiate where the next and previous page pressure sensors are. That's it. . Q. Does it play audiobooks? . . A. No. That's what tablets are for. . Q: how's the battery life? . . A. Pretty good. About what online store says, actually, which is some 20 hours of reading between charging. I get more because i keep the light at a lower setting, but it's not terribly significant, and i haven't had it long enough to drain the battery twice. . Q. Will i lose my books if i get a new e-reader? . . A. Only if it's from another manufacturer or you did not purchase the book from online store. Online store backs up every kindle book purchase in the cloud and you will only have to download them to the voyage. It's easy and you might even keep your place if you sync before you reset your old e-reader. If you have a nook or another non-online store e-reader, though, then the answer is probably not. If you're coming from online store, then yes. . Q. You didn't mention the adaptive light sensor. Why not? . . A. Because i haven't used it. It's a great idea, but i already keep my light low. If it works as explained on the voyage page, then it's a definitive advantage over the paperwhite. . Q. Speaking of the paperwhite, would you recommend the voyage over the paperwhite? . . A. Tentatively yes. I haven't used the new generation, so i cannot definitively say that the voyage is miles better, but it does have the following advantages: 1. Pressure based page turns to read without moving your hand. 2. Less mass. 3. Adaptive light sensor, which i list last here for the fact that i haven't used it. If the lighting hasn't changed on the paperwhite, then the voyage has yet another advantage. Is it worth $80 more? for someone frugal, no. For someone who doesn't want to replace their e-reader in a couple years, then yes. I think it's worthwhile investment to spend the $80 now for a device that i expect will remain used for the next few years over the paperwhite, of which i do not hold the same expectation. Perhaps that's because i traded in my paperwhite to purchase the voyage. I do not intend to replace this device for a good, long time. . Q. This is a pretty glowing review, particularly compared to the other online store products you've reviewed lately. Are you being paid? . . A. No. It's a glowing review because it deserves a glowing review. . Q. So, there's nothing that you hate about it? . . A. I actually spent several hours, prior to writing this review, to figuring out something about the voyage that i hate. The answer is: the experimental browser. It's stupid. Also, docking a review a star for that would be idiotic. Honestly, if you read the voyage page on online store to see what it can do and what they say about it, it's pretty much correct (unlike the fire hd 8, i might add. Hate that device. ). . Final thoughts:. . It's a great, well made e-reader. Fully deserving of honors and only has nitpicky deficiencies, but those we already know: (it's 6", and black and white, and the haptics have no tactile separator. ) for what it is and what it does, it's absolutely phenomenal, and i finally get to say, well done, online store, even if this was released in 2014.

I debated for a while whether to get the paperwhite or the voyage and decided on the voyage for a few reasons:. - i like the haptic press buttons to turn pages (and you can turn back and forwards). - the one-piece front means no dirt/sand/dust can get trapped in between the screen and the frame, as it can on the paperwhite. - the reviews talked about how clear the text was on the voyage. I find all of these things to be great advantages in using the voyage. My mother's paperwhite is not quite as clear as my voyage, and i do appreciate the difference (although i'm not sure i would have cared had i never seen the difference). I do have one complaint: i like to see the page numbers rather than the minutes left in chapter/book or the location. The voyage is far less responsive to clicks at the bottom of the page to change what is displayed there than the paperwhite is. I'm not sure whether this is just mine or whether they're all like this, but i often have a hard time getting the voyage to change what it displays in the bottom left corner. I would also really like online store to provide page numbers in all books - i had a barnes & noble nook before and that always showed page numbers. This is a complaint for online store, though, and not about the voyage specifically. Overall, the voyage is an excellent, easy to use e-reader and i am loving it.

I only write reviews that i feel strongly about, 1 or 5 stars. I love the voyage. I used to have one of the first generation kindles and fell out of love with it and went back to paper books. I got discouraged though, lugging books around and constantly stressing about not having a book for a plane ride or a vacation. The newer kindles looked like big steps up to me! i spent days agonizing over the paperwhite vs the voyage and looked at both in a box store. I also struggled with waiting for the oasis, but i was not interested in the battery in the cover setup or the push buttons that stick out. I finally went with the voyage and could not be happier. But i had to buy two voyages to get there. The first voyage i bought at the box store because i did not want to wait for online store - i was to excited. Turns out they said it had been sitting around for years and when i got home it was yellow on the top and blue on the bottom -the blue gave me a headache. I returned it and figured i would order from online store because it would be the latest device of the optimized manufacturing line - it is perfect from online store, be weary of the box stores. I recommend buying only from online store because online store turns over their devices more than the box store and since most of us love online store, we may as well support them. . I think the voyage is worth the extra money. First, how can you justify that the 2x cost of the paperweight is not worth it if you read thousands of hours - thousands of hours at the movies would cost you many kindles in comparison. Plus i'm a neuroscientist and believe that reading is good for memory and may help reduce cognitive decline in aging , so there what's a $100 in that context! reading is good for the brain, don't skimp on it the tools that help you read. . The voyage felt better. It is lighter and more comfortable and is way sleeker. The touch buttons are way to cool and though you don't need them, when you are laying just right and don't want to move your hand, they make a huge difference in the experience. I also paid $20 to get rid of the advertising - i have to comment that i think it's pretty sleazy for online store to hold us hostage with advertising, but i get it, they are running a business and online store supports my lifestyle so no big deal, but the executive that came up with this idea, well no comment on how i feel about his morals. . Now, one more comment. I have huge hands, i can palm a basket ball. The voyage is not to small for me, but it is hard for me to hold it with one hand with my thumb over the buttons. Not the voyages fault, i just have paddles for hands. I discovered that for one handed holding for big handed people, a case, any case, makes a big difference. With the case i can place the flap between my pointer and middle fingers and hold the voyage quite easily with one hand and it feels more like a book this way too. A good excuse for a case, but if that's not enough of a reason, it auto turns the device on and off, which is great. I know it doesn't sound like much, but not having to press the power button is a nice convenience. Not to mention a case protects the voyage. . So there you have it, if you are deciding between the voyage and paperwhite and have some extra dough, i would say you will be a lot happier with the voyage. That said, you will be super happy with the paperwhite. I have no seen the oasis, so i cannot really make a comparison there. . I also have a subscription to the kindle library, that is a great, i have more than 12 books i want to read on it in the first year, so it should pay for itself. It's free for a month, so check it out. . I would give the voyage 5 thumbs up if i had that many thumbs, so today we can settle for 5 stars!

I started with a paperwhite, and very much liked it. I opted to check out a voyage when they went on sale mostly for pagepress. I have seen all the current gen kindle models, and imo, voyage is the best of the group. . Page press is awesome. Give yourself about 30 minutes of reading to get a feel for it and it becomes second nature. You won't realize how obnoxious tap-to-turn is until you don't have to it anymore. Page press is worth it. I never want another kindle without it. . The adaptive light sensor is very smart, and gets it right about 80% of the time. This isn't something i thought i'd care about, since it's a feature i disable on my phone & tablet since i find it aggravating, but the voyage has it right. . The difference in weight and size is slight, but in my opinion, noticeable. The voyage sits better in the hand than the paperwhite. Because there are page press buttons on both sides of the screen, you can easily tap back and forth regardless of whatever hand you're using to hold it, instead of having to use 2 hands to tap backwards, or stretch your thumb across the screen. There is no disruption to your reading. It's one of those things that, again, you don't realize how obnoxious tapping is until you don't have to do it anymore. . The extra 2 leds and smooth glass front are a huge improvement over the paperwhite screen, which i was not expecting. . While it's surprising, i'd say the voyage is easily worth the price hike over the workhorse paperwhite, and clearly superior to the oasis as well.

I was on the fence about purchasing the kindle voyage, then saw it on display at a local retailer and was struck by how gorgeous the screen was. After playing around with it a little at the store, i decided to get one. I like that the screen is a single piece of slightly textured glass, and i like the way the text seems to be at the surface of the glass, not beneath it. The higher dpi of the display is noticeably smoother and has better contrast to previous kindles and the return of the page turn buttons on the bezel is a nice addition, although i have enormous hands and don't really use them. All in all, i really like the device. I just have one issue which i hope online store will address in the near future. . It's time for a larger screen! . . I'm not talking some 10 inch monstrosity like the dx, just a slightly taller, slightly wider screen. Say 7" or 8". The kindle in all it's iterations has always, for me, felt a little cramped in the screen real estate department. Almost toy-like. I've always felt like i am constantly turning the page, turning the page, turning the page. Hopefully, online store will see the error of their ways and introduce a premium, voyage-like reader with a 7 or 8 inch display. I know it would be an instant buy for me. If you agree with me about this, like my review, or leave a comment. I am curious just how many other readers out there think the kindle's screen is just a tad too little. . They could call it the kindle voyage xl or something. . I would give this device 5 stars but to me the bezels are just a little too narrow, making it difficult for me to hold in my adult male size hands without obscuring the text or accidentally triggering a page turn. I've ordered a book-like cover for the thing (not the ridiculous flip-top origami cover online store is offering) so hopefully i will be able to handle this thing a little more comfortably with a cover to hold onto. . Sometimes, online store, bigger is better. The decreased weight doesn't really help when you've got to pinch the narrow bezel between your thumb and index finger to hold it. Maybe it's perfect for the average size person, but for me the ergonomics of the device is just slightly off.

I will start by saying that this is my first kindle. I am avid lover of an actual book and the story it's physical existence carries. Worn pages, cracked bindings, coffee stains. The condition of the book tells its own story. I also like the fact that it isn't a computer and my eyes can rest. . With the voyage my reading experience has been enhanced. The clarity of the screen, compact size and weight, lighting and page turn updates from previous kindles delivers the experience i have been waiting for. It makes reading easier and in odd lighting situations, less exhausting on my eyes. The look of the screen (aside from the clarity) delivers a real paper page look and feel, making my transition easier. Couple all this with the standard features the kindle line has delivered and i have everything i had hoped for when moving to an e-reader. . The other feature (which seems very bell & whistle) is the haptic page turn on the side of the voyage. While there are a number of ways to page turn via touching the screen, these buttons (forward/back located on both sides of the voyage) truly make reading an easy endeavor. I ride the bus to work every morning and this allows me to navigate easily with one hand while holding on for dear life. Or when i am eating, i don't have to touch the screen. It may seem trivial, but it definitely adds to the experience. . I am still exploring the features and benefits, but i well into reading shogun and i prefer reading it on my voyage than my severely well traveled soft cover edition. If you have been waiting for the right e-reader to make the jump over or upgrade from your current reader, this is it!

I have the wi-fi only version w/ads and i am very happy with this device. This is my 2nd kindle, with my first being the base version bought 6 months ago. I wanted to be able to read at night with the lights off. It was difficult making the choice between the paperwhite and the voyage until online store had a brief sale a few weeks ago and that made up my mind for me, though if i had waited another week or 2, the newest (2015)paperwhite might have swayed me in that direction. . Pros:. 1) battery lasts for weeks. 2) feels very light, even with the leather case. 3) the leather origami magnetized case i bought on the same order is absolutely beautiful. 4) page turns using the touch screen and the bezel pressure touch work quickly. 5) auto conditioning backlight works well, but manual adjustment, if needed, is easy to reach. 6) the ppi resolution (300) makes reading easy with less eye strain. 7) set up, including wi-fi connecting very easy with no disconnect or other network issues. . Cons:. At $199, the only con i can think of the is price. It's double the price of the current (2015) paperwhite the paperwhite's specs/price/value make it a more difficult purchase decision when comparing the two products. . But no regrets, this is still smaller, lighter, quicker and i've yet to find any hardware. Software issues. I have many devices with the kindle app - android (phone & tablet) plus windows (phone, tablet, and desktop) and this is the best reading device of any i've tried yet. . Disclaimer: i am a normal, everyday consumer. I bought this device on my own. No one paid me for this review, nor has anyone given me the device in exchange for this review.

L. Gina, Saskatchewan says

I bought this in december 2014. I am an avid reader and probably spend 2 to 3 hours a day, every single day reading with it. The auto-sensing backlight is incredible. The origami cover is a must have. I always, always use it folded. Besides the obvious use of it. Sitting on a table in front of you, the folded cover provides a perfect hand hold so i can take my reading glasses off and hold it closer to my eye for reading. This is how i read 80% of the time. The other 19. 99% of the time, i lay in bed on my side and this folded cover will hold the book at a perfect angle, laying on it's side for me to read. I do not have to hold the kindle reading in bed this way. . But as far as the kindle itself goes, the page back and forward buttons, which are really under the front side and not actually buttons, have never given me a problem. Unlike the cheaper model kindles (which i owned prior) with the rocker switches, which eventually failed me and caused me to purchase this kindle. You can certainly, very easily and gently, slide your finger across the page to go back or forward a page at a time as well. But that tends to junk up the screen with smudges, in my case anyway. . When i turn out the night light when reading in bed, the kindle automatically drops the back light down to exactly the right spot. . If you want to clean the screen, turn it off with the cover open, by holding the power button for a few seconds. Then put some windex on a paper towel, and wipe the kindle with the paper towel. Don't spray the kindle with windex, and don't try to clean it while on, or it will interpret your cleaning as a function and do something you are not expecting. . Now, after over 3 years of constant use, the usb charging port is getting a little flaky. I have to wiggle to get a good solid charging connection. It is not the cable itself, it is the usb connector and it's connection to the mother board in the kindle. The kindle does not owe me a dime and i suspect i can get another year out of it before i need to replace it.

. Hakala, Limousin

I am of the "older" generation, and like the feel of a book in my hand as i read. As you can see, i was hesitant to purchase this, but i gave it a try. Boy, was i glad i did. It was very easy to connect to my wifi, and to adjust the settings such as brightness and page turn touch. When you plug it in to charge, there is an amber light at the bottom of the reader that turns green when it is fully charged. I am able to read approximately 3 books before a notice appears to indicate i need to re-charge the reader. You have the option to touch a word for the definition or adjust the settings to automatically give you the definition on various words, so you do not have to keep touching the screen to get the definition. I can read in complete darkness and have no problem seeing the words. This is truly an amazing gadget, and would highly recommend it.

I am an avid reader who swore he would never give up physical books, especially novels. My wife received a paperwhite for christmas last year, which made me curious because of its low-light performance but still was too awkward to handle. I've been using the voyage since christmas (thanks mom) and all of that has now been fixed. Other than periodicals (favorites being wsj and popular mechanics) and heirloom hardback series, i don't expect to ever buy another physical book. The voyage is amazing to handle with fantastic performance in pitch black rooms and sunny outdoors alike. It is, hands-down, the best reading device mankind has ever known. I challenge you to read a 350 page novel for three hours with one hand using any other device, including a physical book. I'm talking pick it up, find your place, and turn pages all with one hand. Nothing comes close to the voyage. Well played kindle, well played.

. Kimberly, Wakefield

I have waited for two months since i purchased my kindle voyage to write this review so that i could provide an accurate assessment. I bought this to replace my kindle paperwhite which i have owned for 3 years. Spoiler: i like the paperwhite better. . There are pros and cons to each of these ebooks not the least of which is that the paperwhite costs less and i find it to be more comfortable to read on. . Pros:. The voyage has a great screen and easy to use settings. It has slightly less weight but not enough to make much of a difference. . Cons:. The. Page press buttons are more of an irritant than a help. If you hold it normally it is easy to accidentally turn the page when you don't intend to. Ease of reading isn't any better than the paperwhite. The screens on both seem to be the same. (which is actually great). The battery doesn't last as long as the paperwhite - don't know why this is. I read several hours a day and get about 3 days before i need to recharge it. They say i should get 3 weeks but that is based on 1/2 hour per day reading time. . Both are good readers but personally i prefer the paperwhite.

I received my kindle voyage yesterday and am in love! for a book blogger who is constantly reading books, this is the best device. I used to complain about my kindle paperwhite because the page turn was so slow and when i wanted to change to a diff page to check information it was frustrating. Not with my new toy! it's fast, the page turn bezel is wonderful, and the image so sharp. I love that it's thinner and lighter and much more comfortable to hold, especially for long hours. This is the best kindle i've had so far. For all readers who spend a lot of time reading like i do, i really recommend this device.

U. Audrey, Suffolk

First of all let me state that i am an avid reader, at least a few hours each day, and it took me a long time to justify the cost of owning a dedicated ereader, more so with purchasing the most expensive one on the market. But, after a few years ereading, starting with the original ipad, then an ipad mini, then a kindle fire, i finally decided to take the plunge and buy a kindle, specifically the voyage with 3g. Why after so many years? i think the increase in resolution and the frustration with compromise during my many hours of reading made the choice ultimately an easy one. . In comparison to the kindle fire:. . It is smaller. I have the 7" hdx, and even that feels incredibly bulky next to the voyage. The resolution is so similar that the eye cannot really discern the difference (323 ppi for the fire vs 300 ppi for the voyage). My one complaint about the fire was that i generally hold the reader with my left hand, making a page turn a two handed evolution. The voyage corrected this shortfall with the pagepress sensors; i can't say enough about how this small change has drastically impacted my reading experience for the better. Another aspect that discouraged me from buying a dedicated ereader was the lack of color; i thought that books looked lifeless and bland. I wanted the cover to show the rich colors of a real book, and that is still lacking in the voyage, but the eink display feels so much more like reading an actual book it more than makes up for this shortfall. While reading, which is 99. 9% of the time, this is not even a factor. . Once the libraries began the digital lending the kindle was a must buy for me, hence the original fire. . Would i make this purchase again? without a doubt; it is my favorite tech purchase of all time and i would give up my phone and tablets before i gave up the voyage. Well done online store!

O. Smith, Northern Territory says

I have 3 kindles and love every one of them. I love how the light adjusts to the lighting in the room. The print is bolder and easier to read and i especially love the size of the kindle voyager. Perfect! keep up the fantastic work, online store! i'm a customer for life!

. Wells, Rhode Island

This will be quite a long review, so hang on. I have read hundreds, close to a thousand, reviews for this product. Both positive and negative and both the new and the refurbished. I am going to address a few of the most frequently mentioned features/issues. First, my personal kindle experience. I started out with a dedicated e-reader in mid 2011 with the 3rd generation kindle keyboard. I also have the larger kindle dx, and a basic 4th generation kindle, the last one with physical page turners. I have had a previous generation 7" fire hd and currently own 3rd generation fire hdx models in both 7" and 8. 9". I briefly owned a paperwhite, which had to be returned twice for separate defects, so my experience with online store's e-readers/tablets covers quite a few of the ones that have been produced through the years and i have seen features come and go; some i miss greatly and some that have been replaced with newer, better technology. . The most important thing i can stress, especially after seeing so many negative reviews, is read the product information. Know what you are buying! if you have additional questions, online store can be reached by phone, email, and chat. There are also consumer help forums here. Don't blame an innocent kindle for something you didn't research well enough :-). 1. No, this device does not have colour-colour e-ink is extremely rare and horribly expensive if available. (the only colour e-ink reader i am familiar with has been discontinued and it was specifically designed for students and textbooks. ) if you want colour, consider buying an inexpensive fire tablet (available for $50). I read my "coffee table" decorating books, ng magazine, and photography books on my fire for the beautiful display. Most kindle books can be read on this device, but there are a few that are not compatible and must be read on a tablet. I have always seen this message before purchasing the book for my e-reader, so it should be no problem. If you do purchase a non-compatible one by mistake, contact customer service for a refund of the price of the book. 2. No, this device does not have text to speech. I understand and sympathize with those customers who value that feature, it was nice on my older readers. However, remember that this was a feature available when online store only was in the e-reader business. When they started producing tablets, those devices took over (and added) many features never intended for a dedicated e-reader. So, again, you can purchase an inexpensive fire on which to have text to speech, or to have integrated reading by listening to your audio books while reading the matching kindle book. If you have a smartphone and subscribe to audible, download the app and listen to books that way. If you have a public library that utilizes overdrive, download that app and borrow audio books to read. 3. Yes, my device has special offers. My screen saver shows the offer when my device is asleep and on my home page there is a small banner at the bottom with the offer. These offers never show when you are reading. And by holding the power button when you finish reading you can turn the screen off and it will go to a blank white display. The checkout process will tell you what you have chosen as will the product page-if you choose special offers, your cart will tell you the device is $199. If you choose to pay full price of $219, it will be ad free. Again, due diligence before purchasing will solve many problems. 4. No, i don't like the new home screen experience since the latest update. I prefer the less cluttered look of my kindle 4 screen. However, you have options to personalize many of those features. The recommendations can be turned off if you don't want suggestions of what to read/buy next, the to read list can be turned off, goodreads can be turned off. If you don't like black and white book covers on your home page, then change from grid to list. I have done all those things and my home page simply shows a list of books on my device-i have them listed in collections i have made for that specific device. Yes, you still have all of your online store purchased books! they aren't lost. Your home page says "all" and "device". All includes every kindle book you own. The "device" setting shows only those you have actually downloaded to your voyage device. 5. Yellow/blue tint on page. I have not experienced this. I actually looked to see if i could notice it after seeing it mentioned so often. On a couple of occasions i saw the faintest two-tone tint , but it was never distracting and the page is white and very crisp. The lighting is very even as well. 6. Text: i personally saw a discernible difference between my latest generation paperwhite and the voyage as far as contrast. Even with the darkest font, the paperwhite looked slightly washed out to me (regardless of how much or little the light was adjusted). Immediately on powering on the voyage i saw a definite black/white contrast that was pleasing and crisp. A lovely display! yes-you can make the font larger or smaller and there are many fonts from which to choose to tailor your reading enjoyment. 7. Page turners-i have no lag time with turning. I have no problem with too many pages turning at once, and no problem with turning pages backward as opposed to forward. I read with my left thumb resting lightly on the bezel and can turn my page with a small press of the thumb. The back button works just as well. No the turners are not lit when you are in a dark room, but i found that after a few hours of reading, i could tell exactly where on the rim to press whether i actually saw the bar and the little circle above it or not; it just became instinctive. I have tried out the touch turning and it has worked smoothly for me as well, although i prefer by far to use the turners. I don't have huge hands, but i have not had an occasion yet where i touched the screen by mistake and pulled up something i didn't want. I'm sure it happens, but that hasn't been my experience yet. Take time to be led through all the basics when you first use the device-this will help you identify the proper areas of the screen to touch for page turning. Read the manual included on the device. 8. Feel of the device. I can easily hold mine in one hand if i want to, although i usually hold it with both as a matter of preference. It is lighter than any of my other devices and feels very nice in the hand even without a case; with the rubberized coating on the back it is easy to grip. For protection i keep mine in a leather sleeve between uses. 9. Battery. The charge time on the product page is only an estimate and states how long it might be expected to last when doing x number of minutes/hours of reading per day. This is a guideline only. I haven't really had mine long enough to comment on the longevity of the battery, but even if i have to charge it every few days, i don't feel "cheated". I read hours and hours per day and am used to charging every device i already own, so it just isn't something i worry about. I expect quality, but not perfection. 10. Yes, the device comes with a charging cord, but not a wall adapter. Any device adapter that you already own can be used and most of us have some lying around that can be put into use; if you still have an adapter from a previous kindle it will work as well. Could online store add one in the box at no cost? of course. Should i expect them to? i don't think so. If it disturbs you, try to find a reader or tablet that comes with a wall adapter and buy that one instead. 11. Active content (games) is not supported on voyage. I don't personally miss that feature since i never enjoyed seeing any type of game in black/white. . Is this device worth the money involved? only you can answer that. I didn't want to spend $200 for a dedicated e-reader, so i chose the refurbished one for about $50 less. It still has a 1 year warranty from online store just like the new devices and mine looks like it has never been touched. I appreciate having the adjustable internal light. And it is not a back light like on a tablet. It is front-lit. Research the difference as far as eye strain/headaches are concerned. I enjoy the lovely contrast and find it very easy to read on. I honestly don't care about many of the other functions since i don't "socialize" on my reader, nor do i use the experimental browser, . But some customers will love them. . Overall, i have to say that at this point, i couldn't be more pleased with my voyage and look forward to many, many hours of great reading! if you want the experience of reading a print book while not toting around a complete library with you, choose this device or any of the other great e-readers available through online store. If you want colour, music, audio books, text to speech, email, facebook, internet, games, etc, etc. Then choose a tablet.

Disadvantage and Critical reviews

Y. Patricia, Walsall says

I'm coming from the paperwhite gen1. I got some gift cards for christmas and couldn't decide between the voyage and the gen3 paperwhite. I finally found a retail store that had them so i could compare in person. Before, i was leaning toward the paperwhite, but after i saw it, i was voyage all the way. No doubt this is the rolls-royce of e-readers. Which is why i'm so disappointed. About a day of use and my eye started to really noticed a yellow tinting problem in the screen. (i realize that taking a photo of a screen is fairly subjective, and i'm surely to be down voted for even including it, but no matter the color setting of your screen, if you look at the direct bottom vs the direct top of my shot, you can clearly see a difference. ) the longer i read, the more jarring it became. I wrote online store and their first step was for me to wipe the screen with a cloth. - - then they agreed to send me a replacement. In the meantime, i went back to the store demo i saw, and it was apparent to me on that one too, now that i'd seen it. I didn't go looking for a problem with this device; it found me. However, i love the resolution, the non-indented screen, and the pressure buttons. Not to mention the great software which includes the fabulous bookerly font, the much more pleasing word look, and the very useful chapter scanning. The automatic light adjustment is not as great as i wanted because it alters drastically when the sunshine or my angle in the room light changes slightly. But i'm willing to overlook that. What i couldn't deal with at this premium of product and price, is the front lighting issue. And it appears to be systemic for this device, albeit people's sensitivity to notice it varies. I have a shred of hope my replacement will not exhibit the yellowing, but if it does, i'm going back for a full refund and will bear the (now) eye-bleeding resolution of my paperwhite until the next generation of voyage is released. Three stars, yes, for all the wonderful things it does and is. But three stars is not enough to keep it. Will update when replacement arrives.

The kindle voyage has been possible the single best purchase i have ever made. In the last year alone i have read tens of thousands of pages and taken this thing with me everywhere. This devoce has single-handedly reignited my passion for reading, the screen is beautiful and the resolution lets me read at the smallest font possible while still having each letter look as crisp as a printed book. I upgraded from a paperwhite and could not be happier with the glass screen and page buttons, and the battery lasts me a month even with the amount i read. The only reason this is not a perfect 5 out of 5 review is that at no more than a week past the year expiration of my warranty the rubberized backing began to fall off. Not scratch away, or peel from a dent or drop, just roll off onto my thumb from the metal plating on the back. I purchased the leather origami case (also highly recommended) and have only taken the kindle out a handful of times in the entire year to charge it or read in bed. I splurged for the best model online store offered because i thought i would be buying an e-reader that would last me a very, very long time so to have it begin to wear when it was handled so very carefully is a bit disappointing. Attached are a few photos of when it started, and it has continued to spread across the back of the kindle.

I pre-ordered the voyage prior to its release in 10/2014 for $289 including wi-fi and the removal of special offers. I love it for reading and the functionality it offers but two weeks after the warranty expiration, my charging port has stopped working. I took it to a cellphone/tablet repair location and they can't get the part yet to repair it. . I called online store kindle support. They couldn't offer any insight on obtaining a replacement charging port other than to tell me to keep checking their website. The technical support person stated that i would have received a free replacement if i had been within the warranty period but because it was after, i could get a discount on a replacement. I expected an offered discount of 50% - 75% because i was barely a month out of warranty and this was a high-end flagship product. Instead, she offered me $20 dollars off, not even 10%. When i expressed my displeasure, she advised me that this was an exception to policy. They usually only offered $10 off. . I expected it the voyage with all the bells and whistles to last much longer than a year. The cheaper models certainly did. As much as i love the page press feature on this model, i'm hesitant to replace it at virtually full price. I expected better durability and for online store to stand behind their product when it wasn't there. I was sorely disappointed on both counts.

Ordered voyage around 4 days ago and i was so excited to get my hands on the device. However, when i received the kindle voyage, the top 1/3 of the screen was slightly yellow. This may not affect others but for me it bothered me to the point where i had to return the device. . Update*. Received the second device and it was the same as the first device. I thought they fixed the issue? . For $200, this device should not have any of these lighting issues. Ridiculous. . Update 6/23/2016. . After purchasing and returning kindle oasis (it was uncomfortable switching and battery life was terrible without the cover). I decided to give voyage another try. However, like the ones i ordered when it first came out it had yellow tinted screen on top of the screen (about 1/4 or a little more). I am extremely unsatisfied with this product. And this device came later than the guaranteed delivery date. Didn't even bother to contact online store at this point. Just printed return label and returned it the same day i received it. Update*. Returned the second voyage and i am waiting for the third voyage. I hope this one doesn't have any issues, or i'm going to return it and wait for the next gen. . Online store for $200 two toned lighting issue is unacceptable. The only reason i gave it a 2 star is because of their customer service. I will update as soon as i get my third kindle. . Update *. Unfortunately, 3rd voyage was the same as other ones. Another issue for this kindle was that it was refurbished. The representative clearly said that i would receive a brand new kindle but i got a refurbished unit. $200 device with even the slightest color change is unacceptable. I returned the device the same day i received the device. The only good thing about this purchase was the customer service. 5 starts to customer service (thanks to mora, kindle customer service representative). Will not purchase any more kindle voyage and i am eagerly waiting for my refund. . 1 star for the product (yellowish screen which does not match with the $200 price). 5 star for online store (will still be loyal online store customer, i am putting my hopes for the kindle voyage 2)

I decided to get the voyage when i lost the paperwhite. The only reason i shelled out the extra $80 for the voyage is because of the page press. I switch hands holding the kindle when i read and i thought it would be nice to be able to turn the page when i hold it with my left (i know, first world problem). However, i was sorely disappointed. Sometimes the response lagged greatly, other times it would jump two pages with one press. I ended up just using touchscreen to save myself the trouble of relocating. Personally i also feel the loading is not as fast and smooth as the paperwhite. Maybe i just got a lemon.

After my experience i felt a review was justified to help others and reinforce what a large amount consumers are experiencing as well. I'll make this simple and to the point:. . 1. It is an expensive device for the sole purpose of being an e reader nothing more. 2. I experienced screen defects from slightly damage glass, pixel dust to pinkish hue on the top. Very distracting. I had to return my device 3 times on top of the 3 returns for paper white model. What i discovered is there are some variations. And because of this i would purchased locally if you can. Perhaps manufacturing issues are at fault and been addressed or it is trade off from the lack of quality control. Really don't know but all i can give you is my experience. 3. Compared to paper white, the voyage is better. Illustrations are much more viewable and text is slightly crisp this paper white. 4. If holding with one hand turning pages with the haptic feedback buttons is a big plus. 5. The origami case is very good - sold separately. The main feature is the magnetic features to stage the kindle in place and turn it off. Note the case helped giving this a 3 star. 6. The auto brightness can be slow depending on the type of light. It is defiantly faster when coming from outside to indoors. But i notice when i transport from mixed flourence/incandescent to dark rooms with light leaking in it can take time to adjust. I noticed in this scenario level 9 brightness works for me with autobright off. Something that needs to worked out by online store. Especially at this price. 7. The ads are annoying. And to pay $20 extra to have them removed is just pure greed. However, i think some people like them. If they are on point with my interest, then i probably wouldn't mind. However, if you paid $199 with taxes and a case, you want kindle to become a personal device. It doesn't seem that way and feels as if online store still owns the device. You began to question online store logic here. My opinion is if you have a prime account ads should be an option to remove without charge. Because most prime account holders are avid purchasers so i don't think it would impact thier bottom line. . With all that said, as an e reader i like the voyage compared to the other readers. I give it 3 stars because i feel online store tries to express themselves as a quality driven company. And clearly a large amount of these devices are defective in the market. Some will notice these defects other will not. Of course online store will replace them but it's allot of effort and energy to do so. Which drove me to share my experience. We have a choice. That's your power and your right as a consumer. . If money is tight and you need a good e reader, buy a paper white and be prepared for the blotch screen on the bottom. Return it or exchange until you find the right one without these manufacture issues. They do exist. . If you have money to spare, then voyage is for you. But you may need to make a statement to online store that when the value of a product goes up our expectations go up as well. If you don't focus on the most important part (screen and customer experience) it will only be a negative in long run. . Good luck. . I hope this helps. . P. S. My voyage still has the slight pink hue on the top. It's not as bad as the previous ones. But it is there. All the stores models at best buy are not exhibiting this problem. I have also brought my returns to compare side by side in the same lighting. It is definitely not my vision ; )

I loved this device and use it all the time. Without warning or event, it suddenly stopped working literally two weeks and one year after i bought it. I paid $240 for the basic model without advertising. Do you think i'm a happy kindle customer? do you think i feel good about a device that works just long enough to get out of warranty? for one year of use, $240 is pretty steep. And if you think online store will work with you on something like this because you've been a dependable prime customer for years and do most of your purchasing through their service, well you can let go of that silliness right now.

R. Nielsen, Swindon

I have been a dedicated kindle user for many years and read over 100 books per year. In november 2014 i purchased a kindle voyage after the page turn buttons on my original kindle stopped working. As it was 4 years old, i felt i had my money's worth. I loved the new kindle voyage, however after the automatic software update a few weeks ago, it stopped working. After multiple calls to technical support and customer service over a three week period, the only option i was given was to buy a new one as it was out of warranty. As the kindle worked fine prior to the software update, the price of the voyage is high for only getting 14 months use out of it.

Having been an enthusiastic user of the kindle paperwhites, i decided to upgrade to a voyage e-reader when my last paperwhite froze and could not be resuscitated. My experience with the voyage has been awful. It shuts down repeatedly, forcing me to reboot. I discovered that part of the problem is when the flap of the cover is folded back, the voyage is so sensitive that it senses the magnet on its back side and turns itself off. Other time, it just turns off repeatedly. Despite my ordering an ad-free version, every time the voyage turns itself off, i get bombarded with suggestions that i order a book title that spontaneously appears on the page, one that i have to actively reject. And these books are just the most awful stuff, mostly self-published titles in the romance, bodice-ripper category, a class of book that i have never ordered from online store. The experience has been terrible. The voyage is terrible. The official e-reader cover is terrible. I have never had this kind of experience in over a decade using kindle books.

F. Crawford, South Carolina

The only reason i'm giving the kindle voyage a 3 star rating instead of a 5 star rating is the screensavers are awful and you can't change them. I spent the extra $20 to get the version without ads and i'm disappointed that the ads are replaced by ugly screensavers that can't be changed or modified. It's either children's blocks or a fountain pen or a generic squiggle or other awful options that show up at random. I'd happily spend $5 on a downloadable collection of screensaver images. Why not give the option to show the front cover of the book you're reading when your kindle is off? other than that annoyance, i love my kindle voyage but every time i pick it up, i'm reminded of my frustration with not being able to modify the screensavers. Please fix this online store. We will pay! please take our money!

I just returned a kindle voyage received today, and asked for a replacement, because shockingly it has a very yellow screen, with yellow lighting unevenly spread out over the screen. I compared it with my kindle paperwhite gen 2, which is even more white and sharp screen than the voyage by which is far more expensive (see attached photo! ). . Recently i also ordered a kindle oasis for myself, another one previously ordered for my son as a gift. While the quality of my son's oasis is "luckily" great (very white and sharp screen), the one i received was terribly yellow, with several black dots on the screen. I returned it and reordered again, same problem and actually even worst-the screen very yellow, simply i could not justify such a high price and premium product claim with a sloppy product. Really not sure why voted by "oprah's favourite things" as one of her favourites. Customers must judge by their own eyes and not swayed easily by promotional claim! when you google search more about the overall criticisms of oasis especially, you may have more objective opinion about it, since many including myself experienced the same poor product quality experience. . After returned kindle oasis twice, i tried to order kindle voyage to move to another option, hoping for a better white and sharp screen, if not extremely better than the oasis (by which it claims to be very white and sharp screen), at least it should beat my kindle paperwhite gen 2. Not the case, actually, so i just requested for a replacement. The cs of kindle team assured me that they will send me a truly white and sharp screen one this time. But i don't have high hope for that, since many wrote in the reviews that even replacements got the same problems again. With her amazingly great and kind service, i agreed and hope that they will deliver what they promised because this is the third time i experienced kindle's poor quality problems, both with their 2 top lines. . Now i am really concerned about kindle's quality and start to lose trust and confidence about their qc. How can such a customer-centric company on earth sends sloppy, non-qc products to customers like this, while commanding such high prices. While online store should not spend so much time on just raising kindles' prices to premium levels, they should be more concerned about truly raising quality standards to premium levels to justify the outrageous prices they command. I recently bought kobo aura one too, bigger screen size. Yes, they are not good with their pdf reading and highlighting features, but i must say it is a very good ereader option, apart from kindle. But their ebooks are of less choices and far overpriced than online store's, which are certainly the trade-offs and downsides. But at least, another great choice beyond online store nowadays, since online store focuses more and more on raising prices of their kindles rather than taking good care of their quality like in their past.

I got this as an upgrade to my kindle touch. I wanted a lit screen for night reading so i was looking forward to upgrading. But no, i had to return it. I side load most of my books and this just doesn't work well for that. If you try to put non-cloud items in folders, it makes you go through two pop up windows saying that the book isn't cloud supported so it won't be backed up to the cloud in the collection. For every single non-cloud item you select to add to a collection. Every. Single. One. I have over 400 books, most non-online store, and i like to keep them organized. I was not going to go through that error message 800 times. (more, actually, since i put some books in multiple collections. ). . Yeah, not happening. I mean, i like the feel of the reader. I like the screen. I even like the page turn buttons. But to be so handicapped by cloud-related requirements? no thank you. I mean, if they had just put an option of "ignore this warning", i would have kept this reader and enjoyed it. But no. I have too many non-online store books and i like to keep my library organized within collections and those two attributes do not work together in online store's world. . I ended up getting a kobo aura h2o. The home screen interface on the kobo is better (imo) than the kindle even though the overall feel of the kobo isn't as slick and streamlined. The kobo also seems a little glitchier (though i have read close to 500 hours on it in the almost six months i've had it so i don't exactly go easy on it). Honestly, the kobo reminds me a bit of the sony reader i had, in both the positives and negatives. Both kobo and sony, actually, remind me of android (functional but not exactly aesthetically attractive, customizable enough that you can accidentally break it a lot) whereas the kindle is more of a mac (sleek and pretty in both physical design and interface, works how it works and you better like it because you don't change it). (for reference, i normally lean towards the mac side of the spectrum (i like pretty things and i don't feel like messing with customizations) which is probably why i liked my previous kindle so. ). . Overall, i really like the ease and nice design of the kindle best, but the functionality isn't there for me and how i use it to read. If i only got online store books and love cloud-based storage, i would have loved the kindle. But i get a lot of indie stuff and free fiction from online and i hate the current dependency on the cloud for everything, so i kind of hate the kindle.

I love ebooks but at 14 months, under light use, good conditions, good care, this kindle froze permanently. One morning it worked, that evening it stopped. There was no special event (it wasnt dropped) that would have changed its status, it just stopped working. In my opinion this is a hardware defect. By google search i found this isn't uncommon and when it happens they become bricks like this one did, and online store doesn't cover this problem. Online store's "kindle support" responded by offering me a new replacement which at first i thought was great until they revealed the price of the replacement: $189 plus tax and shipping. In other words they were selling me a new one. Online store's normal customer service cannot deal with any kindle complaints so there's absolutely no way to get normally high quality online store customer service. They just transfer you to the overseas kindle department. If you buy this expecting a normally high quality online store customer service experience just be aware it doesn't exist for this product. They farm it out to overseas departments whose job is purely to let you down and sell you a new one. They explain the warranty is for 12 months so at 14 months its out of warranty and there is no coverage and no way to repair it, and they try to sell another one under the guise of a discount. At $199 i would think you could rely on getting more than 14 months especially under light use. If there is a hardware defect issue - and i believe there is - then i would expect online store to step up to the plate and replace their defective product. It's one of the worst customer service experiences i've encountered. Therefore i would not recommend this product.

After a year i can say the kindle is mostly fantastic. The screen is easy on the eyes, the letters are sharp, and it's lightweight. But, the major flaw i've had is that it will occasionally stop "pushing" the sync out. It'll receive it from my other devices but when i go to those to update from the kindle, they don't even though they still do from each other (ipad, iphone). And once it stops doing this the only solution is to deregister it and start from factory settings. Re-registering, going through the tutorial, re-downloading books, and re-adjusting the settings. Annoying. It's infuriating because it'll work perfectly for a week or two, then do it again. Customer service told me the only solution is to do what i've described. That's just lame. It's sad that my 2011 keyboard kindle is more reliable than this one. . A lesser quibble is that the touch is finicky and makes it clunky to navigate sometimes. Especially when highlighting a word and trying to go to x-ray or the web. Sometimes having to press it 3-5 times to get it to register. Not as major as my previous complaint but it certainly takes away from the user experience. . Love reading on the kindle when it works but losing push sync is unacceptable at this price.

I. Anderson, Harrow says

This is a good speed and functional device. It has the best design of all the kindle generations and it has almost every one function of all the previous kindle generations. However, aside the great looking design, there is not too much here. There are only two reasons to choose this over the paperwhite: 1) the adaptive front light and 2) the pagepress sensors. Sadly, none of these is satisfying. . First, the low sensibility of the device to the different levels of light does not match with the different levels of the front light. And, due to this, you have to adjust continuously the light level, which makes this function completely useless. . Second, you cannot use the pagepress sensors on the landscape mode, and when you change from a landscape mode to a menu page (which are always in portrait mode) the buttons does not work at all. Unlike the previous kindles that had turn pages buttons, this one is incapable to use turn page buttons on landscape mode without reason, and this is an incredible and irrational step back. . I really hope that these errors will be repaired within futures updatings, otherwise to buy a kindle voyage will be ridiculous, since it is the same that the paperwhite but more expensive and with two extra functions that rather doesn t work at all or do work but within ridiculous limits. And i am not even including the typical issue with the two colors on the display light, which i think is a minor problem (since the light doesn t have to be used on high levels in a low light environment) compared to those mentioned up.

. Cassella, Pays de la Loire

I've got mixed feelings on this one, unfortunately. This review is coming from a kindle enthusiast who has owned or used nearly every variation of the device since the 1st generation. . Size & weight. -. It's noticeably smaller and lighter than the paperwhite. When i saw the specs it didn't really strike me as something that would make much difference to me, but in real life it's actually great. The voyage fits into a few of my coat pockets that the paperwhite was just a little too big to fit into. . Origami cover. -. I know there's a separate product page for the origami cover, but it's worth mentioning here as it is the "official" cover. The origami cover is ugly and i was skeptical, but i actually love it. It's weird because it opens by flipping over the top like a notepad. This actually makes it more comfortable to hold when the cover is open, in my opinion. It's hard to describe, but there are a lot more ways to hold the voyage when it's attached to this cover, and just generally is more comfortable to use. The origami part of the case works great as well. It stands vertically or horizontally (if you're laying down and reading, this is amazing). . The other great new thing about this case is that the voyage attaches to it magnetically. It attaches and detaches very easily, unlike the paperwhite which seemed to be nearly permanently attached to the standard case. This is great because if you decide you want to read the device and appreciate how light/thin it is without a case attached, it's super easy to take it out. . It's pricey but worth it. . Pagepress. -. One of the new features is pagepress, which has sensors on the outer edge of the device that you can squeeze to turn pages. The device lets you adjust the sensitivity between low/med/high - by default it's set to medium. I found medium to require squeezing way too hard, what felt unnatural and more than any button would or should require to advance to the next page. I adjusted it to "low" and it works perfectly now. Thumb rests on the sensor, and a gentle squeeze advances the page, and haptic feedback (a tiny vibration/buzz) is there to give you a tactile response that the so-called button was pressed. The haptic feedback can be adjusted (low/med/high)or disabled as well. It doesn't trigger accidentally like i feared it might, and i actually really like it. . Auto brightness. -. The device now has a light sensor in the top left corner that is supposed to detect ambient light levels and adjust the brightness of the kindle accordingly. I've had very mixed results with this. First, auto brightness is disabled on the device by default - which seems odd given that it's one of the key new features of the device. The auto brightness worked very briefly when i first got the device, but it always seemed to be a little off from how i would like the screen to look. In lit rooms, it tended to be a little on the darker side, and in dark rooms it was too bright. . Well, shortly after using the voyage the auto brightness quit working altogether. I restarted the device a few times with no luck. After contacting support, they asked me to proceed with a factory reset. It's worked again since then, but doesn't leave me with a ton of confidence since it started acting up so quickly after getting the device. . Screen. -. I've seen the reports online of users who have a "two toned" screen - blueish on the bottom, yellowish on the top. I'm afraid to say that i have experienced this as well. Spending upwards of $200 for a luxury ereader, it's really surprising and disappointing that they haven't got this figured out by now - this is supposed to be a premium device and it's the 3rd generation frontlit reader for online store. This is reminiscent of the paperwhite v1 launch with all of the splotchy lighting - while it was a huge leap over the prior generation, you expect something like this to work perfectly. It doesn't. . The paperwhite v1 had splotchy lighting, paperwhite v2 was supposed to have "improved" lighting - which it did, but still wasn't perfect (mine still had some bright spots). But to be honest, the lighting on my paperwhite v2 looks better and more consistent than the voyage. It's unfortunate that this is a step back. I hope this isn't a widespread issue, but i fear that it is after seeing numerous users on other forums posting about it and sharing pictures of their device. It'll be a shame if the only upgrade next year will be a voyage v2 with "improved lighting", just like what happened with the paperwhite. I'll be more skeptical about being an early adopter next time. . Aside from the uneven lighting, which i can't decide how distracting it is, the contrast and picture quality of the screen is outstanding. When i compare the text from my paperwhite v2 to the voyage side-by-side, the text on the paperwhite almost looks blurry - which i wouldn't have believed until i saw it myself. . In conclusion, my favorite things about the voyage are how much more comfortable it is to use (the origami cover offering more ways to hold/use the device, the pagepress sensor working great), the quality of the screen is outstanding, but the uneven lighting and flakey auto brightness are leaving me disappointed. I'm not sure if these were rushed out too quickly or if online store has poor quality control, but either way it's unacceptable.

This is my first experience with kindle ownership. In the past i have owned a sony prs-500, a kobo ereader, a kobo touch, multiple nook simple touches, multiple nook simple touches with glowlight, and a nook glowlight. My point is this; i have had years of experience with e-book readers. I am shocked at the quality control issues online store is having with the voyage. . I have purchased nine kindle voyages. Every single one has had a bad screen. They have all had a yellow tint near the top. Some have had pixels that are stuck in the uncharged/off state. Some have had glittering points on the screen. . I purchased five of the units from best buy and returned each one. I purchased four through online store, and am finally keeping my last one, even though it still has screen issues. Why i am keeping it? any time i get a new e-reader i gift out my old one. So, i have nothing to go back to. . Now that i have that out of the way i can say this: the voyage is a great e-book reader. It has some great features like page press buttons (nook simple touch had these four years ago), front-lit screen, (nook had this first too), goodreads integration, landscape mode, and x-ray to name a few. However, that doesn't excuse a poor screen on every single voyage i have had. This isn't an isolated issue in any way. It beggars belief that by chance i received nine out of nine with bad screens.

C. Palmer, Tennessee

Well, i was afraid of this, i normally luck out when it comes to things like this but it really does seem like this issue is widespread. Today i opened up my kindle voyage and discovered that it had the dreaded yellow tint on the top of the screen. Whereas the bottom was white and crisp the top was an ugly, distracting yellow. I hate to do this as i love the overall lightness and feel of the device, but i don't think i will be able to get over this issue. Will be returning and hoping online store remedies this situation soon. Seriously, they must realize they are losing in this situation. . I probably wont return right away, i'll use it for a few days and maybe i can get used to it.

I 've had my kindle voyage since december 2015. I bought the voyage for all the good things it would do to enhance my reading but high on the list was page press. Age has made my hands a little shaky and a touch screen can become a challenge so i thouht page press was the perfect solution and it was. Then, intermittently, it stopped working. I emailed online store customer service and was told a phone call would be necessary. Made the call and was told that a software update would fix everything. It did for two days then page press stopped. Talked to customer service. Was told that there had been a new update that fixed the problem and i didn't get it because i routinely leave the voyage in airplane mode to save the battery. Okay, got the update and turned off airplane mode. Went for six days then this morning no paging forward with page press. The voyage has enough bells and whistles that i will continue to use it but i won't call customer service and i will tell you not to count on having page press.

As an owner of the kindle keyboard, in its most expensive version, and as an owner of a voyage, also configured at the top of its price range:. The voyage is not that special. . A strictly objective feature for feature comparison favors the same or less money being spent on a fire. If, like me you either have no need or interest in most of these features (how many devices do you need with an on board camera? ) then there are other e readers at less cost. . My bottom line:. If you have an online store e reader and you are happy with it, do anything you have to do to keep it. This includes buying and installing new batteries as you need them. If you are looking to buy your first online store e reader, the voyage is not a bad choice, it is only one among others. . What attracted me to the voyage? . Saving the main reason for last:. You can still get the voyage without special offers. For many people this feature is unimportant. I do not know what exactly i am giving up when i give online store control of advertising on my reader. If at some future time this means my reading time will be interrupted with ads, it is worth money to me to be to forestall that future. Notice that the fire does not seem to give you a choice, but the e readers still do. . I selected to buy the free 3 g. This seems a little strange to say that you bought something free. The idea is that you buy the extra capability to receive 3g but do not have to buy a 3g subscription service. This is not explained in the ad copy but is a fairly decent deal. 3g is an extravagance as most people can download copy via another device, for me that is a computer. Restricting yourself to wireless hot spots seems to work well for others. I do not like the limitations and likely future for cloud storage, esp if throttled to wifi locations so this is a choice i recommend for any e reader. . Built-in light. I have no strong opinion on this feature. I have moved from shade to bright light and had no particular problems. I rarely read in a fully darkened room or in bed. Compared with my kindle keyboard the voyage seems to handle glare and lower light situations a better. . The buttons. The page buttons had been a strong selling point for me. Most often i am eating while i read and am repelled by the idea that i have to put my fingers on the reading surface to page up or back. 90% of the buttons on my kindle keyboard were a 100% waste. The half dozen i used i used regularly and like having that choice. Being forced to use a touchscreen is something i actively hate. On the voyage the page forward and page back buttons work reasonably well. Unfortunately they are operated from the top of the voyage reading surface and not from the sides. This would not matter except that the voyage also has page forward and page back touchscreens activated from about the same spot on the reading surface. This means as you reach, particularly with your left thumb, as you might do while holding the kindle you can activate the page back touchscreen and have it activate once or more before you succeed in pressing the page forward button. In addition accidentally touching the screen can cause one or more page changes intended or not. This may be deliberate or a design oversight but it is a bad design. At the risk of over emphasizing this point, the only feature that distinguishes the kindle voyage from any other e reader has been deliberately or otherwise sabotaged. . More general comments:. Placing the on-off button just inside an upper corner of the back of the device is a gimmick. There may be a dubious advantage in placing the button where you can find it if you are holding just the device. But this placement guarantees that any cover you buy for the voyage must be custom-made to allow for this awkward placement. . The charging cable supplied with the voyage does not include a wall socket. The assumption is that you own a device that will allow you to charge from a usb port. In my case this is not a big deal because i still own a desktop computer and have five or six usb ports available. If you have moved into a newer laptop or an even smaller device the availability of usb ports for charging devices is limited. In other words having bought the premium ereader in the kindle product line you have to come out of pocket extra bucks to keep the battery charged. . The charging port on the voyage is bottom center. This means if you also bought one of those nifty covers that allow you to stand up your kindle, it is not convenient to set up your kindle and read it while you are charging. There seems to be no profit in this particular design it's just a bad one. In addition i bought one of the high-end origami type covers. This cover only uses magnets to hold your kindle. While fumbling to push in the charging cable it is very easy to push your kindle out of its cover and have the reader drop to the floor and get damaged. I have elsewhere reviewed this cover of will simply say that it was another expensive letdown. . Battery life - i have no reason to believe the battery in my kindle will provide near the battery life charging time advertised. It is possible that my battery is defective and that i should return this voyage to online store and have it replaced - more about this shortly. The voyage gives you a choice between being connected to the wireless/ 3g network or to be in airplane mode. While connected you are burning through your battery and so i am usually in airplane mode. On the keyboard you are either connected or you were not. Why "connected" or "airplane mode" i do not know. The people at kindle help will insist that you should always be connected so that you can always get upgrades. Upgrades do not occur that often and if you have just run down your battery to zero prior to this upgrade delivery it not can a load anyway. . Both this kindle and my keyboard have in lieu of an on-off modes, choices that i think have no name. In the voyage there appear to be three flavors of on and off. "on" means that all features are active and available and presumably you are busily reading a book. Variation one of "off" is familiar to all other kindle readers as meaning your screen will flip through various displays and depending on whether you are connected to wireless, online store "central" can download those famous upgrades while you sleep. If you press and hold the off button long enough you'll get the choice to turn the screen off. It is not clear to me if this version of off is any more off than the other version but i tend to use it in the hope that it will extend the life of my battery charge. . Among the things online store does not and never has told you is the process for exchanging defective e readers or replacing defective or past their service life- worn out batteries. You mail your e reader to online store. If it is a version online store still sells they replace yours with a totally blank one, note that it may not be a new one. If it is a version online store no longer sells you get whatever version they deem an appropriate replacement and again it will not be a new one. . The result is you receive a different device possibly a different model of device. In either case none of your content is loaded into the replacement device. In the case of a kindle voyage it matters not if you have organized your reading into what they call "collections" and saved versions of your organized content either at the cloud or on your computer it is up to you to reload whatever content you choose to carry on your replacement e reader. This process is somewhat better on the voyage that it was on the keyboard. For reasons online store does not share the process is needlessly repetitive and user unfriendly. For a device that is so leading-edge it has a touchscreen it is amazing how difficult it is to move content in groups like folders instead of one or very few at a time. . Creating collections is marginally easier in this new e reader but i think online store fails to grasp what this process should be about. All of the books i own constitute my collection. How i choose to organize my collection should be thought of as either sectioning books into general headings (fiction, nonfiction, read, reading and so forth) or indexing. Indexing more typically called meta-tags seems to be the concept online store is promoting. But besides not using either term content is not provided to you with any meta-tags already assigned. It would be very useful if certain groupings came with the purchase. For example books could download already meta tagged as fiction, biography and so on. . Two very simple things online store could use would instantly improve the problems of moving content from an existing kindle to a new kindle, for dealing with a stolen or broken kindle or anything else that would cause you to need to re register a kindle. Allowing you to organize your kindle content into collections either in your cloud storage or on your home computer / laptop and then allowing you to mirror the structure in your on board content involves no new technology could improve customer experience across the entire product line. . The new kindle voyage is smaller than my old keyboard. For one thing the entire keyboard section is not needed. It is also thinner than my old device. The voyage will fit an inside pocket, the keyboard will not. This criteria is more important to me than weight. If weight matters to you there is no comparison the voyage is much smaller and lighter. . I was very happy with my kindle keyboard. I chose to replace it rather than go through battery failure. My general philosophy with replacing electronic devices is to go with the most recent version in the most powerful combination my budget will allow. My decision to buy the voyage and to spend the extra money for features and cover and plug was if not entirely eyes open they were certainly deliberate. Having bought the premium product with the premium add-ons i cannot say that my experience has been "premium". This is a good e reader i will stay with it but there is nothing about it that makes it a must have experience. . In the case of the voyage, i think online store was using the price to suggest that there are other choices.

Extremely fragile/poor build quality. In seven months of ownership it broke twice. The first time the screen froze while on a long trip and no reset attempts were effective. Online store replaced upon my return. Next i took it out of a padded backpack after walking to a coffee shop (no known trauma) and a single crack split the screen. Touch won't work on one half of the device and the crack is very distracting when attempting to read. Online store won't replace because it has already been replaced once (despite the fact that that was a defective device and of no fault of mine) and offers no repair option. I will read on my phone or buy a rival e-reader going forward because there's no way i will continue to buy books that can only be read on a kindle if their devices are so shoddy and customer service/repair options are nonexistent. . Oh, and don't pay for kindle unlimited if you do have a kindle-nothing you would actually want to read there and intentionally difficult to search (their way of hiding the fact that nothing you would want to read is available on the service, just a bunch of romance novels and other trash, no literature or even anything you'd find on a bestseller list). Buy the books you want or better yet check them out from a library for free via overdrive. . Full disclosure: online store did offer me a $10 gift card (for being a longtime customer). Thanks a lot.

I purchased the kindle voyage with great hopes. I have an old kindle (4th kindle i think) but it has no light so i finally wanted to get the best kindle to use. I have one with long buttons on the side and i wanted one with the button option and the voyage seemed like the perfect fit. . I use the kindle to read books from the kindle online store store and arabic books that are scanned in pdf format (due to lack of e-book content for arabic books). Well my experience is bad! . . 1- i don t like the slanted edges of the devise because it makes it harder for me to hold. 2- i also got a device that had small dents in the back right out of the box! . The biggest problem is how it handled the pdf files. Missing dots, letters and even words! see picture. The arabic pdf books that appear perfect on all other devices (older kindle, iphone, computer, kindle app on iphone, etc. ) are unreadable on the voyage! . . Contacted customer service and after chatting for a long time and rebooting, reregistering, re-everything the problem still existed! finally they tell me that it does not support arabic. But the files are in pdf and i hoped it would deal with it as an image if it was not recognizable. I am not tech savvy and have no clue why this is happening. I might have gotten a fluke! . . Returning and buying a paperwhite to see if it works. I am sad because i totally wanted the voyage to be my new best book.

It's not with joy or happiness that i find myself writing this review. Rather, it's with intense disappointment and frustration. When i buy an online store product, i'm buying a brand name "online store" with the assurance of great products, superb customer service, and the desire to satisfy customers. What i have experienced in the last week would be the absolute opposite of what i had expected. . I currently have a kindle touch, which is far beyond its years but still working perfectly. With the release of the kindle voyage i found a worthy replacement for it, one with a front lit screen and something that i have missed very much: page turns. Granted the price tag was higher than the other kindles, but i felt it was worth a big upgrade since i had a 3 year old kindle. . I did see all these reviews on online store warning of the dreaded yellow tint on the top third of the screen. I thought maybe i'd be lucky. Wow was i wrong. Whether it's because the product was rushed out, or if i just happened to get 3 lemons, i'll never know. . First, my kindle voyage arrived last week and immediately i knew i won the lemon lottery. I passed the kindle around to a few of my friends and all of them noticed the yellow tint on the top third of the screen. Super. Maybe a replacement won't be this bad? . . With my 2nd kindle voyage i had a looming feeling that this just was not going to work out no matter how many i went through. The 2nd one was even worse than the 1st. I didn't know it was possible but the tint was even worse on this one. Trying to reign in my frustration i thought let me try one last time. Maybe third time is the charm? . . The 3rd kindle voyage arrived yesterday and it's with immense frustration that i have to say while it's probably the best of the 3 it still suffers from the dreaded yellow tint. I thought maybe i could just live with it. But why should i? this is an elite level ereader that i spent $200 on and waited weeks for. I won't make it that easy for online store, i have a high standard for your products and i really should not have to settle. . Now, throughout the customer service process i have been told a few times that this is how the product is. No. That's not true and it's deeply irresponsible for the customer service rep to pass the buck back to me as the customer. I know full well there are those out there that have gotten good kindle voyages. Now it might be a bad batch of production but as a consumer i do not know that. I only know what my research has told me, that this is unusual and unacceptable. . I still have all 3 kindle voyages in my house and i'm going to send them all back next week. I lined them all up next to each other on max brightness and it was very obvious how bad my luck was. Now my frustration has reached the point where i just want a refund. Ideally, i'd love a kindle voyage that is actually the proper color throughout, but i guess it's raining lemons.

This is my second kindle and i've especially enjoyed the readability of the print as my eyesight is failing, and wi-fi connectivity since i travel a lot and love to binge read. I use my device almost everyday. However, kindle tech support just declared my kindle dead after only 15 months-it won't reload after restarting-with no explanation. Unfortunately, i didn't buy an extended warranty with the voyager since my first kindle (the original model) is over 10 years old and still working. I strongly recommend you consider an extended warranty for this model. . Btw: online store offered me a discount of about 10 bucks from $269 to $255. Really? the online price is only $199.

Completely died after 1. 5 year. Skip this so-called top-of-line voyage (which is barely better than the paperwhite) with 3g! i got it with online store factory case/stand and now it is stuck at the boot screen forever. I called their so-called "technical support" (who is just reading from a script the entire time) who said because it is past the 1-year warranty, the best price they could offer me for replacement was $110 off a non-3g model. Because of apple's inane and corrosive influence on the ce industry, almost nothing has a removable battery, so there is nothing you can do if the same happened to you! so it went from a $300 paperwhite to $300 paper weight. Nice egg you laid there online store - stick with selling things other people make! i have been in i. T. Over 20 years and this was by far the biggest insult i have ever had. I watch the price boards/blogs all the time - bgr has it for $199 right now, so i would save a whopping $10 for a model without 3g and a shorter warranty! ? ! ? . . As for the device, i was never impressed by it in the first place. It was slow. The touch was dismally slow and unresponsive.

H. Wells, Stockport

I've had almost every kindle made. This is the lightest, sleekest, most beautiful one yet. And i really loved the bezel page turn feature. Unfortunately, my screen was yellow on the top third, then it faded to a beautiful white. I asked for a replacement and they sent one. It was yellow on the top two thirds, and barely made it to white before the bottom of the page. You can see for yourself in the attached picture. . I was also told it was "normal, " and one rep even told me it was a "feature" to reduce eye strain. This is *clearly* a production/quality control issue, and why online store won't just admit it, i'll never know. My husband had to get 3 kindle paperwhites when they first came out to get one that wasn't defective. For $300 (with tax), i just didn't want to go through that with this one. . I'll wait until online store admits they had a manufacturing issue, and that it's been resolved, and then try again. For now, this is truly a two-star review, because three stars means "it's okay, " and it really just isn't.

I have both voyage and paperwhite. The battery life is the same or very similar. The screen resolution is the same. Voyage is lighter by less than 1oz (25 gram weight difference). This is a negligible difference, a typical kindle cover is several times heavier than the difference in weight between the two devices. I gave both devices to play around to a few friends who were not very familiar with kindles. Nobody has a strong preference- about half liked paperwhite a bit better, the other half slightly preferred voyage. I personally like a slightly sturdier feel of paperwhite but it is a matter of taste. Other reviews mention that voyage uses costly materials it may be true but it did not make the product any better. The reading experience on two devices is identical. The main difference is that voyage has a few more leds to brighten the screen. This means that when the screen of paperwhite is at maximum brightness it looks identical to the screen of voyage when voyage is at about 80% of the max brightness. I never felt that my paperwhite is not bright enough, in fact when i read at night i use it at 50% brightness. Thus having a slightly brighter screen is not worth anything to me. The difference in brightness is so small that i can only notice it when comparing devices side by side. The other difference between paperwhite and voyage are the page turning buttons on voyage. I did not have any issues with page turning on paperwhite, for aesthetic reason i prefer not to have extra buttons but it does not really make a difference either. Finally, voyage can automatically adjust screen brightness. Unfortunately, i found that this feature did not work well for me- to get to the brightness that i prefer i had to make manual adjustment so i disabled that feature (it is disabled by default probably because many users prefer not to have it). . One more observation- origami cover is a neat idea but is absolutely useless- it turns into a not so sturdy book stand- for a small minority of users who are in a habit of reading while seating at a desk with a book in a book stand it is better just to pick up a book stand and keep it on a desk. For most people the origami cover dramatically increases the weight of the product without much benefit. I prefer to keep my kindle's in a sleeve. It is sleeve- this way when i read i can hold the kindle without holding the extra weight. Imo sleeves are a better and cheaper choice for both paperwhite and voyage. Online store pushes online store kindle covers very hard because they make more money on covers than on kindles themselves. . The bottom line- paperwhite and voyage are basically identical, if the price were the same choosing between the two would be difficult. Considering an enormous price difference the choice is obvious.

I received a voyager as a birthday gift in late february. It accepted set up and downloaded items from my cloud perfectly fine. Then, when i first plugged it in later that eveing, a message came on the screen, stating it needed to update. After the update, it then proceeded to freeze, show error messages, and would not function, despite many resets and turning it on and off. I called the very next morning and spoke to a representatvie about the issue and after attempting to troubleshoot and fix the issues (as i had already done several times), i was informed by the representative that she would be "sending me a replacement kindle via two-day shipping". What she failed to mention was that the replacement kindle was going to be a refurbished voyager! . . When the replacement arrived, it was not in the voyager packaging the original gift arrived in, but rather a generic online store box. When i called online store kindle customer service, it took quite a bit of time to finally get the representative (2nd person i spoke with) to "be honest with me" (his exact wording) and admit that my brand new voyager had been replaced with a refurbished voyager. For a brand new product to be replaced by a refurbished model, with no implicit notification from online store, has accomplished the job of totally destroying my faith in online store and their kindle products! many of us would call this " lying by omission"! . . Had i owned the voyager for several weeks or months, i would completely understand receiving a refurbished replacement. However, to have a brand-new, fresh out of the box, $200 voyager, replaced with a refurbished model, under much less than honest customer service is inexcusable! i have sent both voyagers back (the original gift and refurbished relpacement) and have started looking into e-readers that are not associated with online store or kindle. This is very unfortunate, as i love the kindle reading app on my ipad and phone and am a voracious reader. Had i not questioned the condition of the replacement, online store would have succeeded in duping both me and the people who gave me the voyager as a gift. Epic fail online store!
