Review for /echo plus built hub included

Price was 164. This is the future i've been waiting for. At least to some extent. I can't think of a tech that more altered my day to day since getting a cell phone. This future of voice assistants is where the future is headed, i can't already tell. The ease of use beats out a cell phone hands down. Being able to say a song and have it play, much faster than taking out a phone, typing it in, and then having it come up. It was obvious. Phones as we know them will be obsolete in 5-10 years. . Phones have been adding features into our lives with new apps and such, but at the same time making things more complex. Keeping track of everything and remembering how to use them. Not with this though. It's intuitive. You say what you want, and it figures out how to execute the command. Granted, there are limitations. Set the expectations right. This is new technology and will get better in time. But it is infinitely better than i had expected going in already. I was at work yesterday and almost caught myself saying "alexa, what time is it? " instead of taking my phone out. . This is only going to get better and more effective. I'm actually excited to see what comes next, be it software or hardware. Two weeks ago, i hardly knew what an echo was/actually does. Now? i'm sold. Within a day or two of using it i was on board. This is the real deal, if you actually use it and don't expect it to be like jarvis from iron man.

Foreword

Well, i did a lot of research into which home assistant i wanted in an effort to make my home a "smart home" and i went with the echo range. I just found that they are more compatible and they do pretty much what i want them to do. The price is right and i use it nearly everyday. The i am still trying to figure out the app, but it has many skills and works with some exciting products i already have. This device is the hub and a great sounding built in speaker. To maximize the functionality of this device, i really do suggest having online store prime and online store unlimited music. . Pros. Compatibility. Connectivity. Good sounding speaker. Has many skills. Understands me even though i have an accent. . Cons. App is a little confusing. . If my review was helpful, please click the yes tab below. Echo plus with built-in hub silver + philips hue bulb included Review (Electronics)

On a scale of 1 (poor) - 10 (awesome). . Sound quality: 7 (if you want better, and you want smart home wifi connection, sonos is the only other option) - sound on this is as good as or better than almost any bluetooth speaker i ve ever used. . Multi-room sound: 6 (this is a new feature one of the main reasons we purchased this. The feature is good, but not great. Each speaker can be in only 1 group - so i can t create a group called downstairs which includes my study and another called entertaining that includes everything except my study and another called everywhere that includes the upstairs sitting room). . Alexa voice recognition: 4 (we still regularly have to repeat ourselves, and find that we just can t get her to understand some things. We should probably take an afternoon to just sit down and work with alexa to get better with her, but even then i think online store needs to do more work making her more intuitive to use). . Alexa capabilities: 3 (she doesn t connect to all smart home devices. Although this device includes a smart home bridge, it doesn t work with all devices. We have separate bridges for garage doors, logitech pop switches, door locks, and video cameras. Even then, she doesn t interface with all of those devices yet). . Alexa mobile apps: 4 (it seems like we should be able to open our online store music app . That we pay $12 a month for . And have it play to our echos . Nope. It seems like it should be just as easy to use our alexa mobile app to control lights as the native app for those lights . This would be a great help so we can use 1 app for all devices that alexa works with . But it s too many extra clicks). . Overall, we re happy with our purchase. Our main objective was to put quality music in more rooms and it has done a decent job of that (better than the multiple bluetooth speakers we ve tried). And we like having the alexa for some things. But some improvements clearly still need to be made. -T. Olga

PROS
  • The main reason i got this new echo was because of the dolby sound and the speakers upgrade but is just a huge a disappointment sound is muffled and awful! bass is almost none existent, no room filling sound as previous versions . First gen echo is still unbeatable! second gen echo is still way more better than this one. Most of the time echo plus hear but do nothing. Other times it does random things or doesn t understand. What happened online store? please do something to fix this . . Update: this new echo takes so too long to boot up. Then after the light ring flashes, it hears you but do nothing. After firmware update the bass had a little improvement but still first gen echo sound better and louder. I really miss the "hello" greeting after boot. It was nice. 1st and 2nd gen echo still say "hello" :)). . Come on online store. You can do better. Let's make another firmware update to rescue this echo. . Update: online store is listening. The new software release really improved the sound quality! great job online store! still i think you can do better but lets focus on command recognition for now. Most of the times there's no action or do some other stuff. Could you bring back the "hello" after boot? :))
  • My husband and i love the echo plus the volume and sound qualikty is amazing we also purchased the dot for each room and they link up amazingly. It understands our commands and works great.
CONS
  • I decided to "upgrade" from the first generation. The 2nd generation doesn't seem to hear as well, take longer to respond to your requests, and i am having to reset(unplug it and plug it back in) for some reason. Stick to the original. Its almost as if they went backwards and made it slower.
  • The echo part is fine. The hub part isn't worth the extra money over a regular echo. It took a reset of the echo for the hue light bulb to finally connect. After that, the hub could only turn the light on and off. No scene or anything else. Buy the echo and a wink 2 hub for any type of automation . I returned the plus for a regular echo and a real hub.
  • "built in hub" is very misleading. Purchase phillips hue dimmer switch (for those times when you don't want to use your voice) and it will not link to the hue light bulb with out a separate hub! having known this i would have bought an echo without the plus and put the money toward a separate hub. The echo speaker itself seems to work very well and has been entertaining for my 5 year old. Not sure its the best yet for home automation.

*follow-up on previous post* i love my echo plus! online store is so great. They are always so helpful and willing to work with me. No issues at all with my new device. I'm disabled and living on very limited funds. I received alexa as a gift and was very worried that i didn't have the money to replace her. Thank you online store :-). This is my 2nd device. Actually 3rd. I was visiting my sister out of state and left my echo by mistake. But she loved it so much i let her keep it and ordered me the new plus. M i s t a k e ! keeping this short. Every time. After listening music, i ask alexa to play something else like ambient sounds (windy leaves is my fav) or the fan because i it helps me sleep at night. But it would go back to playing music. I have to unplug device to get it to stop playing music. I exchanged the first plus device thinking it was just a defective device but it keeps happening with the new one as well. I will update this along with my rating after i contact tech support. Again. Btw. My first echo was wonderful! i loved it.

Echo Plus Built-in Hub Silver + Philips Hue Bulb Included
Click to see NoticeEcho Plus Built-in Hub Silver + Philips Hue Bulb Included (Electronics)"I don't have a great deal of experience in controlling wifi devices, the plus made it easy. I own 2 dots and an original echo. I have 5 smart bulbs, 2 in the master bedroom, 2 in the living room and one in the nook. On the alexa app i named them master 1/2, living 1/2 and nook. All i have to say is "alexa, living 1 on" and the bulb goes on, i can then adjust it by saying, "alexa, living 1 50%" and it dims to 50%. I also have a wemo which easily controlled with an on/off command. I have also setup group commands so i can switch on both master bedroom lights or living room lights simultaneously. I am going to by the larger bulbs for the kitchen. I was surprised to discover that i can control the light in the bedroom using the dot. . I also have a setup up on the alexa app that allows me to stream the same music simultaneously to all 4 devices, command "alexa, 70's rock everywhere. ". . I can see a bit of a learning curve in that i forget sometimes what i have named a device, so the more i add the more complicated it will become. I am adopting a consistent naming strategy, the room (ie, master bedroom, becomes master- to minimize the command requirement). I am numbering the bulbs relative to their location to the primary sitting/laying area, such that 1 is on the right and 2 left. I think if i employ a consistent naming strategy it will be easier to remember the names of the item i want to activate. . I have found the sound to be equal, or slightly better, to the original echo. The original (when they were $200 but prime members got pay $50) came with a voice remote, i was able to synch it with the plus, as that is the primary device. . I am considering a smart door lock. Does anyone have experience or input on that (i have a concern that it might be hackable)?"

Echo Dot 2nd Generation - Smart Speaker Alexa - Black (53 005166) FAQ.

Whether you just want the weather, latest sports scores or help with a math problem, alexa will help. We now have 3 in the house and will be adding two more. With a simple $3 subscription to online store's music service, you can stream almost any music you can think of by simply asking alexa for it! . Perfect work with my meidong qq chocolate bluetooth speaker, i also recommend this speaker meidong universal water resistance qqchocolate portable v4. 0 wireless bluetooth speaker with 10w dual driver and built-in microphone. And use this code for less $5: ghaqe5yf(i got it from somewhere else. ). . For the paranoid - this device is not for you. The echo dot is always listening and while the design is supposed to only listen when you say the name of the device (alexa, online store or echo - your choice), there are enough times that i hear one in another room say "sorry, i did not understand the question" to tell me it misunderstands these prompts to have been said when they weren't pretty often. . + good product support. + good voice recognition. + because of the size it doesn't stand out like a sore thumb in a room. . - doesn't differentiate between voices. If you keep it closer to a speaker than you are, then it will sometimes get confused and start picking up words from both the speaker and you when commands are given. Placement of dot is crucial for a good experience. - only supports english and german for now. - not very competent at answering general questions and you need to activate skills to expand this functionality. This makes asking question less intuitive since you then need to use commands like "alexa, ask wikipedia. ". - if you have smarthome devices named the same as internal functions, it will get confused at times. This may require renaming of the smarthome devices. -Notice from N. Gladys, Warrington

I love my echo dot! love it! did i say i love it! i use it as my timer for everything! i just say, "alexa, set the timer for 10 minutes". No having to find my phone to set one or push the buttons on my stove, which usually goes past where i want it and then i have to try and get back to where i want it. Grrrr. I just tell alexa to do it. I use it talk to my grandkids when ever i want now because i made sure they had one also. I use it to make phone calls. I used it remind me of things i need to do but can't do at the moment. I use her to keep track of my dr appointments, etc. It's interesting the things it tells me when i say good morning. I have even had an interesting "chat" with her. You can change the name to what you want. It is private and doesn't record you all day long according to their privacy agreement also. Once you learn how to say things to her, you will love it. It's getting better all the time. She's better than a secretary! she will even read to you from your books on online store. You can tell her to read a book for a half an hour and she will, so if you go to sleep, you don't have to shut it off. You can play your favorite music by just asking her to. No trying to find your phone and looking it up. I have reordered things from my online store account several times. I have asked what prices are on things without getting my computer out. It's such a time saver! when i have an appointment that day, i will say "alexa, set the alarm for 10:15 am. " the alarm goes off and i know i have to leave. I don't lose track of time. I ask her weather. I ask her the time. I ask her what my schedule is for the day, etc. I love it! i don't want to live without this bot again! lol

- D. CageenI love the echo dot and alexa. It's really fun and useful. It was very easy and straight forward to set it up. It takes some trial and error to figure out what it can do and the correct way to phrase things. I love that i can set reminders for things by talking to it, set alarms and timers, have it play my online store music and ask it questions or play games. My only complaint is that it's not made to hold a charge so it has to be plugged in all the time making it a pain to move it from different locations or rooms (probably on purpose so you'll buy more dots - hence 3 packs and 6 packs). The speaker is good enough but if you'll be using it for music a lot you'll probably want to connect it to a bigger and better speaker or get the full echo with the better speaker attached. They also sell wireless speakers that are also charging docks to make the dot more portable which is probably the route that i'll go.

Let me start out by saying that i already have a google home, so my review of the echo dot will be through the lens of the comparing the two. And yes i know that that the home should be compared to the regular echo, but i think the dot is very similar to the regular echo dot anyway so it will be fine for this review. In each category i will give a winner and explain. . Voice recognition: echo dot. While i think that the google home has okay microphones, i certainly think that the dot picks up my voice easier. Sometimes i have to scream at the home just to get it to recognize my voice. It is also much easier for the dot because you only have to say alexa. However, a consequence of this is that the dot will randomly start recording more often as it only requires one wake word vs two on the google home. The dot is also better at picking up your voice when there is a lot of background noise or music. . Build quality: google home. Now this is a bit subjective, but i just prefer the sleek look of the home versus the look of the dot. This is also because i prefer the matte finish of the home versus the very shiny finish of the dot. In my opinion the shiny look makes it look cheaper. However, the dot is built fine, and i do like how there are many different physical buttons. I really appreciate the button to start recording, and that is a feature i wish the home had. . Voice assistant/smart home connectivity: depends. I do not use any smart home features so i cannot speak to that functionality. However, google is more useful to me as an assistant. I use google play music, listen to music on youtube, and use a chromecast and those are all exclusive things to the home. The echo dot pulls music from the online store service, which while it has a lot of music, can't hold a candle to the millions upon millions of songs on the google play music store and youtube. The google home also does a better job with search inquiries, however, they both still have a long way to go to be more useful than just looking it up on your phone. However, the echo dot does have way more skills than the google home. If you like having a lot of features like that, then the dot is for you. However, if you need google compatibility and don't care about having tons of random features, the dot is not for you. . Sound quality: home, unless you have a standalone speaker to connect with the dot. Obviously the home sounds better, almost solely because of its size. However i actually think the dot sounds fine by itself for most things, but i prefer my music to be played quietly. For most songs i keep the home at like 10-20% volume. Only certain songs are very quiet and require me to push it like 30-40%. However the dot can be connected to a different speaker and that varies widely. Obviously if you connect it to a nice bose speaker, it will sound better than the home. But i would certainly only connect it to something halfway decent. Don't pick up some crappy $5 speaker you picked up at the checkout line at wal-mart. It's not worth your time as the dot sounds fine for most things. . Overall usefulness: i personally couldn't use just the echo dot. I simply need more music than the dot can provide me with and like the compatibility with chromecasts. And i prefer the look of the home anyway. However, i do appreciate the value that the dot provides at around $38 on sale, including tax. I do believe that it is an amazing value and would fit well in most houses or even businesses. I also like how the dots can call each other, i think that is a very useful feature in big houses. I also like its connection with online store and that you can buy stuff from it and get special deals. . I honestly think most families would benefit from having a few of these lying around in the house, and given the price, it won't hurt the bank account too much.

Echo 2nd Generation - Smart speaker Alexa - Charcoal Fabric

I received this on christmas and love it! i didn't think much any of the home devices but after getting this, i totally see the utility in it. . I've already purchased two smart plugs to control a couple of lamps and bought an echo dot for a bedroom. I've been using routines, reminders and alarm clocks. I was already a prime member so i've been using a couple of features with that. . That commercial where your control your firestick from the echo? yeah, it really works! . . If you already are a prime member, have purchased music or have a firestick, get the echo.

Generation Improved Sound Powered Design (53 006466) FAQ.

This was our way of dipping our toe in the home-assistant pool. We are pretty impressed with how well alexa responds to commands. We use our little network of echos and echo dots to control everything from our security system to our insteon smart switches and lighting and it works great. In my opinion, if you are a prime member this is the home-assistant for you. I am also a prime music member, which adds another element of usefulness. A few things we use it for:. . - listening to whole-house music "alexa play music by budos band everywhere" and there you have it, all of the echos are playing the same music! . - turning our smart home lighting on and off. - it's our alarm clock. We finally ditched the horrible sounding and looking 30 year old alarm clock. - alexa "how many cups are in a quart? " instant answer! . - "alexa, ask harmony to turn the tv on". - building a shopping list when you run out of things, instead of trying to remember what you need later in the week "alexa, add 13 gallon trash bags to my shopping cart". . The sound from the echo is pretty good too. I wouldn't use it to replace a good stereo receiver with speakers, but when i just want some background music while i'm working around the house, it's great! i plan to buy a couple more echos in the future. -Notice from H. These gadgets are pretty nice. I've heard some negative reviews for sound which are completely erroneous. These are not a whole home audiophile sound system and are not intended as such, that said they sound amazing for what small cheap little speakers are in them. While not as good as my home theater i do use them while working/cleaning around the house since i have my music everywhere and no matter where i go i can hear it. Connectivity was a snap since they come pre-paired to my account. All i had to do was set them up on my wifi which took a minute each. I have had 1 issue with multiple echos responding to voice commands but have since taken care of that by subtile rearrangement of them. I use the "drop in" whole home intercom system a lot. I'm waiting for more functionality in the fire tv skill. While it is not supported according to online store i did get my echo to stream music to my fire tv once and it sounded amazing over my home theater system. I wish i could replicate this (probably a one time glitch). Can't wait to see what software updates unlock for these in the future.

- C. MaryThe 2nd generation echo is about the equivalent as the original version, accept i liked the way the older one had a volume control wheel at the top. The new one only has up and down buttons, which you can't see if you have your echo setting on a shelf higher than your shoulders. With the original version, if you want to raise the volume you can simply reach up and twist the top one way or the other. With the new one i have to ask alexa to raise or lower the volume, which takes a few iterations before you get the volume at the level you want. If it were me, and the 1st generation echo's were still available, i would buy one of those before i bought one of these new ones.

We already owned an echo dot, purchased last year. Since we use it as a music player nearly 100% of the time, i jumped at the chance to try a unit with "improved sound. " is it true? yes! the 2nd generation echo has waaaay better sound than the original dot - more even frequency response and dramatically improved bass. I didn't do a strict comparison but the amplifier in the echo likely has higher output, too, although the dot is able to play loudly enough for casual listening, with similar quality to a portable radio. We normally pair the dot with external bluetooth speakers (or a bluetooth input on a full-size audio amplifier) for higher-quality sound. This echo can stand on its own, in terms of quality, and doesn't need those externals to sound good. We also have online store music service, and were surprised to learn that the subscription is tied to the dot itself rather than to our household. Extending it to the new echo costs extra money.

The F.A.Q. for Echo Plus Built-in Hub Silver + Philips Hue Bulb Included (Electronics)

There are many excellent reviews of the new echo plus here, so this review is from the pov of someone with limited connection infrastructure, e. G. , very rural area, no internet or cable, only satellite service offered, but no signal due to heavy tree cover, beginner smart home user. I never dreamed an echo would work for me, much less the echo plus or smart home. I broke down & purchased an echo on prime day june, 2017 just to try. I receive my internet service solely through an at&t velocity hotspot device, typically with only 1 bar of service. I was so excited that the echo worked perfectly & decided to go out on another limb, purchasing the echo plus w/included hue bulb on cyber monday, as well as a fire tv stick, figuring i was really pushing the envelope that any would work. All devices worked perfectly! i now have the meager beginnings of a smart home as well as alexa functionality. I can't tell you how surprised i am! there is an 8-device limit for the hotspot, so wi-fi smart devices are out of the question for me & not sure i have enough signal for any to work anyway. Using the echo plus as my only hub, the included hue bulb connected in seconds, while also tying in with my 1st echo. So i can use either of the 2 echos to control the light bulb, connected to a lamp in my living room. What is ideal for my situation is that the hue bulb does not "count" as a wi-fi device, so does not go toward my device count/limit on the hotspot. Apparently, it is connected directly to the echo plus hub. Currently, with one bar of hotspot service, i'm running the echo plus, echo, fire tablet, fire tv stick & galaxy express 3 cell, & every now & then, an echo tap-all at one time with excellent results! everything works as if i have hard wired cable or internet, which is simply amazing. Movies, music, etc. Run flawlessly. Alexa - i don't have a lot of space on my cell, so all i need is the alexa app to control the bulb when away from home, no need for a separate app and i already have the alexa app on my tablet & of course, use alexa on both echo's & a tap. Smart home - the echo plus has opened up the smart home market for me. Although it appears limited to the zigbee iot protcol, the available choices are varied enough that there are switches, more bulbs, door locks & plugs i'll be able to use now. This thing just came out, so as time goes by, i'm sure more & more skills & iot stuff will become available. I'm sure the folks at online store will make improvements to capabilities as well. And i can do it all with just 1 echo plus - no need for additional hubs or devices with my limited internet! . Sound - i found my 1st echo sound pretty decent. I am by no means an audiophile, but imho echo plus sound greatly improved over the echo. Much richer, more robust & much better bass - yay! my 1st echo sounds "tinny" now, compared to the echo plus. I am beyond delighted with the performance of the echo plus & kudos to online store for this "upgrade" to the echo. I would highly recommend the echo plus, especially for those just entering the smart home market with internet challenges. I love my echo plus!

Update: after posting my review, i was contacted by online store echo tech. Support who wanted to help me through the problems i was having with my echo plus. After some time, we came to the conclusion that my device was in fact a defective/damaged unit. They made good on this by replacing my device with a new one and their engineering support team will disassemble my device to try and make sure it doesn't happen in the future. The new device works much better and i am very pleased with it. Any glitches that are still present i am confident will be addressed by future software patches such as the sound quality patch they pushed shortly after releasing to the public. I am very impressed with online store's customer support and by the fact that the initiated the customer service call. . Very disappointed with this 'updated' version of the echo. I had the first gen echo and i wish i still did. Smart hub capabilities are a joke because you still need to rely on the 3rd party bridges/hubs to fully utilize the technology. I have been experiencing a lot of lag in commands and many other issues. Below are some of my issues with a bit more detail. . 1. About half of the time when i give it a command it continues listening for about 10 more seconds after i stop talking (not due to background noise). After it does this only sometimes does it actually execute the command, other times is just times out. On the flip side i have also had it talk to me without being prompted and answer a question i directed to my wife. (whose name sounds nothing like alexa). 2. I had a very aggravating issue when i set a timer. Once the timer started to go off, it would not turn off. Multiple people tried a varied amount of commands but in the end i had to physically unplug the echo to make it stop. I plugged it back in after about 5 minutes and the timer alarm started going off again. Only when i left it unplugged for over an hour did it stop which was extremely inconvenient because i was using it as a speaker at the time while i cooked dinner. 3. My mom also bought the new echo plus and she is having a problem playing online store prime music. It will prompt "now shuffling music from band (whatever she asked for. Same selection of bands used to work on her old echo)" and then just never plays the music. 4. The biggest upset of all is its capabilities with the built in smart home hub. This is the main reason i upgraded from my old echo to the new echo plus. No where does online store disclose that to fully utilize the phillips hue bulbs (which they are selling it with! ) you still need the bridge/hub from phillips. When using hue bulbs you can turn them on/off and dim using the echo plus built in hub, if you want to change the colors (which is the whole point of the bulbs) you need the phillips hub too. If that is the case then why did i spend $50 more on the echo plus with built in smart hub when i still need another hub! . . If i were to do it over again, i would keep my original echo that never gave me issues and did everything i asked it to. Very disappointed after anxiously waiting for this upgraded device.

I ordered the echo plus to go along with the original echo. I decided upon the plus because i use a lot of philips hue lights in the home and thought it would be convenient to have the hub. This works just like the original echo, but with better sound and it quickly and easily discovers your devices. . After setting it up, however, i began to have a ton of problems with my lights/groups not working, etc. After contacting customer service, i was told that i should have gotten the echo second generation because the plus can not work with the phillips hue hub (which i still wanted to use since it has more features than the echo plus hub). I also had a list of lights in the alexa app that i disabled, but could not "forget" within the app and it showed i had over 200 lights connected. Which i did not (very frustrating and it became a big mess). . During all of this, i was contacted by another rep who had a higher level of understanding of how the echo plus works. In short, you can use this with the phillips hue hub, you just can't connect your lights to both hubs. The error was in my set up; not the device itself. The representative walked me through the set up process again and also told me about the web based version of the original alexa app, which allowed me to forget the 200 disabled lights in my app (just google alexa web app)! . . In the end, the product is great. It easily connects, has great sound, and you can also connect your phone via bluetooth to play music or podcasts. I am going to exchange it for the second generation, however, because it will save money as i do not want to use the hub.

I bought this thinking that at a minimum the value for money would be good if it served only as a bluetooth speaker. Well, it exceeded our expectations as set up was very easy, alexa understands our non-american english speaking accent, alexa's serves as a go to source for facts and info for all family members, never a need to touch the device as alexa always responds to her name called, home automation integration was easy with my idevices and apple tv homekit (not sure about other devices integration), streams mu ipad and iphone content, and it serves as a very good music player for online store prime music. . Things i'd like to see added: more support for streaming local radio that are already on the internet, a small digital backlit display to help indicate what content is playing - a simple menu of sorts, ability to have alexa ignore her name such as when there is a side conversation or mention on a nearby tv or radio ad (that interferes with alexa's streaming as she stops the music and listens - thinking someone is asking her a question), a better fuller/richer "bose" like sound, and a battery pack for short wireless use and back up.

As a long-time user of many echos and echo dots, and a long-time user of insteon smarthome lighting stuff from within the alexa ecosystem, i was anxious to get my hands on the new echo plus with built-in zigbee hub. Here is my review so far after checking it out for a few days. I bought the kit with the single philips hue white bulb, so that's all i was testing it with. . This is mostly a review of both the echo plus *and* the bulb, since most everyone knows how awesome a basic echo is by now. . Some good stuff:. . - there is no 3rd party smartphone app needed for the light. All the initial config, and subsequent management, takes place through the alexa app on your phone. . - initial config was mind-blowingly simple. I screwed in the light so it was powered up, and told the alexa app to discover devices. It came back and said "found new bulb 1" and that was that. After that, i could rename it, adjust it, turn it off and on, etc. Via the alexa app. . - voice control was a no-brainer. On/off, set to x%, etc. Brighten/dim also worked but seemed to jump by pretty large steps, like 50% to 75% as far as i could tell. . - you can definitely create "groups" of lights. . - you can definitely create lighting schedules through the "routines" in the alexa app (which, by the way, could also be programmed to start/stop music at certain times? ! did not know that. ). . - you can definitely use the alexa app to check status & control the lights even when away from home. . - because it's zigbee, and unlike setting up wifi bulbs such as the tp-link bulbs, initial config doesn't require "breaking" the current wifi connection. That makes it easier for me to remote-control or remotely view the smartphone screens of my friends and family to help troubleshoot their lighting setups remotely. . - the affordable white philips hue "60 watt" bulb that came with my purchase is a great bulb, with virtual 360 degree light shine and a pleasant, warm-type of glow. I mean it really looks white, not amber or anything, don't get me wrong, but it is very pleasant, smooth white light. . Now for a few caveats. . - the "routines" in the alexa app only recognize time of day as a trigger - not, say, sunrise or sunset. Hopefully they will enhance this in the near future because obviously we'd like to set lighting schedules by sunrise/sunset (as well as sunset minus x minutes, etc). . - the light bulb, being dimmable, doesn't work quite so well if it's also attached to a dimmer. I put mine in a torchiere light that has a dimmer (all the way up, of course) and the bulb looks fine & normal at full or near-full intensity, but had a slight, annoying flicker at lower intensities. This is to be expected, i guess, since most dimmers screw with the power transmission "downstream" a bit, even when on 100%. Note: if the bulb is in a normal on/off lamp with no dimmer, there is no flickering problem at all. . -the light bulb remembers its last intensity when you turn it back on. Although this is generally a good thing, there is a downside: if the last intensity was 100%, and you say "alexa, set bulb 1 to 20%", the bulb will (very briefly) come on at 100% before quickly readjusting to the requested 20%. Slightly annoying but by no means a showstopper. . - the bulb is not infinitely dimmable; it bottoms out at about 2-3%, for a level that i would say is a bright nightlight. So, there's no going down to pure candlelight levels. . - white bulbs are quite affordable. However philips hue full-color bulbs are crazy expensive; hope they will drop in price soon. Didn't have a full-color bulb to play with so i can't confirm how well the alexa app controls the hue changes. . And now for some non-smarthome observations:. . - although sound quality is supposed to be better on the echo plus than the echo, to my ears they sound very similar so don't expect to hear too much improvement, if any. I could maybe tell a bit better treble presence. I'm not a heavy bass guy so i don't know if it handles deep bass better. On the music i normally listen to, i did an a/b test and really couldn't discern an improvement worth noting. Of much greater importance to the sound is where you place it - i have an echo next to a hollow drywall wall, and it sounds way huger (due to the sympathetic vibrations/resonance) than another echo that is next to a cement block wall. . - major disappointment, which is why i'm giving it four stars instead of five: the new aux port is pretty stupid, in that when you plug something into it, it disables the internal speaker. To me, whether we wanted the internal speaker disabled should've been controllable via an app setting. I looked, and could find no such app setting. What i was hoping to do was plug it into my stereo, but still use the internal speaker when the stereo was off. Well too bad, no dice. In addition to turning the stereo on & off manually, i would also have to plug & unplug the aux cable manually. That's just dumb. Essentially, using the aux port turns this pricey device into a glorified "dot". What's the point? i'd be better off using a separate dot connected to my stereo. Perhaps this is fixable in a firmware upgrade? . . That's it. Short version: absolutely do get the echo plus if you want to get started with zigbee-style smarthome stuff and don't want to mess with a separate hub and separate smartphone app - it should work great!

First let me state i received the kit with bulb and plug for christmas and the price was great, before the new year. I thought about purchasing or asking for this for some time. Now that i have it, i really like it. And it will take time to find out everything it can do. I feel it works far better than siri and i love my apple products. I had to change names using att wifi even though att says not to in order for echo plus to work with wifi. Just bought an echo dot before price increase and have it in kitchen for mostly voice commands, since speakers are weak. But it can attach to a bluetooth speaker which is great. The echo plus has discovered the phillips bulb easily and works perfectly! . The echo plus sounds really good. You won't see a "verified purchase" with my review because i received it as a gift.

G. Ross, Brandenburg

I think this is a great product if you don't expect it to have movie-futuristic features. You have to use the wake word to have any one command work (you can choose from four wake words: alexa, echo, computer and online store. Cannot customize it to any other wake word). I use it to control my lights with phillips smart white bulbs. I later found out that i only needed the plain echo and could have simply used smart plugs to control all my lights and never needed to buy smart bulbs but this is all new territory for me - so it's been trial and error. So i've since added two smart plugs in the mix and i have to say, being able to voice control lights is an awesome feature. Actually, it's the best feature of the echo devices. . I don't use the device for too much else yet (shopping list - great skill in alexa's app; find my phone - another great skill but pretty basic. I do not like the trackr app that everyone is raving about and the reason for this is i'm not crazy about the fact that when you use the 3rd party skills, you can't just ask alexa to do the task of the skill. I believe for all or most of them you have to command it to use it by saying the skill name, so i feel like it's not as natural a request as using a basic skill already built into the alexa app and it's just something else you have to remember. But there are a ton of outside developer skills to enable - you just have to find the ones that work best for you). I think a lot of the skills are silly and gimmicky so i'm still on the hunt for some practical skills that i'll get non-silly use out of. . But back to the device itself: the echo plus is a great sounding speaker. Plays ambient sounds very nice - you can tell alexa to "loop on" and it will play endlessly. Sound is better than a portable ambient noise device. You don't have to have online store prime music to listen to tunes. You can sync your pandora or iheartradio accounts with it and make either one of them your default music player. I'm sure having prime makes the device much more worthwhile. But even without prime i was still able to track my online store delivery so that's pretty cool. . There are some hiccups in her voice recognition. Sometimes you have to slow down your speech, sometimes you have to reword the question, so you have to learn to work with her capabilities and limitations and don't expect star trek features. But she's still a lot of fun to chat with when you're bored, try a few games on, check weather. She runs on the bing search engine so some may find her search capabilities lacking but it's ok for what i ask her. . You can set up routines to have her perform certain skills at one time in a certain order you set them up (like you can create a routine called good morning and she'll then start to do whatever you programmed it to do within skills. I'm not sure how many skills you can add to any one routine as i haven't used this feature yet but some people go nuts with it). You have to do your research and join message boards (there are some groups to join on fb where everyone is very helpful) and ask others for help and ideas on how to get the maximum use out of her. Overall, i'm happy with it!

First i want to say that a novice in networking "could" potentially have trouble getting everything set up initially. If you plug in the echo plus and get on a pc at alexa. Online store. Com, click settings, click set up a new device and follow the instructions, it should install and connect to your online store account. Be sure to have your wifi password. I also got 2 philips hue light bulbs to play with. I put one in a hallway lamp and one in a tv room lamp. Leave the lamps turned on. Say, "alexa, discover devices". She should find them in a few seconds - once discovered, they should show up at alexa. Online store. Com. Create a group(s) and give the group a name like "hallway", "bedroom", etc. And assign the light bulbs to the group. You can then say, "alexa, turn on hallway", or "bedroom". You could do the same thing with alexa compatible electrical outlet adapters, with lamps plugged in to them and you could use standard led or other light bulbs. You don't need the philips or other 3rd party apps to use alexa controlled devices "inside" the home. The apps are needed only if you plan to control the devices while outside of the home network. The echo plus has a builtin smart home hub that talks to all the alexa controlled devices. Without the builtin hub, you would need a 3rd party hub from philips or other manufacturer. The echo plus has a good bass sound and as far as my ears can tell, rocks out 80's heavy metal just fine ! . There are a ton of skills and features i haven't had time to delve in to. I will grow my smart home for sure. One simple thing to do is say alexa, " add popcorn to my shopping list". Put the alexa app on your smart phone and you can pull up the shopping list when out and about without the need for paper and all that. . Enjoy !

Please see update below original review . . I bought the original echo when it was first available for pre-order and have loved it. No issues. The opposite is the case with echo plus. . Doesn't understand me half the time. Intermittent success using the remote. Tried multiple times setting up groups to play music simultaneously in different rooms using it with my 2 echo dots and original echo. Echo plus responds by doing nothing, or playing a random song or stations, and nothing on the other units in the group. . I really hate returning things, but unless there are fixes in updates between now and the end of the return period, that's what i'll be doing. Seriously disappointed. Oh, and i called online store "help" so-called, and i knew more about how it works than the person i wasted 15 minutes on the phone with. It was a surreal convo. . Update: this morning i got a call from anthony, from online store customer service. First, i was blown away that they would call me to address my issues with echo plus. Second, he was knowledgeable, and in no hurry. While it remains to be seen whether every issue with ep is fixed, the problem with groups was. . It turns out that alexa didn't like the name i gave my group, it was that simple. My original echo is black, my ep is white, so i called the group "black and white". Suggestion: when setting up your groups, go with one of the suggested generic names-bedroom, living room, etc. Echo calls them "common names". I called mine "backyard", even though my backyard isn't involved. . Regarding alexa often not understanding me on the ep, anthony suggested that i try switching from british english to american english. I'm going to try that, although i have used british english on my original echo with no issues. . So, i've upgraded my review to 4 stars, and when and if all issues are resolved i'll be coming back to make it 5. Online store support definitely gets 5 stars. Even though my first call was a disaster, the way they followed up was remarkable, and that's the important thing. Seriously impressed. Thank you, anthony!

Overall it's a great product i only see getting better. I'm not an audiophile but we love the sound quality for background music. We use online store music with it which is pretty easy self-explanatory and has a wide variety of options. It's pretty entertaining at times and its good for things like reading audible books, controlling the lights, and telling me the weather in the morning. . A few complaints. 1. We have two of these and although they are supposed to work together so only the closest one responds, they would usually both respond. In fact, even if we were across the apartment from one, it was like one would signal the other and they'd both respond. We had to give one a different wake word. Now we run around talking to alexa, echo, and siri when we're home and it gets a little stupid. 2. Fix the volume situation. Add a button or do something. I shouldn't have to spend 45 seconds waking alexa and requesting incremental adjustments over and over again until it gets to the desired level. Let me give it a percentage or something. 3. Fix the app. It's cluttered and confusing and only half works.

Am redoing my review and giving it 4 starts instead of my original 1 start. At first i couldn't get the echo plus to work with my nest but then realized i needed to add the skill. After that it worked great. Also tried the philips hue bulb that came with it. Worked great as well. Only reason i'm not giving 5 stars is because i bought a very expensive schlage keyless entry because it was advertised to work with alexa. It doesn't. Apparently schlage connect requires z-wave, which alex doesn't have so this is my official request to online store. Make the echo plus receive z-wave as well as zigbee. Just don't make me have to buy another one if you make the upgrade.

I had set up an echo for some friends a week ago. I feel i am very tech savvy, and felt i could do it in a snap. It took 2 hours, and i thought it was because they had attempted to set it up via 3 devices, telephone, laptop and ipad. I was very impressed once it was set up and decided to purchase the echo plus for myself along with a phillips hue light bulb. Well, it took me friday evening and sunday to get it set up. I tried my cell phone, an htc 10, only a year old. I tried my fire 8. 9 hdx tablet. I tried my laptop, an asus that is a year old running windows 10. I had to continuously reboot my modem/router to get it to set up, reset the echo plus a multitude of times and downloaded and deleted the alexa app repeatedly on all devices. I finally got it running and feel like i should open a bottle of champagne or something to celebrate. I really like the device, and the fact i can control lights and other things around the house by my voice. It has a really great sound quality, and i'm comparing it to my bose wave ipod system. I'm in the process of transferring my itunes library to the online store music app. I would have given it 5 stars but for the fact that i had to keep going online to figure the set up out. I feel there really should be a support number for contact. I am praying i don't lose power or anything causes it to be reset and i have to go through setup again!

I don't know what everyone's talking about. But my echo plus discovered my devices instantly. All i did was say the a word discover devices. Boom light bulb smart thermostat found. I've also ordered more philips hue bulbs to surround my house with the echo plus. In my opinion it's awesome. It's loud it's attractive it's a smart hub without having to purchase a hub and it discovers devices easily. So everyone who says otherwise they must not know what they are doing. I haven't linked up the multi-room function to have music play out your home. Or specify what room you want the music to play in. It linked up to my account easily hassle free. By this device it's worth it. I have 3 fire sticks of fire tv box an echo and an echo plus they all link together and work seamlessly

I work in "cybersecurity" and to be honest i avoided products like the echo and their kin due to privacy/security concerns. However, after discovering online store now has the option of enabling two-factor-authentication for accounts (i opted to use my google authenticator app), and pin secured purchasing for voice commands. I decided to give it a try. So i purchased it, and it came the next day (no joke, like 26 hours later it was in my hands). . My echo plus was extremely easy and quick to setup (i had preloaded the alexa app on my phone, so i was ready to go once it arrived). So, here's the part where i was expecting to hate life. Adding the philips light-bulb. I figured it was going to fail several times, not discover it, just all in all be difficult. But it wasn't. I literally told alexa to discover my devices. And it found the light, added it. And that was it! btw, telling alexa to "dim my first light to 50%" or "brighten my first light to 100%" is pretty darn cool. . I think the product is great, my kids love asking it questions (it understands my 4 year old perfectly, even when she has a stutter or changes the question mid sentence). I would recommend this product to anyone (provided you enable your 2fa and pin'ing. Which you should really be doing with every online service you use)

Review after 5 days:. . Pro: performs same basic functions as philips hue and ge wink hubs. Con: does not perform all functions. Cannot create scenes, cannot set sunrise/sunset timers, and third-party apps that rely on hue hub will not work once you disconnect that hub. . Pro: changes color of lights for hue bulbs with voice. If you only had hue hub gen. 1, this will be a new feature for you. If you had hue hub gen. 2, this is not a new feature. This is the primary reason i bought the echo plus. Con: apple home kit will still require hue hub gen. 2. Apple does not recognize online store devices. . Pro: controls all of my hue and wink bulbs and allowed me to disconnect those hubs. Con: set up is a huge pain. I might be overly complicated for someone new to alexa. The bulbs you own will already be paired to their respective hubs. Simply disconnecting the hubs does not allow echo plus to take over. You have to reset each bulb. Since online store advertises seamless and easy setup, this was a surprise and made me think i was doing something wrong. Setup took 1. 75 hours for me. You have to look hard for instructions for your unique devices. The instructions are in the alexa app. . Pro: faster response time for ge wink bulbs. Previously would take up to 15 seconds for these bulbs to respond, now it s instant just like hub bulbs have always been. Con: none, this is a great and unexpected feature. Wink bulbs are much cheaper, and i assumed that s why they were always slower. Nice that they have instant response now. . Pro: amazingly strong microphones, will hear a whisper even if it is playing loud music. Echo dot (or any other echo) can do this, but echo plus ability is impressive. Echo dot did not do a good job of canceling out its own music. Con: it can hear you over loud music only if echo is playing this music. Loud ambient sounds or music playing from some other speaker will prevent alexa from responding to your commands. Online store is well aware of this issue, and they now sell an alexa-enabled remote control to use during this situations. I also own the online store dash wand (for the food delivery service), and it can be used to do the same. Of course, if you have to press a button on these remotes, then it s no longer truly voice activated. . Pro: multi-room music plays in sync if you have multiple echo devices. It also creates a home intercom system with the drop in feature. Con: none, this is a cool thing. But these functions are available on all echo devices, including the dot that is 1/3 the price. . Pro: if you order now, online store is giving you a free philips hue bulb. Con: even though it s free, it s an ugly, cheap-looking bulb. It s not sleek glass like my other hue bulbs. It s frosted plastic. But then again, it s free. You have to make sure the version you are ordering comes with the bulb. Both versions are the same price, and you might accidentally order the wrong one without the bulb. . Conclusion: terribly complicated set up. Expensive device that does the same as cheaper echo dot with the exception of the internal hub. The internal hub will replace some features of your zigbee-enabled smart home devices, but will not give the full range of features you re used to with their native hubs. Subjectively, i think the device is ugly. The other echo products have more pleasing proportions.

It was advertised to sound better than the original echo, it does not . Still anemic when it comes to base. Update. Sound much improved with the latest firmware. Thank you , it now works as expected.

When i received this echo plus in the mail i noticed there was a small crack around the light ring. Now i could have kept it and used it with the crack, it really was small, but online store is such an amazing company that they sent a replacement that same day! so awesome! . . I spent the next hour deciding where i could best use the philips hue lightbulb and tp-link plug i purchased with the echo plus on cyber monday. After the initial set up of the above mentioned accessories, the time to play with said accessories was about to begin. . Now, if you haven't tried your hand at smart home automation, there is a bit of an expense that will be required to start. You can buy a wide variety of smart home hubs here on online store, but i would suggest you buy the echo plus. With the philips hub built in, its the best price imo. Once you have decided which you'll be purchasing, you'll then need to purchase the required accessories. Again, online store has plenty to chose from. . I would strongly recommend this product!

We received our echo plus as a gift. I still have not found how to "register" it, cannot get it to stay connected to the internet, it won't connect to the wifi through my phone. Absolute constant setup problems. I tried resetting it, unplugging it, etc. Will be looking into returning ours. Disappointed. . *update*. 1* to 4*. I later figured out it was an iphone 5c alexa app problem, not the actual device. I set it up through my laptop after hitting the reset button and playing with the wifi. It is now working. Disappointed that it says we can use spotify and iheart radio, but it turns out it can only connect to the premium versions. But at least it connects to pandora and the light bulb thing is pretty cool! i also experimented with the call feature and volume up down. Pretty neat now that we are getting it setup!

I'm very pleased with my echo plus and the things i am able to get alexa to do through it, but i'm hopeful that many new skills and features will be added in the near future. I realize this is a newer market and it will take a bit before all kinds of innovative and creative functions can be added. For now, i'm satisfied with asking alexa to turn my house lights/lamps on and off through my tp-link smart plugs and phillips hue light bulbs (all incredibly easy to install through the echo plus). Some other features i enjoy are the voice commands to control my music through online store prime or other paired speakers. I like how it seamlessly connects through bluetooth to my lg sj9 soundbar and subwoofer by just saying, "alexa, pair speakers. " i can't wait until there's a better and quicker way to control the tv. I currently use the "quick remote" app, but it's very command specific and fire tv apparently is still not as fast based on the few youtube video demonstrations i've watched. I can order online store products and with the correct enabled skills, groceries too. Besides asking alexa to answer many different questions through my echo (ie. Weather, time, date, to do lists, places nearby, directions, miles to locations from home, etc. ), i can connect it to my new macbook. . The product itself looks good in any room and is easy to set up straight out of the box. I like the lights on the upper portion which are a nice touch carried over from the original design and will light upon calling alexa letting you know she's listening and waiting on a command. The speaker sounds great for the price and i sometimes ask alexa to make phone calls for me (ie. When doing dishes). The audio for the calls is usually good. The echo's volume may be turned up or down either by voice command or by turning the upper portion of the cylinder to the left (l loud) or to the right to turn it down. The speakers on the echo plus are significantly better than the 2nd generation echo dot which i also purchased. I own some bose portable speakers i paid $250 and for the price of the echo plus, the sound quality is pretty good with the bose beating them by a bit as there's a better base sound. . The echo dot 2nd generation can play the same music station as the echo plus at the same time in different rooms or they can individually play different stations and do different things. Having multiple echos allows one to use them as an intercom between different rooms. I like that option, but have not tried it, because i have to change the name of one of the devices and i really like saying 'alexa. ' overall, the possibilities are endless with the echo plus as more products are created in the tech market to function in unison with the echo. There are endless things i can do with this device, but this review would be even lengthier. There are quite a few random youtube videos if more information is needed on the product. I recommend this product completely and can't wait to see the next steps in its development so i can further benefit from its use and future skills!

The echo part is just as good as the 1st gen. The speak is "better" they tell me, but not significantly. Honestly, i bought as a replacement for a 1st gen full size echo because i liked the silver color most of all, and not a fan of the new shorter "clothy" covering on the non-plus echos. We got this as an upgrade so we could downcycle our launch echo to the teenager's room rather than get her a 2nd gen echo. The addition of the hub was at first a plus (no pun intended) but turned out to be largely useless beyond super simple operations. Most of the smart switches are moving to a non-hub/just wifi model, and they all connect via skills to alexa without the hub. The internal hub is fine for the most basic on/off, some brightness controls of the hue lights, but anything beyond that (including any of the hue apps) requires a bridge or hub device. None of the dozen apps i tried could detect the alexa hub as a hue bridge device, so could not interface with it for "fancy" lighting effects like color cycling. The current alexa app interface for the lighting is clumsy and does not support colors as part of triggers or timers, only manual, so thats annoying (but software is fixable). . Overall, if you are already in the echo life, this is a good upgrade over a 1st gen. I would not get this plus over a non-plus as your first device. If you want to dip your toes into the smart bulb life, this is a good start, just know it wont save you from getting a proper hub/bridge/box later when you want to do grownup stuff.

This is a great product, and if it was my first and only echo, i probably would have given it 5 stars. I have an online store echo 1st generation and i really like it. I was expecting a lot better sound out of the 2nd generation echo, but the sound isn't that much better than the 1st generation echo. So in my little opinion, if you have a 1st generation echo, and you don't need the hub, stick with your 1st generation, the sound is the same. . If this is your first echo, this is a great product because it has a built in hub, saving you the extra step of having to purchase the external hub to control lights, tv, appliances, etc.

P. Valencia, Milton Keynes

I m surprised to see the mixed reviews. The primary reasons i bought echo plus instead of the standard version were improved audio quality and integrated smart home functionality. I ve been holding out on smart home products because i don t want extra hubs in my house. Online store has the right approach here and i was able to easily setup 10+ lights and several smart outlets from different vendors and it all worked brilliantly. The performance of the zigbee lights is exceptional; they are very responsive. . Many of the customers complaining about the echo plus appear to be advanced smart home hobbyists expecting the same or better feature set as they have on other more mature smart home platforms. I m hapoy to see online store focus on simplicity and ease of use and expect they will continue to build our functionality over time. Great first impressions and i can t wait to see what updates online store brings in upcoming software and app updates. . My feature wishlist:. 1) color lighting control from within the app. 2) support for more device types including sensors. 3) integration with a camera + fire tv for home monitoring ( show me the nursery on my living room tv ). 4) more advanced rules and conditions - for example, changing the color of a light based on some other sensor data or trigger event like geo-location of a smart phone (i. E. Increase the brightness of a light the closer i get to home so my family can tell when i m close, change the color of a light based on stock price, etc)

This is the first echo product in our household; we got it for christmas and bought echo dots to go in each room. I love the echo plus. Yes it s creepy at times, yes alexa turns on and asks random questions which has my husband and i staring wide eyed talking about online store monitoring our household but she s so cool! here are a few things . . Music. - i love this, with prime we get most music, though some (like space jam) is only for purchase. - love the playlists (especially classical focus in the morning) but, but there should be more options. Some of the playlists only have 5 songs. Also i feel like alexa should remember what song you left off on so you don t have to start at the beginning of the play list again. - i wish they had radio stations for alexa (not adding a premium spotify account and using their radio stations) i know some local stations have it, but i d love to have a classical station that can be played continuously, not with the same songs, or a 90s station that doesn t have the same songs. . Audiobooks/audible. - i love that it connects to my audible account but there s sometimes still lag in where i left off on the book, either on alexa or my phone, and then switching back. - you can t stream your audiobook on a group, just one echo dot or alexa, this is lame when i m doing housework i have to still play it on my phone since i can t listen on a group. . Groups. - i love that my entire household is a group, during the holidays (we opened it early sorry dad! ) we had holiday music playing on every echo/alexa and it was awesome. - it sucks you can only have one group. I d love to have a household group, an upstairs group and a downstairs group; this should be doable with the technology. - we can t i play my audio book on a group? . . Alexa add ons. - i love the phillips light that is voice controlled, sometimes though alexa has a hard time hearing the colors we want. Like yellow? . - the dimmable philips light bulb sometimes flickers when it s dimmed bellowed 50%. - the plugs we got are a bit bulky, and when we used it with our christmas tree, we still had to step on the button to turn it on? i think this one might be user error though. - there seems to be a lot of alexa compatible devices, but i m having a hard time finding a daylight bulb for my closet, as well as smaller bulbs for some of our lights/fans and lamps. . Random things. - while playing cod with my sister on speaker phone she can tell my alexa to play - songs, we have alexa song wars. - alexa randomly turns on my phone s blue tooth, for no reason. - alexa will randomly tell us we must join a group first. . Complaints. - i really liked the cases/covers for the echo and the echo dots, but you can t have one on the plus. This is lame. - the speakers aren t that great, especially the dots, i have a bluetooth mini speaker that has more juice than they do. - the white dots come with a black plug this sucks because i wanted all white in my library and kitchen and the black plug is bulky and noticeable. - i understand the technology isn t there yet, but it sucks that you only have three options alexa, echo or computer, we wanted to name ours alfred.

I had the first gen when the echo first came out. Back when it was for prime members only. I can't really tell the sound difference on this one. Sounds pretty much the same for me. But i use it more for it's smart features over playing music. That is what i have my sound system for. I do love the new white color. It's very clean and polished looking. The first unit i had wouldn't connect to wifi and after some back and forth with the app and reset i hit up returns. They sent me a new unit asap and that one connected just fine and works like a dream. I purchased some hue color bulbs and it works great for them.

W. Courtney, Darlington says

If you already owned an echo, then the only reason to get this one is for the smart hub (actually, i also wanted to move my original to another location - so i guess that is a good reason too). That said, the unit is sharp in appearance and the smart hub found all of my enabled lights, switches, etc. You don't get all of the functionality that the makers app would offer, but it's pretty good for the basics - which is what i mainly want. Alexa control seemed fine, and i had no issues turning things on and off, etc. It is not the best hub, and i'm sure it will improve - hoping it won't need another new echo. . My other problem is that the new echo does not seem to pick up my voice as well as the original echo. I have to speak more loudly, which is annoying. If anyone knows how to make it better, please post something.

Disadvantage and Critical reviews

Z. Alice, Haute-Normandie says

Update: online store has added color support for hue devices. However, it is still not a hue hub. This means that you're still missing a lot of functionality, and cannot use things like "ifttt" to control color's and such like you would with a hue hub. . The with built in smart home hub needs a massive astrix. It is not a fully functional hue hub, and additionally you can t setup robots and activities the same way you can with most real smarthome hubs. This just basically gives you an echo that can do some functions that hubs can do. . A huge one for me, is there is no way to change colors of hue lights except by voice commands, and the color spectrum is very limited! when it ships with a hue bulb you kind of think that it will have fully functioning hue capabilities. That is not the case! . . All and all, i already owned a wink hub, hue hub, and a gen 1 echo. I bought this to consolidate, but i m literally zero further. . Finally, we all feel like this newest version doesn t understand us as well as the older one did. . If you own an echo already, just pass on all these new ones! if you want a smart home hub just buy one and save the money!

. Hakala, New Jersey

Worked fine with my previous echo dot network. Added hue bulb and alexa found it right away. Even added to my groups with minimal effort. The echo plus just won't "drop in" on my dot no matter how much i have tried. (i think drop in is a nice feature but too rudimentary to function. ) sound quality from speaker is not so great, less than original echo. I currently have a smart network of wemo switch, tp-link bulbs and hue bulb and they all work fine with the echo plus and no reprogramming required. Have to give three stars since it a) won't connect to dot and b) not much improvement over echo at the price point. I was hoping the hub would replace need for separate smartthings hub, philips hub and other hubs. Seems to be a minimal attempt at a universal hub.

Y. Arnett, Bremen says

There are a couple of issues i had with the echo plus. Unfortunately they are not small issues but rather large issues that may be deal breakers for some of you so i thought i would share to save you time and money. . The first one is that if you have several echos in one household and would like to link them together to stream music all over the house as advertised they must all be on the same online store account! so if you have roomates you either cannot link them or if you do then all items purchased on the echo will come from one persons account thus credit card. Not well thought out in my opinion. . The second one is an even bigger disappointment. Online store will not play nice with your apple or android accounts so the only way to stream music is either one of the approved music services like online store or pandora or connect to the echo as a bluetooth speaker. If you have your entire library on apple or android like i do, you are out of luck.

K. Bertie, North Carolina

Misleading, simply because it does not have full "hub" functionalities. I am returning mine. I actually thought this was going to replace my st hub, how disappointing, plus the sound is not much better than the original.

. Finch, Trafford says

Setup was easy. . Phillips hue skill is not able to replace your hue bridge. Not by a long shot. Doesn't allow hue routines, schedules or themes. Just very binary: lights on/lights off and setting basic colors. . Audio quality is not as good as i had hoped. Don't expect b&o or bose style sound. . Multi-room audio playback is very buggy with pandora. With spotify it doesn't work at all. It basically only works reliably with online store music which has a much smaller library than spotify.

M. Jackson, West Virginia

Great idea and with a little bit of doing you can make this work for all sorts of things. However if you were thinking; that you, your wife, and your kids would all be able to unlock the door, or turn lights on/off from the app on their phones; that's not a feature unless all phones are logged into the same account the "smart devices" were added through. Doing this will eliminate some of the other awesome features such as, messages, drop in, and contact calling. Online store has a household setup, but this does not share the smart home devices connected to the echo plus hub. . Disappointing to say the least.

. Joanna, Somerset says

Very big disappoint. I have he original, and numerous dots and was looking forward to this new upgrade. In anticipation of this my son had even joked that online store might be edging out apple as far as tech primacy in our house. The verdict is - nope. . First - voice recognition not nearly as good. Second - sound quality not just worse that first gen- but objectively crappy. Third - doesnt communicate with smart home objects well. . Save you pennies, buy first gen.

E. Jacqueline, Dudley

We just bought a home and have been working on automating as much as possible. I preordered this pack as soon as it was announced, excited that we could use the echo plus as a home hub as well! . . The device looks and feels almost exactly like the original echo. The only cosmetic difference is the power plug - it's now on the side of the device instead of hidden underneath. I'm pretty ambivalent about the difference, but you may prefer one or the other. . I was really disappointed to find that the echo plus only supports zigbee devices - no z-wave. These competing protocols are included together in most other hubs on the market, so i assumed (whoops! ) that online store would follow suit. While this may mean that zigbee will get a nice boost from alexa users, i don't want to be restricted to a particular format in the interim. . I hoped that even without the "home hub" functionality for my current z-wave devices, this would still be a nice upgrade. Disappointed again. I don't notice any difference between this and my current echo device - audio quality sounds the same to me, the volume range is comparable, and the voice recognition is no more or less reliable. Maybe a real audiophile would notice a difference, but for our use it's functionally the same. . Currently, the new echo is $99 and a smartthings hub is $50. Together these give me even greater functionality & flexibility than the echo plus for the same price - albeit, without the free bulb. If you have only zigbee products, are just starting out and want absolute simplicity, or just really need that free bulb, the echo plus might be a good pick for you. I suspect that most echo fans who already have some automation & wireless control implemented will do much better with other devices for now.

C. Juliana, Suffolk says

I have the echo gen1 but was looking forward to echo plus w/built in hub. My hue bulbs will not be picked up by the device, and i read in the reviews that bulbs used previously can not be used with a new device without some kind of tedious work, that i really don t quite understand. I was so pleased with the first echo, i purchased a dot for another room, pleased with that also. This echo plus? not so much, at all. Matter of fact, i said i would return it, and granddaughter said she wanted it. Told her she would. Be better off with a gen1 echo, but she says she wants this. (of course she gets it for free). Long story short, i am not buying new bulbs for this, and i am having trouble trying to figure the. To refigure it, to make it work. I am going back to using the philips hub, and be happy to have it. Until they can get this figured out how to work easier, i suggest you save your money. Definitely not worth the headache.

. Courtney, Coventry

The only reason to buy this type of echo is to replace the philips hub, but it can't do that. It just doesn't have the same functionality. At most, it can turn lights on and off, and change their brightness. If you want to adjust color, you sort of can, but only verbally. Not only does this mean you can't program it to change colors, it also means you can't get the exact color you want, just general ones like "red" and "blue". . When it comes to the echo plus and the philips hue hub, it's entirely either/or. You have to unregister devices from the hub and register them with the echo. For me, the discovery scan didn't work at all, so i had to manually enter the serial numbers from each bulb. Of course, you can't register the echo plus as a hue hub so that the philips software works with it. That would be too convenient. . I'm hoping that, a year from now, the echo software will catch up and i'll switch my bulbs over to it. For now, i have to switch all of them back to the philips hub, which means i don't get full integration with alexa. . Online store overpromised and underdelivered. It would be smarter not to buy this until things change, if they do.

G. Carmen, Kentucky says

Not as good as the original. Haven t noticed a real difference outside of it actually sounding worse. They say the sounds improved but i don t hear that at all. The microphones are a lot more sensitive which is a plus. Don t waste your money on this model opt for the older one. I m actually disappointed in online store. I literally own very online store device they sell and this one is the first one i regret buying. I honestly feel ripped off. I ended up selling my original model for a more expensive model that sounds worse.

W. Debra, Southampton

Disappointed, doesn't seem to understand as well as the original. The sound is better, with more bass but overall some issues . Was not the upgrade i was expecting.

I rarely write reviews, but i felt i needed to on this product. I have 3 of these devices. Echo dot, the new echo plus, and the new echo. Echo dot in the kitchen, the new echo in the master bath, and the echo plus in the master bedroom. I am constantly having to unplug and reset the echo plus, because it will not accept the same commands that my echo 20 feet away will accept. They are on 2 opposite sides of the room. I will direct my voice towards the echo plus, and the ring will start spinning. And all of sudden i hear alexa from the bathroom. There are times i am sitting right next to the plus and ask it to do something. It will not respond. I walk towards the bathroom, and ask the echo the same command and it will do it everytime. My dot and the new echo, have been plugged in since the day i got them! gonna send the echo+ back and order another new echo!

F. Hadley, Sefton says

This is okay for an echo with a good speaker, but the home automation, which i bought it for, doesn't work very well. I thought it might replace my automation hub. It really didn't. Hopefully more protocols will be available in the future, but 'zigbee' is at best a misleading description. Disappointed!

U. Kimberly, Westminster

Spoke with customer service before even ordering this to ensure it would work with my existing smart home items, as i was looking to replace the wink2 with one hub that would work with all my devices (wink 2 doesn't work with the honeywell lyric thermostat). Online store customer support assured me that it would work, but they obviously knew nothing about the technical specs. It arrived and, sure enough, doesn't work with my z-wave locks. Upon more digging, it only supports zigbee protocol devices. Technical service reps should've known this as this device was announced. Really disappointed that i was lied to, and also that a device from online store only supports one protocol? not useful and far too expensive to keep when it doesn't do what i purchased it for. It's going back.

Was looking forward to finally trying aecho device, received the echo plus with built in hub and bulb, imagine my surprise when it could not even discover the bulb included. Was told by customer support that it was either a defective echo plus or bulb so got a new set with the same problem. After spending three nights trying to fix this customer support finally told me there was a problem and they were working on a fix. I question the person on whether it was a software or hardware issue and if i could talk to some one more knowledgeable so she put me on hold for about 5 minutes then hung up.

R. Mathis, Florida

Like many others mentioned below, the sound quality is unexpectedly bad. For this same amount of money, i can buy a much better bluetooth speaker and pair it with an echo dot. I really wanted to like this echo product but i will be returning it soon.

I am so disappointed with the quality of online store s alexa and echo products. I have encountered so many broken features and bugs that make it nearly impossible to use the device in the way that online store advertises. . The latest is a massive bug in the smart home feature, where suddenly every device in my home has been virtually cloned hundreds of times in the app, making it impossible to add new devices or remove old ones. This on the launch day of their brand new echo plus which is entirely oriented around smart home is shameful, online store. . I m disappointed because it seems that online store has strayed from its mission of delighting the customer and is instead is biasing towards pushing buggy crap out the door as fast as possible.

I've been expanding my smart home capabilities this year. I already had purchased 3 echo dots, a hue bridge with a bunch of phillips hue bulbs and an ecobee thermostat. I purchased this echo plus for our den. The primary reason for this instead of another dot was the built-in zigbee hub which could control hue bulbs. There was a corner of one bedroom where the existing hue hub couldn't reach because the radio signal was blocked by metal pipes in an adjacent bathroom. The lamp is now reachable from the new echo plus. . I am quite disappointed and wish i had read the reviews before i purchased this. The smart home control of hue bulbs though echo plus is extremely basic and nowhere close to the capabilities i get with the hue app and hub. You would be better off purchasing a wink 2 hub and the plain echo. I couldn't add another hue hub because hue hubs must be physically connected to your router and i have only one router. . The sound is better than the echo dot which was a secondary reason to get this. If you want the best sound, connect your echo to good speakers through bluetooth.

V. Betty, Redbridge says

I hated needing a separate hue hub to add to the rats nest behind my tv. On its face, the echo plus looked like the solution to all my problems. I fell for the marketing. I fell so hard that i didn't even read reviews before buying. I wish i had. It turns out echo plus is a smart hub by only the loosest of definitions. It connected to the bulb that came with it easily, but it took an extra bit of wrangling to figure out how to connect the bulbs i already owned. Now running the lights through the echo hub causes the dimming to be abrupt and harsh, where before it was a smooth gradual increase or decrease. And i hope you don't have a color hue bulb in your system, because this hub can't manage that. . And now i find that the alexa app can't delete old devices. It can only "deactivate" them (kind of like archiving them i guess). This means that when i migrated my hue bulbs off their hub and on to the echo, the old hue connections for the same bulbs are forever visible on my list of devices. That's not only irritating from a "type a" perspective, but also just confusing. So you would think that a "deactivated" device would stop showing up as an option when you are setting up routines, right? wrong. There it is! you just have to remember that it's "deactivated" so you don't include it in your routine. So. What exactly does "deactivating" do? your guess is as good as mine. . The echo plus only supports zigbee devices, inexplicably alienating half the market. Every other smart hub worth its salt supports z-wave as well. I can only assume this choice is an attempt to "apple" us towards one standard. Please online store, that's arguably one of apple's most annoying habits. Don't do that. . I'd love to set my ceiling fan up so that at bed time the fan turns on and the light turns off. But i have a sneaking suspicion that might be beyond the echo's capabilities. Right now, this hub is basically a glorified light switch. So not only is it a kind of dumb hub, but i feel kind of dumb for gulping down online store's kool-aid without a second glance. The most frustrating thing about the echo plus is that it could really fix a genuine problem with the smart home market, hub creep, by centralizing control in one device with excellent voice recognition. That would be amazing! we all want that! so why did you give us this instead?

D. Lindsey, British Columbia

As an original echo owner, the plus is a disappointment. I sent it back. I upgraded for the hub and the idea that the sound would be better but that wasn t the case. First off, the hub is very limited and they have kept that on the down low in my opinion. It can only connect to zigbee but not z-wave which a lot or smart devices use. The sound was much more treble which i like the bass the original has so they lost me there. This is why i sent the echo plus back and i am much happier with my original echo.

J. Shawna, Redcar and Cleveland says

If you have the first gen and didn't like the sound quality . Don't bother upgrading . If you don't have the first gen echo . Get a dot and a bose . I placed my gen 1 echo and echo plus side by side . And the sound quality is pretty much identical . Perhaps the treble has been improved slightly . This is certainly no bose ! one irritating thing that must be software related is : with the " end of request " sound turned on , the ding that happens after you stop talking and before alexa starts responding is way off . The " ding " sound actually comes during alexa's first word . At the same time she's speaking . At times this makes what she first says difficult to understand . Online store technical support has no idea for a fix . Just the usual - unplug it and plug it back in . Doesn't work . Frankly , there are times that online store customer service suffers a communication / language barrier as well . Hopefully a future software update will fix this as well as up the bass and sound quality . Until then , save your $

For example, i have an online store music unlimited family subscription at $14. 99 a month. Can i add a playlist from my music unlimited account to my echo -nope? online store charges an additional $3. 99 per device to use the online store unlimited service on the echo. So if i want to listen to online store unlimited at work, and at home and the three echo devices i purchase as christmas presents i have to pay 29. 96 a month. No thank you. I will wait until apple releases the homepod. For 14. 99 a month i can stream apple music to an unlimited number airplay or homepod devices. . Update: online store canceled its upload services so there is no way to add music purchased on cds, or podcast, not available on online store unlimited, or online store prime. I can live without the ability to upload music, but the limited selection of kid-friendly podcast and no way to add a podcast from other source is frustrating.

This is the first alexa connected device that i am disappointed with. I bought it for the hub function. I thought i could get rid of the other hubs. Unfortunately, that is not the case. The routines are routine. There is no sunrise or sunset setting and some devices that are listed just don't work. You would think online store could create some tutorials on how the hub feature might be used. Moreover, a routines link is included on the iphone app, but missing from the windows 10 controls. How could the overlook this?

L. Patton, Nordrhein-Westfalen

I was extremely disappointed after trying this unit. I have echos in every room and couldn t help getting one of these new devices. I had two problems; first, i have a ge smart outlet and could not connect it, second, and much more important, i had heard that the sound would be better than the original echo. This could not be further from the truth. The sound was far worse than the echo and the echo show, it was closer to a dot only louder. Perhaps i received a defective unit. I returned it for a refund. I returned the bulb too but did not try it.

H. Guest, Indiana says

I purchased this mainly as a possible replacement for my wink hub, but the built in echo plus hub is extremely limited and no z wave support. All of my current door / window sensors and alarms are z wave. I'm debating on returning this and exchanging for the new echo without the built in hub. If there were plans to include z wave support in the future, perhaps with a firmware update, and updates to the software that would allow routines and schedules, i would keep it. But at this point i have been unable to find any information regarding future plans for support.

Echo plus is supposed to contain a hub. You market it is an option to buying a separate hub. So i click on the link in the echo plus page to take me to devices with an easy connect to echo's new hub. I navigated over to locks and purchased the schlage connect. Turns out the lock does not work with the alexa hub, it still requires a stand alone hub! wtf. . I was initially going to buy a hub, but figured i'd spend the extra $50 and get an updated echo. I already own 3 echos's and 3 echo dots. I didn't need another echo if it doesn't actually take the place of a hub. . Totally dissatisfied.
